As a trail runner I find this discussion interesting. I rarely buy road shoes since I live very close to plenty of miles of trail so I really don't have a need for them. To me Nike just seems to know how to make a good shoe. I recall the early versions of the Wildhorse and Kiger and how with what seems not much effort or attention to their trail lineup make better all-around shoes than most others. With Nike I never really have to worry if I need a size 10.5 or 11 etc... I don't have to worry if some latest gimmick is going to work for me or not because their shoes just work.
I don't have this same experience with other brands. People are saying "they are garbage" all the time but the Wildhorse for example has long been one of the most durable and versatile trail shoes on the market.
It seems to me that often as is the case with "fashion" and apparel that it is far less about the function and far more about the trend. For awhile I got suckered into the FOMO with Hoka shoes and tried to make myself enjoy them since it seems like everyone loves them. But they never fit my foot very good and the materials definitely seem subpar with premature tears/holes and the foam compressing after just a few hundred miles. I guess thats the power of marketing.
