Mostly what I’ve learned from this thread is that LRers have no idea how sprinters train and consider running faster than a jog to be “training like a sprinter.”
”The quickest way to get injured as an older man, is to think that you still have the body of a younger one.”
IF you are going to go down this road…don’t let your ego, fuelled by memories of your younger days, take over your body and it’s actions. Put the ego to one side and listen carefully to what your body is telling you.
None of us are good enough to get paid for this stuff. And most of us aren’t good enough to be competitive at any level. So keep it in perspective.
Remember…elite is elite…and then there’s the rest of us…
I would imagine that they would be as much, if not more at risk…
…as their minds would sometimes take them where their connective tissues and joints would not be able to go…
No, they're not. Many of these TRT monsters are reversing aging. They're putting on lean muscle mass & strengthening their joints like they did when they were in their peak youth years.
And a lot of them have YouTube channels where they are "fitness influencers" but in reality they're narcissists just showing off.
There's a 60 yr old dude I know personally who's heavy on the TRT and has a YouTube channel where he films a lot of his workouts. He's setting PRs in the bench, squat & deadlift! 😲 He'll also film himself running sprints at the track - which he said he couldn't do pre-TRT!
You youngsters have no idea how potent TRT is with middle-aged guys who are willing to put in the work & eat a healthy diet with lots of protein.
For people working office jobs , sure. For people doing jobs that require standing or walking, debatable. I work as a hospital nurse and I’m 28 and I have no energy to sprint anymore. I ran 47 seconds when I was 23 -25 in school. Now I would be so burnt out either at work or on the track leading this double life. That’s why I reverted to being a hobby jogger.
Yeah, I feel sorry for the trudgers. My wife and I (mid to late 50s) do plyos and short speed every Saturday. There's a need for fitness and work capacity also, but I think it's important to try to stay springy.
You do plyos in your 50s? Not sure I would recommend that.
Sprints and interval training to get the heart rate up, sure.

That's fine, that is fine. But there should also be some cardio in your life regardless of your event or age. I know people in there 50s who went the powerlifting route and because of heart attacks wound up going back to the aerobics route anyway!

At 28 you still should very well be able to do an easy sprint workout after your jog. Let's say you run 2 miles. Why not do 4 x 40 right afterwards @ 80%. I do it all the time and I am closing in on 70.

For most older people, maybe not the letsrun community, a brisk walk satisfies the cardio requirement.
I like Holler's Feed the Cats, but keep in mind that Holler is typically talking to coaches. His 10 drills in 10 minutes helps coaches fit in the drills in a limited time window AND so the coach can observe the athletes doing the drills. Also, he's working with novice HS freshmen and experienced HS sprinters/athletes. He's not working with age 50+ recreational runners.
My first-hand experience trying to do Holler's workouts is that even as a veteran runner, I had to constantly ask, "Can I handle this drill? Should I modify it to fit my injury history and age?"
For example, I do one leg jumps up stadium steps, but I hold on to the handrail just in case I don't make it! As a HS, I could recover from a skinned shin in a couple of days, but as a senior citizen, it might take a month.
Agreed.
Do the work you can handle. If you can not handle doing 4x40m + 2x60m from a standing start @ 98%, then don't do it. If you instead do 4x60m + 2x120m @ 92% and that feels much safer, do it. You will still likely gain speed.
You don't have to do Holler's exact drills. If you can't do his big box jump movements, do something easier. If doing 10 drills wears on you too much, do 5 or 6.
As long as you're moving faster, not hurting yourself, and enjoying the workout, it seems like a win to me.
Why not BACK OFF to 4 x 40 @ 80% then move on from there in your intensities and distance?

Some of the TRT guys are doing cardio. For example, "Scooby 1961" is an avid cyclist (YouTube fitness influencer). He's got a Herculean physique & looks better than most guys half his age! 😯
I think more of these guys are incorporating cardio with their TRT program. I see more of them hopping on treadmill or stair master after their killer workouts at my gym.
It's amazing how just a weekly injection of test completely transforms their body reversing aging.

"Here's my take" sounds like a bot ad for TRT.. so that's my take.
Mostly what I’ve learned from this thread is that LRers have no idea how sprinters train and consider running faster than a jog to be “training like a sprinter.”
I'd say that some people definitely think going faster than a jog is "sprinting." I was doing a miler workout at the track, sets of 300/200/200. A guy asked me if I ever ran non-sprinting events and I was like, "Uhhhh..." A friend into ultras told me they wanted to get faster and I was about to start talking about 4x40m flys and plyos and olympic lifts, then I took a breath and thought for a second, then advised they do 3–4x10–15s strides a few times a week. A few weeks later they said they felt snappier and faster.
BUT, not all LRers believe anything remotely fast is sprinting, and many here have made it very clear. The counterpoint is that there's some here who think that if you're not working exclusively on top end speed in an idealistic way, then it's not "sprint training," which is disingenuous and shows a really simple understanding of training modalities.
I knew a 10.high, 20.high, 45.mid guy. His favorite workout that he repeated many times a season was 300/200/100. At no point did he touch on MaxV, but he would outrun 99.99% of posters here. Would you tell him that he wasn't training for sprints?

That's fine.
I was just trying to drive home the point that you don't have to be working at 95+% MaxV and taking exactly 1 min rest/10m run and that doing tens of extra meters truly does not matter to the average person exercising and they can still make gains. That stuff only really matters if you need to compete and get the absolute most out of yourself.
That's fine, that is fine. But there should also be some cardio in your life regardless of your event or age. I know people in there 50s who went the powerlifting route and because of heart attacks wound up going back to the aerobics route anyway!

All these TRT daddies are gonna come down with some weird, new cancer or some other crazy issues in the next few decades.
The issue is not the TRT itself, it's been shown to be pretty safe when used as advised. It doesn't cause cancer afaik, but it can fuel it once it starts. The other issue is these guys you see on social media go to a shady Dr. Feelgood and take too much and are likely taking other substances on top.

True I could but also 4x40 sprint is an actual workout if you sprint it. 80% is slow and not a sprint speed. If you mean effort you’re not suppose to run that way cause it’s impossible to estimate percentage of effort

If you only ever run at 50% your max speed and you safely begin to incorporate some form of work at 80% your max speed, you are very likely to gain speed and athleticism.
It's not impossible to estimate percentage of effort, what do you even mean? A million good coaches use percentages to prescribe workouts.

Do you think that the guy on the video, near the start of this thread, is on TRT?
If you're talking about the "I Am Longevity" guy - I don't think he's using TRT since he's admitted to using Dehydroepiandrostone (DHEA) as part of anti-aging protocol.
DHEA is the "poor-man's TRT." There's a meta-analysis in the literature that showed DHEA supplementation increases testosterone levels, though the magnitude varies among different subgroups. And since it's sold as a dietary supplement for pennies, it's readily available for anyone.
Here's his videos on DHEA. Looks like he's sold on it:

No good coaches use percent effort! That’s a misconception. It’s an arbitrary number that’s impossible to determine. Sure you can use it in a warm up , because it’s just a guess on feeling good. If you’re a sprinter and going off online workouts and using percent effort , you’re doing it wrong. It’s always about a ratio of your personal best time, which is another reason nobody uses it for something like 40 meters. It’s 80m and up . Shorter stuff is just an all out sprint or estimating it (on a day before a meet or as a warmup)
