sincere question from an old-timer, how do these people influence you?
will races start giving appearance fees to folks like this as opposed to actual professionals competing for the win? or is that not really at risk at this point?
They already do. They get flown over, all sorts of free gear, free bib and straight up cash to host “shake outs” and live podcasts and whatnot.
that's cool man, good for them, truly. not easy to make a living in this world.
at the same time though, it's weird that i know more about these influencers via this thread than the top competitors at the race. maybe i passed over it (twice, as i did go back and look again) but I didn't even see on here who won. all i know is Nick Bester, who i'd never heard of before, broke.
who actually won the race? what time did they run? and most importantly of course, how many followers do they have?

Oh you have a very valid point.
There's a couple of reasons for it I think.
- This wasn't the best elite field and they were far from any exciting record - The Ethiopians and Kenyans might be the best long distance runners, but they're not the most exciting runners to watch. I watched the post-race interviews with both winners and I didn't get a single bit of interesting information out of that. - We're living in a world where the sub-elite influencers are making a lot more money using their model than almost all of the elite runners. It's because they're more interesting, and we get to know their personalities (whether we love or hate them, many of us do watch their videos regardless)

thanks for the follow-up of sort, makes sense
i saw they were on pace for 2:01:30 and thought that was quite impressive, but then they must have dropped off because the updates started talking about these other folks
not sure anyone has posted it yet, who actually won the race?! what time did they run?
You’ve obviously got access to the internet. Why don’t you look up who won and what time they ran of you care??
honestly, why do you think i clicked on this thread in the first place? certainly not to read about people trying to get a new PB in their follower count.
so pardon me for thinking "Official 2024 BMW Berlin Marathon Live Discussion Thread" would include who won the actual race and what time they ran
Rojo thinks he’s Colin Cowherd but he’s more of a skip bayless. Out of touch with fans and doesn’t watch the races
Unfair. We had my genetic equal weldon move to San Francisco so he could watch all the marathons at midnight. Whatever he does, I get credit for as we used to be the same person.
in case we needed a reminder that the world marathon majors is a commercially driven entity with more meaning for hobby joggers than the people who are actually the best in the world.
