A real education encourages students to think for themselves and NOT follow a go along to get along mentality. Ivy League sheep, please stay away from me.
you couldn't have been within a mile of an ivy if you think that's the general education environment there. you have them confused with, i dunno, reed or oberlin or something.
in my wealthy suburb in nj , people have been putting yard signs out for graduating seniors with flag for the school they are going to.
past 1-3 years (since covid really), I have seen a TON of southern schools. auburn, clemson, ole miss, FSU, UGA, Alabama etc. Never saw them before.
sure kids try for the ivy leagues first, but in the past if they didnt get in it was rutgers, penn state, villanova, northeastern, BU etc. now they all seem to be heading south.
I'm not picking on Clemson. It's an example of a good school that everyone would agree is firmly a tier (or more) below HYP/S/M, that's all (and it was mentioned earlier in the thread).
People are crowing that elite colleges are now awful and not worth it on this thread – most of it for dumb political reasons. That's obviously wrong. Are the atmospheres not what some kids want? Sure, it all depends on your priorities.
American universities – across the 'tiers' we love to discuss – are some of the most productive institutions on in history. The political attacks against university education are not good so I will reflexively go after what I think are dumb political arguments (as you are well aware).
The most important question is do the companies you want to work for after college hire for the entry level role you want from the university you are going to. If you want to be an investment banker, then you are best off going to a school where the Goldman Sachs recruits from. If you want to be a computer programmer, you should go to schools where the Microsofts hire out of. It's not that hard once you know the "trick". Once you've spent five years in your career it won't matter where you went but elite schools (measured by where elite employers hire from). I know if you want to work as an engineer working on space craft you will have a better chance with an undergraduate degree from GaTech or Florida than Harvard, Yale, or Princeton. But if you want to be an investment banker (or work in space policy), you better be at Harvard.
Sometimes those lower tier schools teach more practical things. I know Tennessee Tech, a school on nobody's radar, is considered by employers in the Tennessee Valley (Tennessee, Kentucky, Northern Ga, Northern Alabama) to be the second best engineering school behind Georgia Tech. If your goal is to marry your high school or college sweet heart, move to back to your hometown and make a decent middle class wage, elite colleges are not where it is at. I don't think it because of political reasons as much as it's a defense mechanism in terms of not being good enough (I have that tendency as well as I too wasn't good enough to attend the elite universities).
As a parent of two college age students, The reality is that southern schools are super trendy, right now.
four years ago, West Coast schools were super trendy. It turns out being popular means that for an out-of-state student admission rates became super low. Students were forced to look at schools that they had an easier time getting into.
Trying to blame this on Covid is absolutely stupidest thing. Covid (restrictions/ lockdowns) haven’t existed on campuses in a meaningful way in three years..
additionally. Southern schools aren’t really cheaper. and with the popularity of out of state students, They don’t need to offer that much aid.
finally, an overstatement of the attractiveness of southern women. Every decent looking blonde girl there is a girl with a pig nose on her way to being 300 pounds.
why not? Lots of dumb people out there who will believe whatever you tell them. And if you target conservatives, there are plenty of sheeple who will believe whatever you tell them. See the stupid stuff that Fox News puts out…

Yeah it's a fascinating phenomenon. I think it got a big push by the appeal of all these sorority dance videos, the sorority rush videos and the negativity of the palestine protests and politics in general.
If you just want to have fun in college, big state U in the South sounds pretty good. I get it.
It's a step away from the enforced wokeism of the Northeast. And that appeals to a lot of kids.

America where dumb and loud is more popular than smart and good.
I will say many of my daughter friends who went to these "fun" schools w/o restrictions are finding themselves rationing water because southern cities didn't want to invest in infrastructure and were decimated by the hurricane. And when those sorority girls get knocked up because "politics" don't allow birth control or abortion it will be a blast.
also Ivy are about education and connections. No “hidden Ivy” has those
Yeah, I agree with the grade inflation, already mentioned it. That’s why test scores do matter and > 1550 on the SAT is pretty dang good and should be rewarded accordingly versus a “test optional” straight A student. There’s no brag here, just an effort to rein in Harambe’s humongous ego.
Lots of hidden Ivies have connections. You don’t think Duke or Vanderbilt or Rice or Wake Forest or Emory or Tulane have connections? Moreover, employers hire more locally now. Nobody in Texas, for example, cares about a Dartmouth kid or a UCLA kid when they can get phenomenal applicants from Rice, UT Austin, SMU, & Trinity, to name a few, all with their own connections. Nobody wants to fly you in anymore, roll out the red carpet treatment, and expend the time and resources when they can just hire great local kids. So, kids should think about that when choosing college unless they are planning to go elsewhere for grad school.
What are you even talking about? People today are competing for jobs with others from around the country.
In fact, it’s easier than ever has been to apply for jobs that are outside your area because companies will do zoom interviews, online applications. Etc.
There is always been school networks. I always tell my kids that if you happen to go to the same school as the person hiring you that’s a plus. That’s not what I’m talking about. The investor class isn’t giving millions of dollars to start ups from SMU or Tulane.

1) Girls are already "knocked up" when they get an abortion.
2) According to the NCBI article linked below, a slight majority of women procuring direct abortion in the US were using a birth control drug or device in the month when they got pregnant with the child they aborted.
The objective was to determine whether types of contraceptive methods used by abortion patients in the month they became pregnant changed between 2000 and 2014.We used secondary data from the 2000 (n=10,015) and 2014 (8177) A...
3) Elsewhere I read that a very high percentage (80-90%) of women procuring direct abortion were experienced users of birth control drugs or devices, but many abandoned these due to their harmful effects (depression, increased irritability, weight gain, decreased libido).

Southern schools could become sausagefests with the backwards social views of these states.

you dont get it. women WANT to go there to be part of the ATTRACTIVE and FEMININE sororities so they can get validation from others. gen z worships image and beauty.
a bunch of women refusing to wear makeup to fight the patriarchy whining about israeli occupation is NOT ATTRACTIVE to many gen z women.

You seem more snide than clear.
I live in Manhattan in the city of my birth, NYC. There are areas in NYC where an unborn baby is about as likely or even more likely to be killed via direct abortion than to be born. And I've seen two women here bearing the scars of having their presumably healthy breasts cut off so they can be more like a man. One sometimes uses the men's locker room at my gym. Folks here can use locker rooms and bathrooms consistent with the gender they identify with rather than the sex they allege was "assigned at birth." I'm fairly confident that most southern schools do not have social views more backwards than here.

I’m being extremely snide. Your backwards social views harm women and children. Control is more important than health and safety to people like yourself.

Rather, it seems that you advocate controlling unborn or partially born children to death.

Although I think Vanderbilt University Medical Center is a big name, unfortunately, in so-called "transgender medicine."
Just brutal for the northeast. Turns out kids prefer a fun community atmosphere, not activism and drama. No doubt the prettier girls make a difference too(southern belles that look like women vs blue haired activists at columbia)
A growing number of high-school seniors in the North are making an unexpected choice for college: They are heading to Clemson, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Alabama and other universities in the South.
Students say they are searching for the fun and school spirit emanating from the South on their social-media feeds. Their parents cite lower tuition and less debt, and warmer weather. College counselors also say many teens are eager to trade the political polarization ripping apart campuses in New England and New York for the sense of community epitomized by the South’s football Saturdays. Promising job prospects after graduation can sweeten the pot.
The number of Northerners going to Southern public schools went up 84% over the past two decades, and jumped 30% from 2018 to 2022, a Wall Street Journal analysis of the latest available Education Department data found.
Imagine bragging about being "safety schools". SMDH. These are students who couldn't get into Northeast schools. Southern schools are their safety schools because of lower academic standards. Red states backwater have lower academic standards, lower standards of living, lower salaries, lower IQ, just to name a few.
