Kyle, I commend you and CM for the reach you’re making in the sport. Someone has to do it, and I believe you guys are trying your best.
unfortunately, I really don’t enjoy CM’s content for the most part. Something about it just doesn’t match much of LRC’s similar content—podcasts, interviews, etc. For that reason, I will always refer to LRC’s content. For example, if both have a meet recap podcast, I will always refer to LRC’s instead of CM’s.
People have said CM’s content often feels like everyone is trying to build their own “brand” and that being “friends” with the athletes is put before strong, sometimes difficult journalism. I agree with these opinions. Feels like CM’s podcasts are more about being friends with “person X” instead of asking thoughtful, interesting questions. Usually, the main storylines are beat down endlessly without hardly diving into any deep analysis. More subtle storylines often ignored or cherry picked depending on who is a “friend” of CM. In short, it’s more of a media outlet for the “casual” fan, or the “clueless” fan who doesn’t know anything beyond what they see at CM.
By the way, probably some of my least favorite content of CM’s was Olympics/Worlds recap podcasts where they brought on guests I really didn’t know, but they were frankly kind of annoying and made it difficult to consume.
LRC does not always have the most savvy of media or is the most courteous to athletes, but their podcast is (in my opinion) the best track and field analysis in the world. They know their audience is aware of major storylines and treats them appropriately. They deep dive into topics that we care about. They usually shoot straight with difficult topics in the sport when most others ignore them or try to talk around them. That makes them less liked by athletes I’m sure, but it’s what fans want. That’s why everyone listens even if they don’t care to mention it.
There are some occasions I’ll listen to a CM podcast: they usually have many more guest interview podcasts, so I sometimes listen to one if it’s an athlete I’m interested in. Still, I just don’t find the style of CM’s content to be as compelling as LRC. Some of it does actually make me cringe because of how blatant it gets in trying to be “buddy buddy” with athletes. Kind of weird, honestly.
If you read this Kyle, I hope you don’t take too much offense to this. As a creator in CM, maybe this could help offer a perspective of someone who likes the idea of CM but just doesn’t like the product. God bless.
