Yeah but now you argue Aregawi deserves the nod. He finally nailed his timing of the kick. He could’ve been close to win had the level of box and going wide he had to deal with had been less.
Kejelcha once again ruins his own chances to pace his teammates and the rest of the field. We have seen him do this a million times in the Diamond League over the years. Aregawi had a great finish but I think it’s pretty clear Kejelcha was the fittest of the Ethiopian trio today. I’ll never understand why he does so much of the work. I have a ton of respect for him but it’s brutal to see this over and over again.
Mehary placed 6th in the 5000. He was Ethiopia's #2 finisher in this race.
Kejelcha placed 6th in the 10000. He was Ethiopia's #2 finisher in this race.
They performed the same.
In the end, replacing Kejelcha with Mehary in the 5000 was neither unreasonable nor absurd.

Kejelcha might have been able to set the pace for the last 600 for Gebrhiwet like what he did for Edris though. It wouldn't change who took gold, but Geb might have gone home with a medal.
