It seems that ncaa loses either doesn’t fully understand what is happening and how the money flows or is a kid from Iowa clinging to some wishful thinking.
exactly, ncaa loses, what was your point about ND state opting out? It wasn't clear to me. They certainly do not represent Mid-major to me... they represent FCS
It is an example. Do you have some examples of midmajors who opted in?
So the reason they opted out is lack of money? They have a robust all around athletics department with the top football program in the country. How are other schools going to opt in then?

everyone in the big west... everyone in the MWC... most all mid-majors will opt-in
We need local (geographical, regional, corporate) clubs not tied to schools like they have seem to have much more of in the UK and Australia. Basically competitive rec leagues with facilities and standings and seasons, like there is sort of with adult softball and other sports. More local track nights in communities. I think it's possible. People want to get out and get back to traditional entertainment and touch grass and breathe fresh air. In America, we view sports too much through the lens of school and youth. Let school be about schooling (i.e., education), and separate out sports.

This exists, even if it's not well known.
I agree with Clubbin and I would say a lot of this exists, just like Tonin. You have to search it out - it doesn't batter you over the head the way that the NBA and NFL and CFB do. But people do like to do things!

I am a senior at a D1 mid major and a member of my school's athlete-faculty association, and while a decision has not been made, our AD has told us that we will be opting in or out as a conference. And yes, as a previous poster mentioned, basketball is the primary revenue sport for most of our member schools, and is a driving factor.
Further, in talking with our distance coach, we have been recruiting freshman with a clear and mutual understanding that they will likely be XC only. Most of the recruits think that they will be "the guy" that has a break out season and makes the track roster. We anticipate having about 7 out of 14 distance men run all three seasons. We are also talking to some transfers from P4's that would have an immediate impact as top 3 guys on our men's XC roster and bring track scoring potential.
A substantial portion of the NCAA's DI distance runners are about to get a pink slip come March. Some estimates put it at about a third of the sport's women (many more were allowed around as Title IX fodder therefore there are more to cut) and about a quarter of the men. Those who are in this situation...what are you going to do? Transfer to the next best opportunity? Remain at your current institution and just not compete in the NCAA anymore? Keep the head in the sand hoping you pop something outdoor to save yourself? What a time to be alive...
In my home state, the T&F and XC meets at the high school level are gigantic. Over 1,000 kids at some meets. Do 99% of these kids suddenly lose their interesting in running when going to college? Surely a good number of them want to continue competing if given the opportunity (plus no parents at the meet to yell at them).
From the university's perspective, what is downside in sponsoring a club? Financially its a drop in the bucket. But what a great marketing tool to use to attract a higher caliber student (because we all know how smart runners are...)
The idea of a football player or wrestler trying out D1 XC/track is just as funny.
Actually in Orange County, all the 100m or 200m sprinters are refugees from Football. This is how the Football players stay in shape. It's actually quite exciting to see refrigerators sprinting down the 100m and clocking 10.8 secs.
One thing to consider about clubs. This may depend on how your institution insures student activities. I'm addition to this, who paid for the facilities for this club team to practice?
Having essentially run the club team while I was in college, I can tell you we got absolutely nothing in support. We were basically a friends running group that tried to get time in the facilities just like about other student, which means using the right room with everybody what as well as trying to get in evening workouts on the indoor track while dodging couples running around with their pinkies linked.... :)
I’m the elite field coordinator for a decent sized regional marathon with good prize money… I have a meeting tomorrow about launching a “post collegiate development” program allocating 20-30 of our 100 spots for the elite field with current college/recent college grads who could gain access to the field with 5k/10k times. Sucks a lot of kids are about to lose their spot on a team, but I’d be more than happy to take a bunch of 8:20+/14:20+ and 10:00+/17:00 3k/5k women looking to run their first half/full!

The NCAA will be fine. What a bunch of twha wha’s people are - for not being in theTOP 17 of a team…. Not a race- a Team.
