It's because Sound Running has intentionally made the event more valuable/viable (outside of the qualifying times). They added prize money as part of this.

Correct. Speaking of Klecker, he's a great example. Just missed qualifying for Worlds last year in the 5000, came back and made it in the 10,000. Good to have two bites at the apple.

In regards to the race this weekend, that's a LOT of guys in one section. It'll be interesting if that affects the race.

Sean Brosnan has plenty of time on his hands. No reason for him not to go.

I see that your post has 7 upvotes and 0 downvotes. But of course your post is ridiculous. You say it is CERTAIN that Nico has no doubt he can break 27. I can tell that most of you never raced at an elite level or even understand human nature. Of course he has doubts.

But what about a guy who has run 7:36(?) and 12:57 recently...?

He is a good runner. What has he done for 10000m? We will see fairly soon what he can do. There is reason to expect an excellent performance, which should mean 27:20ish. Maybe he will surprise with something faster. That is why they run the races.

Klecker made the 10k, then came back and did not qualify for the 5k. Both him and Woody were too gassed while Sean made both teams. Two attempts to make the team still applies.

12:57 doesn't scream to me that he can go sub-27. Klecker ran 12:55 and Kincaid ran 12:51 last year but could only run 27:07 and 27:06 respectively. Marc Scott ran 12:57 at BU but only ran 27:10 a few weeks later. Just based on previous performances, I think Young will run 27:08

Nico will only have 3 Olympics in his track career, mayyyyyybe 4 if he extends into his mid-30's and doesn't move up to the roads by then. I'm glad he's going for it and maximizing his chances.

I think this means he just runs the 5k at NCAA's. He'll also benefit greatly from the regional qualifying system outdoors, where he won't be under pressure to run 13:0x in April or May. He'll have plenty of time to rest, reset, and knock out a regional qualifier.

The standard of 27:00 is pretty intense, I'd guess he has a 50/50 shot, with maybe an 80% chance of breaking the 27:08 collegiate record. I'll predict 26:57 because it's fun.

OTOH, Grant Fisher and Mo Ahmed went 12:53 and 12:56 at BU Valentine in 2022, then ran 26:33 and 26:34 at The Ten a month later.

Also, Marc Scott's 12:57 at BU was a year after he ran a 27:10 at the Ten, not a few weeks before. He didn't run the Ten in 2022 or 2023.

There is a YouTube video released today of NAU's workout this week, Nico's only mini workout of this week. 2 x 2mile @ 4:40 pace. He mentions his body feelings good after NCAA's this past weekend and he's focusing on recovery this week while also keeping his muscles/aerobic system sharp. He mentions he is very confident going into this despite never running a 10K on a track. He thinks he can run the collegiate record, the Olympic standard, and says he thinks sub 27 is definitely possible.

It's a fair point, though I'd say there is a difference between experienced pros, Olympians(!), and a college kid, even if he is very good for his age. I don't rule out sub-27, I just think it's unlikely

Nico's run 12:57, been NCAA xc runner-up at 10k and top ten in 2021/2021/2022/2023, and I think it was in 2022 when he paced his teammates to low 27:40s, and on that occasion, I think that he stayed in for 8k-9k in pacing duties. So, he has a good shot at breaking 27 but as Woody and Klecker saw, you need people willing to take up the pacing after 5000m to get to that.
