Hopefully Monson will return even stronger for Tokyo Worlds next summer, then World XC in Tallahassee four months later. She may have only missed a severe hiding in Paris.
Rehab from this surgery is 8+ months (same surgery Aisha Praught-Leer had). Zero loading on the leg for several months, including complete immobilisation. So she will be lucky to race on the track next summer, let alone qualify for World's.
Ehh if she has an 8 month recovery that would get a 6 month block before USAs next year which is plenty of time. Not sure she will have time to get the 10K standard unless she wants to try and front run it at trials (which i doubt), but the 5K is very much in play.
So, will Schweizer double or go all in on the 10k? She still needs the 5k standard this year...
The heat is an asset for Valby as she runs very well in the heat, doesn't seem phased by it. The hotter it is, the better her chances. Kelati doesn't seem as strong in the heat.
Henes has a tough road. She seems to be working her way back still. I would be more confident in Schweizer or Rogers.
Morgan ran 4:11 tonight (in the rain) in her first race back from surgery. Cranny ran 2:02/ 4:09. Good but not great for her at this time.
Tuohy is injured.
Valby's chances in the 10k look pretty good right now... Maybe even 5k.
Maybe the 5k? She seems like a shoe in behind Cranny, Elle and Schweizer/ Rodger’s
Karissa also mentioned in her post-TEN race interview she would also be racing a 5k prior to the Trials.
After seeing Cranny race a 2:02/800 & 4:09/1500 -- with a 9:48/3200 pacing job in between last night -- cannot say anything at this time if Elise can recapture the fitness she was in at 2023 USAs when she easily won both the 10k and 5k. Can only say the 5k will be her focus at the Trials with a follow-up 1500 possible. Certainly hope someone interviewed at Bryan Clay this weekend to get an update from her on her current training situation.
With the women's 5k coming before the 10k at the Trials/Olympics, the US women's 5k team is currently a pot being stewed. Both Kelati and Schweizer may decide to skip the 5k to focus on the 10k. Presume marathoners D'Amato and Hall and Rogers will do the same. Will Cranny be ready to roll in 2 months time? Tuohy the same?
So -- back to Parker -- she is very close to the Qs in both the 5k and 10k but has a college season to complete first. With elite 10ks few and far between and given her FL commitments, would think her best option to get to Paris would be to find a fast 5k coming up soon to chase the 14:52 Q then run that at the Trials if, indeed, she does break 14:52.
Frankly, it appears we will need to wait until after Pre -- or maybe even the Portland Track Festival two weeks later -- to find out who's in shape, who's racing what at the Trials and who are the odds-on favorites.
Centro's and Alicia's injuries are two very different things. Centro tore the meniscus and either would have had the tear repaired or removed. This is a 3 month recovery.
Alicia has torn the meniscus from the bone. Her surgery involves suturing the meniscus to the tibia through a tunnel drilled through the bone and the sutures attached to a small metal button. She will be on crutches for 4-6 weeks with no weight bearing on that leg. The meniscus needs to reattach itself to the bone which can take from 4-6 months. I had this surgery and started walk running on the alter G at 70% at 4 months post-op. At 6 months I started walk running outside with my first walk run of 5 x 1 minute. It is a very long recovery... This is devastating for her.
Purely anecdotal, but this is the third female runner I know in the past few months with this injury whereas I'd never heard of it before this. The surgery isn't always a success either (one of them had it where the surgery didn't "take" and the meniscus failed to reattach). Wonder if super shoes are at play here?
I think Cranny needs to go for either the 5K or 10K now. She does not need to be duking it out with Hiltz, Wiley, Johnson, Mackay, McGee, et al. Her best option is to go with the longer races.

Good point, the array of "common" injuries seems to have really changed in the last few years. I thought supershoes tend to increase stress more on the lower leg, but it probably depends on the particular runner and shoe combo. The Cloudboom Echo 3 has only been out since last summer, but Alicia would have had access to it before it was public. I'm not sure On had a real supershoe before that.

To add to this, if you tear your meniscus, depending on the location you might either have the tear resected (the trim off the torn portion) or depending on its location, you might have it repaired. The upside to resecting it is you can literally be back running in less than two weeks, the downside is is you can develop damage to the articular cartilage in that joint, so think very early arthritis. Lots of runners can speak to that. It actually kind of bothers me that orthopods talk about this surgery like it’s totally no big deal, for longevity it sure can be.
On the other hand, if the tear is of the sort that it can be repaired (which is much more rare in adults), they suture it together and you’re looking at months of rehab with much of that being non-weight bearing, but the (huge) upside is you keep your cartilage.
I don’t know about how meniscus root surgeries differ, but assume it’s pretty involved. What a bummer for her year.

yes.
That's what she will do.
Then race the 1500 if she wants to, or -- if something goes wrong in the 5k -- needs to.
