are they seriously thinking she can qualify for the olympics at the age of 16, just because she is running 2.58 at 12? you could not be more delusional, there is zero chance that will happen. not saying she can’t be a good runner as an adult and maybe qualify one day, but at 16, it’s just stoopid talk
Agree. A 12-year-old who is going to make the Olympics in the marathon is super skinny. She is not super skinny and if allowed to go through normal puberty, the Olympic marathon is not in her future. Olympic trials, sure. But not the Olympics.
Too bad her Dad doesn't let her excel on her school cross country and track teams, perhaps win some local championships and maybe have a college career if she's so inclined, rather than forcing her into the marathon at age 12.
With all that said, I wonder how many hours per week she's training. My 12 year old daughter spends ~15 hours / week training for gymnastics, as do all her teammates. She does not have the talent to have a real future in the sport. I doubt this 12 year old is running much more than 15 hours per week, so maybe I'm just as crazy as Evan's Dad is. There are tens of thousands of kids practicing 15+ hours per week for various sports at 12, most of whom have no prospect of an Olympic future. Maybe this isn't really different.
