When their food is paid for by my tax dollars, I should have a say.

The article keeps saying food stamps. When was the last time anyone saw a food stamp? 40 years ago. It used to be a food coupon. And the poster said welfare grocery lists. SMH...SNAP is based on income. I knew many grad students of all races that were on SNAP.

As for the type of food...Hell folks not on SNAP buy tons of junk food!

I guess the United States could just get rid of SNAP, TANF, SSI, Medicaid, Disability. Then tens of millions of poor white people would just disappear.

I'm not defending people who stick their hand out for government freebies, but poor people buy that stuff because it's high calorie. It's the same reason you see so many poor people in McDonald's eating Big Macs. Greatest caloric bang for the buck. Not all poor people are consciously aware of this, but it is why they buy high calorie foods.

Calorie-dense but not nutrient dense. Hence the tendency to overeat to "fullness" as opposed to satiety. Eating NUTRIENT-dense foods leaves you satiated without overeating while calorie-dense foods leave you FULL...until you're hungry again an hour or a couple of hours later.

People in Flint, MI probably prefer buying water at the store.

Liberal here, since the government is paying for this food they should put much greater limits on the types of food that can be purchased. It will be much better for the kids dependent on parent food choices.

I volunteer in our local food pantry and we only give out high quality healthy food. You won't find any potato chips or soda or anything like that being given out by our pantry.

The people getting the free benefits should be allowed to buy whatever they want with it, including cigarettes, pot, or booze.

After all, we don't want the government to legislate what people do with their own money.

$13 of beans and rice would net you way more calories (and meals) than a $13 Big Mac. It's not even close to the best bang for the buck. It's just the easy decision when you have no discipline.

The states with the highest percentage of their population on SNAP and TANF are rural southern republican states.

Big Mac costs like $4, Bean Boy. Two beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onion on a sesame seed bun. Where you going to get that for $4, Tex? Some miserable little sushi place? Beans and rice, my azz.

i've seen welfare people hanging outside 7-11 offering to sell you their food stamps for 50 cents on the dollar then take the money and buy scratcher tickets.

Food stamps should not pay for ultra processed food. The only reason it does is because the processed food companies are owned by the same companies that own the big pharmaceutical companies as well. They make bank getting people sick with the ultraprocessed food and then get paid again selling the pharmaceuticals to mask the symptoms of the disease of the food they sold.

If food stamps did not cover processed food, the food deserts people are referring to would have to change what they are selling.

Processed food companies are doing what big tobacco did years ago but they control thr federal government and are allowed to sell food containing soybean oil and other seed oils which is a known obesogen:

You cannot blame poor people for obesity when companies are allowed to sell seed oils in food which is promoted by the American Heart Association as healthy.

Am I stating the obvious by saying that there is a correlation (read: causation) between low IQ, poverty, and poor dietary choices?

Here, in the wealthiest nation on Earth, the only way to end up needing welfare long-term is to be pretty lazy and make poor decisions. Is there any doubt that people who are pretty lazy and make poor decisions do the same when shopping at the grocery store and preparing meals?

Personally I think very carefully about everything I put in my body. That doesn't mean I don't do the occasional snack or cookie but the vast majority of what I eat is there to fuel me and help me age as slowly as possible.

It's almost like poor people often lie in areas with bad water? Flint, MI?
