It wasn't that bad. The interviewers were talking over each other and she had to decide which one to answer. She probably just wants to go hang with her teammates. It's not unusual for a kid to be fast in high school without training specific running miles.
The interviewer's question was apparently "slandering" her, too. It is hard for fans to accept that not everyone out there sees her successes the way you do. They don't get how less training than everyone else makes her a much better athlete than everyone else.
She’s not doing less training, Bro. Cross-training counts as training. It literally has the word “training” in it.
And hobby-joggers "train". Cross-training isn't the same as running training, which is what the best athletes do. If cross-training was better they would all be doing it. They aren't.
There wouldn't be so much interest in her cross-training if it wasn't for the fact that people are trying to understand how she gets results that no other top distance runners appear to get from that kind of training.
She does the same amount of training. And the best athletes don't do more training. There are thousands of 15 minute 5k guys doing more training than the 13 minute guys. I know you won't address my point because you can't grasp the fact that talent varies. The best athlete in every event is more talented.
She does not do the same amount of training. You are either uninformed or lying. She runs 2-3 days a week and no great distances. The rest is on an arc trainer. That is not what the best distance runners are doing. They do high mileage. As for "thousands of 15min guys doing more training than the 13min guys" - you're talking garbage that you have made up.
We already know how Parker trains. the interviewers need to lay off the obvious and find some other questions to ask her. She has found a training style that works for her and leads to her performing the best way she can while staying healthy. we should be praising her and celebrating the fact that she doesn’t feel the pressure to run an excessive amount of miles that would obviously, for her, lead to injury. Too many distance runners are suffering from overtraining and getting stuck in a cycle of injuries because they don’t have enough sense or a coach that tailors a training program specific to the individual.
So an athlete who is so injury-prone she can't train like the best and strongest runners is nonetheless far better than all of them amongst her peers. How weakness is better than strength in a top athlete. Only on Letsrun.

No one said cross training is the same as running. But because you just want to slander Parker, you ignore evidence.

The post I responded to said she isn't doing less training than others. So cross-training is seen as equivalent. It isn't.

"It isn't" - From a man who thought cross-training = running on a treadmill.
You know nothing about training, nothing about physiology you are a frustrated old loner trying to give your life meaning by attacking other people. Do the world a favor and shut the F up.
There is nothing about that story that is disputable, no? She displayed latent talent by running a 10:10 2mile as a raw, relatively overweight high-school junior. Her old and new coaches say she trains very hard.
aaaaaaaaand this is why eating disorder culture is strong in running….
Valby is socially awkward. It’s beyond obvious she just doesn’t know how to talk and communicate and how to portray what she wants to be. And it comes off as her trying way too hard.
I’m not an elite athlete but my daughter’s boyfriend is.
He is a total dork , I have no idea how she puts up with him.
I put this down to him spending too much time by himself running laps and not enough time smoking weed and hanging out at White Castle with his friends.
Normally Parker Valby is a hoot in the interviews, but ESPN, please keep Fernando at home. He's been difficult to watch/listen to all weekend.
Most of his interviews were fine, other than the beginning of the first day when he was obsessed with the weather and asked every athlete a related question.
With Parker it was awkward but I loved the part where he said it was his first time interviewing her and she said, "Congratulations."
The remainder would have unfolded totally differently if he had sensed the value of that moment, allowing a pause. Both would have relaxed.

Cross-training isn’t the same as running training, but it still counts as part of an overall training program, Bro.
The best training program varies by individual. A good example is Hobbs Kessler. He said he feels fatigued and sluggish if he does his daily mileage in singles, but he feels fresher if he splits it up into doubles. Other runners can thrive on singles. Different strokes for different folks.
The best training program is tailored to an individual athlete’s strengths and needs. The key is that the training program enables the athlete to improve their fitness while avoiding injury. Valby’s coaches have found a training program that has helped her do just that.

When Valby says she didn’t train that hard in high school, people will come on here, acting like they are in the know, and blatantly accuse her of lying. They’ll say she was running “high mileage”.
Just go to milesplit. There is a video out there where her local tv station comes out to interview the local ‘phenom’ with her high school coach. I was shocked when I first saw that video. She does some toe-touches to warm up. She looks awkward and ‘pudgy’ compared to the typical high-caliber runner.
Maybe she had a week or two, or a month here and there of running ‘high mileage’, but with that video (and other videos and photos), I find it hard to believe she was training even close to the level of the ‘prodigies’ that train year-round, and certainly not at her Div I level of training now.
Newbury Park had it dialed in. They were training their athletes at a high collegiate/pro level. That video tells me there is no way Valby was training like that.

So it is all relative.
But she obviously was talented. Just compare the size of a collegiate-level female la crosse player to that of a runner. Relatively speaking, which of the two looks ‘pudgy’?
Anyway, does that explain her strange ability to recover from injury and achieve peak fitness much faster than the typical injured college runner that even her competitors have noticed and mentioned? Not even close, and we saw it in conspicuous detail in 2022 and 2023, both times in a matter of weeks. Does it explain her odd lack of natural fatigue, and her ability to kamikazee races using huge efforts with no seeming adverse effects, as we saw to an absurd degree at ncaa indoors? No. And then we have a huge leap in form from last year. All explained by using an arc trainer and her supposedly magical latent talent. Ok. But it has distinct hallmarks of something else. I'm just not as credulous.
She is not social awkward. My issue is that she is not honest. She says the key to her huge improvement over the last two years is from staying healthy. Up until the last few months, she has had multiple injuries. She also said she didn't run in highschool (indicating that her 10:10 in the 3200 was all talent.) She was high mileage in highschool. What she says now is very untrustworthy
I have heard this too. Sometimes she credits her growth to running more now, but in other interviews says she barely runs. She has talked about barely running through her injuries but suddenly she credits being healthy with her progress. She says she barely runs but does atleast one long run a week. In one interviews she said she ran 30 mpw or more in highschool.
Her answers are all over the place and the inconsistency is weird.

I don’t know how serious the weird ‘nerve’ injury was, so it is hard to say whether or not there was a miraculous recovery. She sat out indoor with it, and then ran some outdoor with a hitch in her stride. Who knows, maybe it was a bit psychosomatic, where her mind would not let her perform until she felt she was fit enough; while her new coaches wanted her training the old-school way, but her mind was saying she needs to cross-train in order to avoid another terrible injury cycle.
I (or you) don’t know exactly what was going on with her there to be able to conclude “recovered from from injury and achieve peak fitness much faster than the typical injured college runner”, since the injury itself was atypical.
The other injury that comes to mind is the foot fracture. It was five months before she was back to where she was before the fracture. Not knowing the exact nature of the injury, how can one conclude that was an extraordinary rate of recovery?
“even her competitors have noticed” That is silly. Of course her fiercest competitors are going to question her. Don’t you think Nico and now Colin (from NAU) have competition wondering what’s going on? That is part of the game.
