Who are the up and coming American collegiate distance runners, who could be in the mix in 4 years? It’s likely the coming year will be dominated by a Kenyan. Who’s in line after that?
Two Kenyans, Doris or Hilda. But if they set her loose, the semi-pro Hilda could repeat what Valby did, 5 Individual NCAA Championships in one year.
Doris Lemngole is the semi-pro (previously pacing a DL steeplechase race), and she is the one most likely to pull off the Big 5.
I was at the event. Looked like a business trip for Tuohy. she ran with the pack for a while, took the lead, nobody went with her and she cruised. for those saying she didn't close hard, well, she didn't need to. it wasn't a time trial. she didn't look tired at all when she finished, clearly had a lot left in the tank. i think this was about getting her racing legs back and for what it's worth it was successful.
look forward to watching her compete in Europe, probably go thru some growing pains against elite runners, but that's the only way you get better.
I don't buy the "she didn't need to" stuff. If she had it to close in 68-67 the last 800m, she would have certainly done that.
Nonetheless, this was an encouraging effort. Very close to her PR.
The question is how quickly can she get to 1440s because that is really where she needs to get to, to have a real pro career in the 5k, even in the US right now.
If you look closely there are signs she was straining a bit in the last 800. Not fading, but hardly cruising. And yes, tough to be really competitive in US championships until running 14:40-45.

Yeah she went like 72/70, which is not a fast close for her. Against this field it was fine. But positively, compared to the race where she set her 15:03 PR she looked way less tired. And coming by from injury seems like a good sign.
If she doesn't drop some major PRs by September though, she needs to seriously think about dumping this coach and moving away from NC state, to altitude. Steelman and Shaw are continuing to run pretty much the same times they did in college, little to no improvement. I hate to see Tuohy's talent wasted. Her last great performances were a year and a half ago.
Henes is 25. Donaghu is 26. Morgan is 26. Kelati is 27.
Schweizer is 28.
Andrews is 28.
Cranny is 28.
ESP is 29.
Interesting that there are no competitive 23 or 24 yr-olds in the above list.
Will McClean (28) or Mackay (26) of Boston New Balance move up to the 5000m in the next year or two? Any others of note not on the list?
I'd scratch MacLean. She's been strictly an 800/1500 runner throughout her career; MacLean still holds a 9:03 3000 pb from 2017 and has never fooled with the 5000. Mackay's current pbs [3:55/8:40/15:14] compare nicely with St Pierre's when the Vermonter was 26 [3:58/8:36/15:08].
Taylor Roe could level up after a year or two of consistent pro training. Her 3k/5k and XC results at OkSt were superior to Cranny's college bests. Paityn Noe hasn't shown any 1500 speed yet, but 15:34 as a true freshman with a big 10k engine marks her as one to watch.

Shaw is not being coached by Henes and both Shaw and Steelman are at altitude full time. What are you even talking about?
After racing 6 years on the hs team(yes in NY Jr high kids can be on hs varsity teams) and and then straight through her years at NC State not surprising she finally had an injury that required her to take a much needed extended break. Great that she is healthy and back running and racing. Still lots of the season to go post Olympics to run fast. This win is a great jump off to her rebooted career

I am looking for a meet in which she might find a 5000 with the right competition and I am coming up short unless she can get into a Diamond League field somehow (and it isn't too fast) which seems questionable to me. The Continental Tour meets are indicating 3000s and no 5000s as far as I can see. (9/1 Poland, 9/3 Denmark, 9/3 Italy, 9/8 Italy, 9/8 Croatia). So perhaps temper expectations for a 5000 pr as the available race distance may be 1500 or 3000. The next fast 5000 opportunity might be this winter at BU.
