I even tip the high school people who stand at the door and show you to your seat
I’m old, gonna die in the not too distant future and I admire young people who can go against the anti-work sentiment that seems to pervade this generation

Yea, but if you go to Europe, even the U.K., the concept of restaurant "service" doesn't usually exist. Locals, not just tourists, are used to walking in to a restaurant and being ignored or interacting with cashiers or waitresses who have bad attitudes towards customers. Waitresses at restaurants are extremely lazy and sometimes make customers wait for a table when the restaurant is only half full, because they don't to have to serve more tables while getting paid the same.
That's the tradeoff you get with salary-based versus commission-based service jobs.
I do agree that things have gotten out of hand in the U.S., though.
I'm already getting extorted $50 for a 15-minute Uber ride, and I'm expected to tip on top of that? Why would I feel compelled to do so (other than fear of getting a bad rating from the driver)?
I'm supposed to tip the guy who drives the hotel shuttle to/from the airport (and, yes, I know this one has been customary before recently), but nobody carries cash nowadays, so I either have to remember to make a trip to the ATM (and another trip to a store to break up the $20 bill) or I have to get the guy aside and ask "What's your Venmo? Oh, you only have Zelle? [...]".
I've been in some restaurants in Seattle that don't do tipping. They have signs on their walls that say "We pay our workers well and don't need tips" or something like that. That's cool.
I also feel that tipping is kind of a status/ego thing for a lot of people. Paying high tips makes you feel like a high roller or philanthropist or something.
What I totally disagree with is that idea that low tippers are ungenerous people, and conversely, high tippers are generous people. I know people who are extremely generous overall with money in their life, but, for whatever reason, just don't tip much.
I spent 3 weeks in the Uk last summer. I experienced a wide range of service from excellent to poor. Pretty much the same range I get in the US.

Didnt you know, in America you pay for your food and you pay their salary.
The word tip shouldn't even be used, its more of an additional tax than anything.
Ah, tipping in America. Very interesting custom. You say it's like extra tax? Well, tax collector wear fancy suit, not wear apron like waiter. Maybe they take less tip?
Problem is tip less, waiter sad. Waiter sad, service bad. Service bad, customer mad. Customer mad, restaurant sad. Restaurant sad, everybody go home.

Here in the King County WA, minimum wage is more than $20 per hour. Tipped employees are not exempt. I'm curious how much you think restaurant "servers" should be paid such that 15% is enough and we can stop the tipflation.

Flagpole is fully back to his old arrogant self now. He backed off a lot after his epic guarantee of a Hillary win back in 2015. Stayed away from the forum for a long time but has slowly upped his presence as though we forgot about that. Ya got any guarantees about the upcoming election, Flagpole?
Then there are certain groups of people that will not tip at all no matter how good or poor the service is. They just don't tip. $140 meal.......zero tip. Simply amazing. The servers know the minute they enter their restaurant that they won't be getting a tip.
Only losers complain about tipping. If you can't afford to tip, then you shouldn't buy that service.
Waiters and waitresses make below minimum wage because they get tipped. IF our tipping situation went away, the meals would be WAY more expensive because they'd have to pay the servers at least minimum wage.
Those of you who complain are just losers and ignorant and cheap.
My guess...is people are aware of tipping wait staff. I think maybe this thread is about tip drift. Every single thing I pick up and the staff did nothing doesn't need a 20% tip. I don't want to tip 2 dollars on my 8 $ smoothie. Pay the darn employees. Im a monster I know. And this tip drift happened precisely during inflation cycle so it kind of hit everyone hard. Liie you pay 15$ for a crappy Jimmy Johns then you add 2 $, when did a bad sub become an 18-20$ ordeal?

Tell me you’re a waiter/waitress without telling me you’re a waiter/waitress.
INCORRECT! Not a waiter. Never been a waiter. Don't need to be a waiter to treat these people with respect and tip them and not complain about it because it is an American tradition.
OF COURSE you would only tip 15%. How old are you? 15% is lame. You need to stay home if you only tip 15% and then cry about it.
More Flaggy nonsense
First of all I make most of my meals, both because they are healthier and cheaper and because I'm invariably disappointed by the food that Im being overcharged for when I go out.
Secondly I find it funny that while you say there is a no tip culture in Europe, they are not us and so we should continue the way we are.
What a backwards sentiment, it makes no sense. People are getting way better food and drinks in exchange for excellent service and they dont need to tip.
I'm pretty certain the vast majority of middle class Americans will be just fine with making this one change to their American lifestyle.
Im not even going to touch America and its ridiculous gun culture...
1) You should continue to make meals at home since you don't have enough money to go to restaurants.
2) I have NEVER said we should continue as we are. I have just pointed out that we tip here because wait staff make less than minimum wage, and as long as that is the case, you should tip and not complain. If you want to change the tipping tradition, you can't just complain about it on the internet (that Al Gore invented), you have to go the government and get them to make a change so that wait staff can't be paid less than minimum wage.
3) Not sure why gun culture came into this, but I agree Americans have a ridiculous gun culture.

1) I haven't taken a break at all. A quick search of my name will prove that to be true. I did cut back on posting on the Dow thread as much as I used to because I reached a level of wealth that has made me not care how the markets do.
2) I was right about the 2016 election because I said Trump would only win if he cheated (or if aliens came down here and made us vote for him). Well, he cheated...on trial for that right now.
3) 2024 election? Biden wins if he is alive and upright.

No. You’re a waiter. Nothing wrong with it. But no one posts so passionately about waiters like you without being a waiter.

If you believe that the food would be "WAY" more expensive, you must be a low tipper. The fundemental problem with the tipping system is that those that tip well need to pick up the slack for the low/no tippers. If the price of a meal just went up to cover the amount that servers make in tips, those of us that actually tip well would end up saving money, because that way no one would be able to cheap out of paying for the service like they can now.
How about we reserve tipping for people who serve us. I will tip my barber after a haircut. Or an LMT after a massage, but I don't tip the receptionist at the front desk. I tip the waitress or waiter but I don't tip the line cook. I don't tip professionals (doctors or dentists). It is really just shared cultural knowledge. It didn't use to be so confusing.
Some people get tips because they have to put up with the customer service side of the business. Some don't. I am okay with that.
It makes sense to tip the barista who hand-crafts my special order Latte... but I am not okay tipping when I buy a bottled water at a Starbucks. That is what I am annoyed by, the tipping when the person doesn't do anything.
