Kristen Sinema and Joe Manchin. Ever heard of 'em?
Ah Jeez.
Gonna blame the parlimentarian too?
Dems always have an excuse as to why they can't help us.
They sure can rush hundreds of billions to Urkaine, Israel, and the weapons makers though
Of course the hundreds of billions for the wars and shutdowns are only possible because both the republicans and democrats are clients of the central bank and its crony satellite banks... The solution to all of that is to end the fed and make politicians accountable in real time for the pain their bad policies cause. Would some decent folks get caught up in the financial fallout? Sure. But that would be good incentive not to trust bankers and banking regulators, and politicians with the fruits of your labor. Any financial system that relies on the continuous erosion of value to drive economic activity (both for better and worse,) is fundamentally corrupt.
Money ought to be a tool used by people to reign in the government, not a tool used by government to control people.
Social security and medicare are easy programs to fix. Increase the payroll deduction and raise the cap on income for the payroll deduction and the program will be solvent for decades into the future.
Chipping away at benefits will be a disaster as more and more people are not saving enough (or at all) for retirement because of the high cost of housing, education and healthcare. If anything, social security should be expanded to provide benefits that actually cover housing, food and other necessities in retirement. Lifting the cap on the payroll deduction would help raise benefits.
I have to admit I drafted something very similar and gave up
I do not see this as so unfixable, really
raise the cap on contribution income levels
possibly move the early take to 63-64
full up to 68 that will be 1 year 2 months more than new eligible I believe
SS is nice but we knew better than to have to rely on it.
pity those who need it to get by.
Such a typical and awful post from you. You're an old fart and have happily been collecting SS for years no doubt. Your medical care is also likely covered by Medicare, so kudos for you and yours while you happily pull the ladder up behind you.
Typical cruel, ugly right wing attitude. I hope you too suffer in coming years.
This is why we actually have to teach history and government in schools. SS was designed to tax people who were working while paying out people who were not. SS payments are not “your” money like a 401k. Your benefit is not really proportional to what you pay in, so it is redistributive - e.g. there is a cap even if you keep paying in.
A proper teaching of history would include the fact that there were 40 workers per Social Security recipient in 1940, but only 3 workers per retiree today, soon to be 2.
The Social Security "trust fund" has been spent.
It is impossible to raise taxes enough to cover the coming outlays. So massive benefit cuts and/or a significant raising of the eligibility age must happen.
All true and great points.
But the sad part is the BILLIONS that they waste on unnecessary projects, other countries, etc...that could go a long was towards helping those who worked all of their lives. I'm 28 and hoping it'll still be there when I hang'em up...but it's not looking good.
The flip side is it has to happen as like unemployment money, being spent by recipients of those benefits, that money too is spent on things that keep the economy going and removing it or lowering it too much would absolutely have a negative outcome on many things.

Wow, what an uncalled and vicious take on what the poster wrote. Lighten up Francis, he earned it and paid into it. You were probably on unemployment during Covid, eh?

Why try and talk about things you know zero about?
I planned my retirement years and years before that retirement day. As did the wife. Between the two of us we made good $$$$$, Enought to be able to hoard some, now add why I got into the insurance biz, After five years in the biz you become vestedl That means from here on out you get a % of all renewed biz. I wrote a lot of business in my 33 years.
The SS is a small supplement just as I planned it to be,
Haven't read all 5 pages, but has it been mentioned the FAIRNESS act passed the House by a large margin last week? If it passes the Senate before 12/31, public workers in other pensions systems would eligible for the full social security benefits they paid into when they worked jobs other than their pension jobs. The Windfall Elimination Provision is being repealed and by some Congressmen termed unconstitutional, which was signed in during the Reagan Administration. Policeman, fireman, teachers or any other public workers that paid into PERS or watever retirement pension they are in. So if a fireman put in enough quarters doing something else and is eligible for $1200/mo...they will receive that and not $300/mo. or whatever ridiculous amount they received.

Dude now don't you feel silly?
You wouldn't have built up so much pension wealth for yourself if you had to financially support your parents in their retirement.
It should be abolished! Lazy old people wanting something for nothing. They should grab their walkers and go get all the jobs that will be available once we deport 20 percent of the population! Meanwhile, we should still keep charging them the SS tax to make sure that CEO's are fairly compensated, and for the privilege of being able to work for American corporations who deserve every penny of profit they earn!
And those good for nothing middle aged people who REFUSE to look after their parents! They should be giving up work at 50 and if they haven't made enough money by then that's their problem!
Raise the cap on earnings subject to Soc Sec tax to unlimited
Simpler is making the tax based on Total Income with no deductions for anything, except don't tax Social Security benefits at all.
This means all investment incomes (nothing non-taxable, including Roths), all business incomes, all "deferred" salaries in the year "awarded", Capital Gains, and similar. The uber rich, like Musk and Trump are not paying into SS at all, or paying less than minimum wage earners.
I think that is what he is proposing, since he said earnings and not net income.

Satire needs some indication.
Not satire?? Oops.😬
My intent was satirical, but perhaps it says a lot about the state of our country that there's some question about it
