Easy to get there from almost anywhere in NYC and it's environs and early June weather is ideal - low to mid 70's and relatively low humidity.

Amen, brother! Most of the bashers have never set foot in Eugene. The rest are miserable fools that think Franklin Street or the budget hotel/fast food cluster at Gateway Mall is the entirety of Eugene.

Except that...I had relatives in Oregon before state hood. I was born, raised, schooled (Uof0) so I have some gravitas to be critical. I am happy that you and others are happy with Eugene and the surrounding area, but it is not a world class destination and has the same access to the beach and mountains for pretty much of the entirety of I-5 corridor in OR and WA

Mckenzie River has a beautiful trail, waterfalls, hot springs, the Blue Pool. So much to see and do, trails all over besides the Mckenzie. Nearby mountains that are breathtaking.
The wine country is world class, plenty of wine tasting nearby.
The coast is the the most beautiful in the country and it is all open to the public, all 380 miles.
Problem is runners are boring people and aren't willing to explore. And, track meets are boring to watch. That is the real problem with the meets there. Hayward has 3 advantages over Austin for major track meets.
1. The stadium is honestly much, much better 2. The track is faster 3. The weather is usually much better for the athletes and spectators
1 and 2 could be "easily" taken care of with a re-model. It would be costly, but add some seatbacks and some shade along with a world-class track surface. The heat....yeahhhhh, maybe they could figure out a way to "AC" the stadium like they did for the World Cup in Qatar
That's about the only advantages Hayward really has. Austin is wayyyy easier to get in and out of. Way more to do. More places to eat. More places to stay.
If you've been to both places, which one would you honestly want to go back to for track and hanging out for a long weekend or even an Olympic Trials? Again, fix 1 and 2 above and there is no debate.
Who cares if the track is faster when the 1500,5K, and 10K are usually tactical.

HRE this was a cheap hit on Eugene not a sincere effort to grow the sport. There will be no new facilities so let make the best of what we have, & I live 900 miles south.

But those meets were either "home" meets for the U of O, championship or trials meets where there was always a fair few U of O entrants. There was always a question of how much of that interest would transfer to a meet that wasn't really connected to the university team in some way.

Dude, just say you’re old and/or rich and get over it. All of those things are great, and a great pitch to visit a place if that’s what you’re looking for. But? How do normal people justify traveling far distances for sport events?
-they already live there (Aka not that many people in Eugene)
-they have family/friends they can ALSO visit there
-it’s easy/cheap/convenient to get to (not EU!)
-it’s ALSO in a place they’ve always wanted to go (think New York, Los Angeles, Miami!) that they can do other things before, after, or even during!

Eh, I don't know. I'm in NYC and Icahn is actually a pain in the butt to get to. It's also a dump that is pretty much directly under a freeway.
The largest problem, as others have said, is that track is pretty boring to watch and that there is way, way too much downtime. Just look at some of the schedules, even for a televised meet! The 100m might go off at 1:00pm for the Men and 1:10pm for the Women -- even though the race is 10 seconds long -- and then you wait another 10 minutes for whatever event is next. From the end of the preceding race to the start of the one after the 100m, that's 20 seconds of action and 27:40 of sitting on your butt watching a bunch of people warm up.

I have to say Eugene around heyward has declined…the meth factor is really bad, but there is still enough mystique to keep me coming back and the stadium is awesome.
The perfect track stadium/locations have already been around, and proven! In the United States!
Atlanta and Los Angeles! Both cities have hosted the Olympics, both had track stadiums with OVER 85 THOUSAND! And were, as you’d expect, packed for the games in which they hosted. Atlanta track stadium? Now an MLB field! Los Angeles Colosseum, arguably the most beautiful and significant track stadium in history? A Football field.
Those cities, those beautiful stadiums, are perfect and could host a sport that people don’t even realize how much they love but the problem is WE DONT HAVE A PRO TRACK LEAGUE TO MAINTAIN IT! It’s simply real estate worth far too much for a city to risk not having a major TEAM rent it out, use consistently for meets with other TEAMS AND host college meets, ncaa finals, DL’s, Olympic trials.
Eugene is a bad place to consistently host meets but it’s also not their or UofO’s fault that this sport is still so held back from the “purity” bs that prevented track athletes from getting paid for so many years. Without a real pro league, Eugene is more then what we should expect
