When I was overtrained as a college freshman (and yes, I also developed pneumonia), it took me 6 months of complete rest to recuperate. This is not something you get over in just a few days, or even a few weeks.

Also, please take note of this part of the article in particular. The condition, as I have noted before, is heriditary. It is not something Salazar made up so that Goucher & Rupp could get on PEDs.

I believe he has excercise induced asthma and uses an inhaler, so would this be the other "medical condition" you allude to?

Drop off could be for a variety of reasons, but it seems from the article that two bad races and they run down to get a diagnosis in Houston, when perhaps resting him might have been a better idea - determine if the problem is overtraining. As has been talked about in other posts his symptoms seemed to indicate overtraining, but he goes down to Houston to see a doctor about the problem. Portland has Oregon Health Sciences University which I would expect to have some experts who could provide a diagnosis. Drive 100 miles north on I-5 or jump on a plane to Texas. Seems like you are looking for a doctor who will tell you what you want to hear.

It seems appropriate that Rupp's training regieme from Berto would put Rupp into a similar place as Burto was. Pushing the limits of what one's body can do can leave the body unable to respond so the body breaksdown as a result. Rupp will be back, but as will his mentor hurting from the experience. And if Rupp has the problems with getting the meds right, as have many others, he might never climb to the heights he was once headed for.

Needs an inhaler for asthma and EPO boosting thyroid meds - all legal mind you - and his coach is AlSal. Nope, nothing going on here, move along.

I have an underactive thyroid. I've been taking medication for it (synthroid) for almost 12 years. I have never failed a USADA drug test. If thyroid stimulating medication produced EPO then it would be illegal and I would have tested positive for using a banned substance. Apparently, USADA hasn't read your "evidence."

Dude, nobody cares about your underactive thyroid! Just because you have an underactive thyroid and went to a doctor does not make you an expert on the subject. You are a guy who has a condition, and takes his medication, end of subject.

I have spent tons of time researching the effects of an underactive thyroid on running performance(seeing as how I continued to compete after being diagnosed). I know much more about the dynamics of hypothyroidism than the average person who takes their meds and doesn't ask any questions. It doesn't make me an expert, but it does make someone knowledgeable about the subject. Which is more than can be said for many people posting on this thread.

I know it all could be a strange coincidence...but I'm thinking that there has to be SOME sort of correlation between goucher, rupp, AND kennedy all being diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Perhaps the connection is just that they all have a hereditary predisposition and it was triggered with intense training/overtraining. I think people have a valid reason to be asking questions...but for f***'s sake show some tact. I guess keeping the attacks to a minimum would violate the 1st rule of letsrun forum dynamics.

Wow, so you found out that Thyroid Hormone causes the body to increase its natural EPO production and think you stumbled on some big secret that proves thyroid hormone could be a PED. "FAST HEART RATE .... MUSCLE WEAKNESS....FATIGUE......TROUBLE SLEEPING.....IRREGULAR HEART RATE..." Yeah, this is totally what a distance runner would want. It CERTAINLY would be worth a slight increase in EPO production.........sure it would.

My resting heart rate went from 50's to 100 because of my increased levels of thyroid hormone. Oh yes, I was so lucky indeed to have those increased levels.

USADA wouldn't hit you for a positive EPO test because you would not have any synthetic EPO in you, just the elevated levels of natural EPO from the synthroid. There is no way to test for high natural EPO levels.

(That's all assuming synthroid does cause the body to produce EPO to a point of benefit, which I am quite undecided on.)

I didn't say they would have hit me with a positive EPO test. I'm saying that if the thryoid hormone that people take for hypothyroidism was know to be a performace enhancer (i.e. it boosts your EPO artificially), then USASA would make the thyroid hormone a banned substance, which it obviously has never done.

You are assuming that synthroid is the drug which is being administered, perhaps this is not the case.

In the case of case of Rupp, you have an athlete who uses an altitude tent (slated for possible banning by WADA), a diagnosis of asthma for which an inhaler is prescribed and now diagnosis of hypothyroidism for which some type of drug treament is administered - if administered correctly has been proven to boost EPO levels. Adding to this situation, you have the coach who has been dogged by drug allegations throughout his career as an athlete and coach. This is clearly a pattern.

Californian, obviously assumes that the drug that he is taking is the same drug and regimen that is being administered to Rupp and Goucher. Hypothyroidism can be diagnosed by a routine blood test at any doctor's office, with no need to fly to Houston to see a doctor. At worst, a blood test would be done locally and the results would then be sent to a specialist.

There is something fishy in Oregon.
