Just rewatched Budapest 1500 final for first time after hearing a year's worth of hype about Kerr's incredible kicking.
Meh.
He barely outkicked Jakob and that was after Jakob slouched in the second lap with a 58 second lap.
If Jakob comes through 800 and 1200 two seconds faster, then Kerr's kick would be even weaker.
Obviously they've both improved compared to a year ago, but I was surprised upon rewatching at how -- in hindsight and given all the talk of recent months -- NOT convincing Kerr's win was.
It was a good win, but the sort that leaves me thinking it could have gone either way.
I saw Ingebrigtsen looking intensely around at Kerr because he really wanted to win that heat, while Kerr just jogged it in for a final spot... For me Ingebrigtsen is really insecure even though he wants to image Kerr as that... Kerr didn't "Kerr" about winning a heat, he is in Paris for the Gold only.
Give me one sub 3:29 race where you have seen Kerr outkick Jakob (or anyone at all).
I don't think we can read too much out of the semis, other than Jakob and Josh being the main contenders for the gold.
This is impossible because Kerr has never run sub 3:29. His PR has not droppes since 2021.
Thanks for underlining my point. And yes, the mile may convert to sub 3:29, but have in mind that it was the first competition for Jakob after the injury, with a winning time 2 seconds behind Jakob's PR on the mile. Jakobs PR on the mile converted is 3:27:12 on 1500, a time he destroyed in Monaco this year with 3:26:73.
I am not to say Kerr may not win, I merely suggest that Kerr has not demonstrated his superior kick in a sub 3:29 race, and if you take into account the mile - against a fit Jakob.

In general there tends to be too much focus on Jakob's fast times and not enough on the fact that he has never tried to solo a PB in a championship race. That is what it will take to maximize his chances for a gold, but I have no reason to think he will fully commit from the gun. His slightly slow reaction to taking over the race will do him in. Kerr would take a championship gold over any fast result, which doesn't mean he's not much faster than what we've seen. And if history is of any indication, Kerr is peaking again for a SB when it most counts. Jakob may be peaking as well, but this race is still about tactics and unless Jakob is going to solo a sub 3:27 I think Kerr is favorite.

Correct. I think JI was trying to read that race as him daring Kerr to pass him and he would not do it because he's inferior. Kerr is not playing into these games. The guy is fkn dialed in for gold only.

Kerr has closed his PB gap to Jakob since then even though Jakob has gotten faster. And unless Jakob is going to solo a sub 3:27 Kerr is going to absolutely be sitting right on him. No way he leaves a 2-second gap. I think last year played perfectly into Kerr's hands but he has propelled his confidence and fitness into new heights since. I don not think any other 1500 is as hungry and focused as he is on gold. Jakob has the 5k and I believe he is worried given his history in championship 1500s. And this time it won't be worth it for potato Tim to pace him as he will miss out on a medal.

You guys crack me up.
First, I don't understand what it is you're articulating here, but I suspect it's a dig at JI and lionizing Kerr for being the big man and not winning the heat.
Recall that Kerr stomped to victory in his first round heat while the "really insecure" JI was content to merely qualify for the semis.
You guys are trying to read too much into these rounds, all the more so because you're squeezing Pro-Kerr narratives out of nothing

This. Kerr looks incredible, but Jakob kept him wide in Budapest before the homestraight. If Budapest was 1550m Nordås would have gotten the gold. Kerr will crush his PR, but Jakob takes it in 3.26.8-3.27.5 range. Nordås for bronze again when everyone else dies in the final100

My point wasn't that Kerr would be two seconds behind Jakob with 300m left.
My point was that Kerr would have less kick in his legs if he'd run the first 1200 meters two seconds faster.
And that that would be a marginal advantage to Jakob compared to the way the Budapest final ended up (which, as I explained, was less of a dominating performance from Kerr than I had remembered it being)

The sure way for Jakob to win is to run a 3:27, but he'll have to solo that. There is no indication that he will do it. Do you think he will?

The only one on crack here is you yank. Wash your hands after touching Jakob in your dreams.

More like he was checking around him to see where the top 6 were, like what he has done in literally every other championship round.

This seemed crazy not long ago. But lets be honest, if he can hang at all with these dudes, they do not have his kick. He has a chance. Problem is this final will not be tactical at all imo. He'll need 3:20s for sure maybe even WR. Those top 3 dudes looked fresh after 332.
Why do we all ignore the fact that Kerr's rise has coincided with JI being injured? We act like that didn't happen. JI was on his way to WR when we he got injury. Maybe Kerr wins, but if JI is healthy and peaking at the right time, he has no chance.

When Kerr defeated Jakob last year in Budapest Jakob was not injured.
