Of course Ato’s comment about Mondo just breaking the world record was, “Good luck to anyone challenging him for a gold medal in Paris.” It’s all about the Olympics for Ato.
Can someone watching live in the US confirm that they are just starting the steeple now? It's 6 minutes in on youtube? Class action lawyers, please contact me for this being falsely presented as live. That delay is crazy.
I wish the sport invested more in better marketing and storytelling to hype up each meet rather than focus so much on the Olympics. Already in this broadcast, there have been multiple mentions of the Olympics and commentary about how this meet is all about getting ready for Paris. The very first shot of the broadcast was the Eiffel Tower, for a meet taking place in China! The 5000 was framed as getting a qualifying time, not an exciting clash of studs. When talking about the hurdles, they referenced a quote from Danielle Williams saying she’s not concerned about how she’s running in April and she’ll be ready for Paris.
Imagine if you’re new to following the sport and this is the first Diamond League meet that you’re watching. What’s the message you’re going to take away? “Guess nothing matters except the Olympics. Maybe I’ll watch something else.” And the cycle continues.
Fully agree. But it's going to be hard to get athletes to pretend that the DL matters as much as the Olympics unless the prize money and other incentives frame it that way - no-one cares if you won Monaco DL and got 8th at the Olympics, but being the Olympic gold medalist and not entering any other meet the entire year increases your opportunities a lot. It's more or less a problem with how the sport is structured to me
That means that the Peacock broadcast will now have ads -- which is a bummer because one of the perks of Peacock used to be that you could watch the meet ad-free.
Yeah but I'll stomach the ads in lieu of not having to listen to Lewis Johnson's rather insipid post race 'interviews'.
Yup. Where does he train Nov - March? Not Stockholm, I assume. Is it Louisiana? Canary Islands? Australia? Surely not like Jen (Stuczynski) Suhr who trained in an abandoned airplane hangar in the snow belt of Rochester, NY??

Yep. Kind of a bummer as I read on this thread that Mondo had set yet another W.R. , 5 minutes before seeing it 'live'

I don't know the date split but he spends half his time training at LSU and the other half in Stockholm

It's all about the Olympics for NBC. / And I found his comment about "there not being a more solid bet for Gold than Mondo" more noteworthy.
60.76 for first 400 of women's 1500. These women know it's a women's race and not men's right? Jesus. And two women are going with it. Ameicans hoping to medal might as well just give up unless these women enter other events in Paris. 2:02.01. 2 women with it.
