He ran 4:02 in that race but the British officials didn’t let it stand as the record. Honestly it’s for the best. I think the same for pace lights. A nice novelty but unsporting . Pacers jogging to get lapped is especially absurd, I can only imagine how out of hand that could get in a 10k
In the 2000s at a small D3 meet in upstate NY there was a deliberate attempt at this "lag lap pacing". There were only 5-7 racers in the field and one was distinctly better than the rest, so his brother entered and paced through ~2k which was a hard effort for the pacer, then moved out to lane 2 and slowed dramatically for ~ 3 mins. In that 3 mins the pacer ran ~650 or 700 M while the racer ran 900-1000m and then the pacer ramped back up and dropped back into lane 1 in front of his brother. He lasted almost another 1.5k before moving out again. The pacer never interfered with any other racer and finished the race. There was some entertaining discourse about whether it was legal. I think everyone knew it wasn't completely above board, but everyone also knew it was kind of cool and that the so-called risk / cost / downside was not worth worrying about.
Didn't Nikki Hiltz nearly do this just this year at The Ten or Track Fest? I guess the difference is she didn't get lapped and re-pace the leader. She was pacing the ten and after going as far as she could she dropped back half a lap and then paced one of the chase groups. I think the may have even been lapped before dropping out, but she didn't re-pace the leader so it seems okay.
Looks like Monaco doesn’t have a mens 1500 next year. Maybe he’ll do 1500m in Paris and mile in Eugene instead
Paris doesn’t have one either. Maybe they’d add them as non-diamond league races if he asks? Seems really weird, especially monaco which will have only had one men’s 1500 in 4 years

The lights indeed make pacing more manageable, taking the guesswork out of maintaining a consistent speed like 55.2-55.2-55. It's a useful tool for athletes aiming for precision during their races. For more on this topic, check out.
I enjoyed reading the Perfect Mile and one part I thought was interesting was that on a previous record attempt, one of Bannister’s pacers jogged and got lapped so could pace later in the race. Perhaps that strategy could be employed again if legal, albeit a lot of people wouldn’t respect the use of that strategy.
It’s not legal and it would be just like Kipchoge’s sub-2:00. If Ingebrigtsen is going to set a WR, he should earn it.

Sadly this is illegal according to WA rules. As per the technical handbook:
6.3.1 Pacing in races by persons not participating in the same race, by athletes lapped or about to be lapped or by any kind of technical device (other than those permitted under Rule 6.4.4 of the Technical Rules).
Guess this rule didn’t apply in Bannister’s era then, and neither in Henry Rono’s -in 1981 when the latter set his 13.06 WR in Norway (Knarvik) Steve Cram let him self get lapped and then paced Rono further on…
The WC in Tokyo is from september 13th to september 21s. Why sooo late?? It there a good reasons for this?
(Doha 2019 was really late, due too very hot climate. That can't be the reasoning here. It says that the daily mean temperature in Tokyo in august is 26.9C/80.4F and mean daily maximum i august is 31.3C/88.3F. Eugene '22 was hotter than that. I don't get it.)

It’s very humid in Tokyo so the later, the better.

The reasoning is world athletics wanting the WC to end the season rather than be plucked in the middle of it. This is so that it acts as the finale rather than being plucked in the middle.
Never will get a world record in Olympic event. 2000m + 3000m are gimmick events. Also, Ingebrigtswen is likely doping, no chsance he breaks the grest El G's records.
12:48, 13 seconds or the full straight behind Cheptegei. No chance.
Only in letsrun people think about him breaking the 10000m record. 63min, had to walk. CHeptegei will lap him.
He's probably exaggerating by saying it needs to be one of the top eight in the world. People like Habz and Hoare could pace it for 1100m. The best bet might be one of the top Kenyans like Koech, Kipsang, or Reynauld Cheruiyot. I think they could all get Jakob to 1100 in 2:31 or at least 1000 in 2:17. If organisers or Jakob pay them more than they could earn from coming first or second in the race, then they might agree to pace
"It is worth mentioning here that, on the occasion of El Guerrouj’s record, it was Ngeny who led the Moroccan through the 1100-metre mark, going through 1000m in 2:18.5. Another passage at this speed shouldn’t be too hard a task for Ngeny, the problem will be to see whether he has the stamina to finish like El Guerrouj in Rome: running the last 400 metres in 53.5."
In a recent interview, Jakob Ingebrigtsen discussed his plans for world record attempts in 2025, focusing on the 1500m event. He emphasized the importance of securing top-tier pacers, noting the challenge of convincing elite competitors to assist
even with substantial financial incentives. The discussion also highlighted the evolving dynamics of athlete collaboration and the strategic considerations involved in record-breaking pursuits.
Susjati and maybe Wayonyi at 1500m next season, will be a little like the old days, fondly remembered by so many here, if they aren't caught first. The problem is, they might help Jakob to run 3:25.5, but they will be running 3:24.
Darling I so agree with you!!!! You are so vicious for clean sport and I love that about you!!!! Shame on these 1:41 800m runners for doping up our sport. Personally though, I will chop off my neck if ever ever my king Hicham El King Guerrouj loses his 3:26:00 WR to anybody. I will quit this board fuming forever and ever and ever make no mistake about that!!!!!!
