He can’t. It has already been determined to be an unconstitutional use of executive authority, but the Democratic Party’s playbook is to take knowingly unconstitutional actions because it will be a done deal before the Court can rule against it and then say that their opponents are against the Constitution.
While I think the cost of college is ABSURD, and 100% think moving forward that student loan debt = should be eligible to be discharged in bankruptcy, I don't understand how in the world what Biden has done is legal.
The Supreme Court already ruled Biden's previous student loan debt was illegal. Can someone with a law background - not some left or right wing hack - please explain why this version of it might be legal? It just seems to me it's a desperate attempt to bribe young voters.
Congress is supposed to be in charge of the purse. How in the world can Biden do this?

This whole unconstitutional nonsense has got to stop. If the government wants to lower taxes for students so their debts can be paid off then surely they has the power to do that?
Offering something that's good for individuals and will help the economy is not bribery.
If it wasn't for obstructionist Republicans we could have had complete student loan forgiveness AND a wealth tax by now. He's had to do it a little at a time with Executive Orders.

How nice of you to have the general public, including those who chose not to take on debt by going to college, take on the cost of college education for some. Socialism, anyone? Let's all just send our income to Joe, and let him pay our bills.

2) George W. Bush gave out a tax rebate to all Americans leading up to election.
3) Donald Trump broke with tradition and instead of having the signature of the Treasury Department Head on the checks he sent out, he had HIS name...the egotistical Donald J. Trump on those checks. THAT'S the most pandering I've ever seen from a President...I mean, OF COURSE IT IS!
Not a bribe. A very real policy and stance that Biden and many other Democrats (I'm not 100% on board, but I do see some merit) are for.
You're dead wrong on this.

In addition the tax cuts enacted by Trump are not much different. Wealthy now pay considerably less and we wonder why there is a budget deficit. But for sure, many of those same rich who moan and groan about the budget are not offering to pay more taxes voluntarily.

The POTUS (or the Executive Branch) <> "the government"

Trumpers need to sit this one out. Trump is literally telling the Supreme court that he expects them to squash all his criminal cases as payback for getting them appointed. And his parking lot lawyer is doing the same.
Give me a break about pandering for personal benefit.

What do you mean BRIBERY? Giving your constituents benefits for supporting you is kind of how politics work. Do you think corporations support one candidate over another just because the support makes them feel good? No, it’s because one candidate will do more for them (i.e., bribe them, whether through direct incentives, tax cuts, or some other benefit) more than will the other one. So that complaint rings rather hollow.
Whether he can do the bribery in this particular way will be up to the courts, as most things of controversy are.

It's been a while since Republican politics has been anything other than shouting loudly about how they're going to 'punish their enemies'.
Enacting policies that might actually benefit people doesn't really come into the equation.
Is it like trump bribing the wealthy through tax reforms he passed?
While I agree with the sentiment as I feel the country is largely screwed as both parites do bribe their supporters, I think it's important to noe that Trump didn't do anything. THat was a tax law passed by Congress that he signed.
The Founders gave the power of the purse to Congress for a reason. Don't take my word for it, go to the democratic website - democrats-budget.house . gov and you'll see this:
The Constitution gave the power of the purse – the nation’s checkbook – to Congress. The Founders believed that this separation of powers would protect against monarchy and provide an important check on the executive branch.
Congress can offload authority by passing a law, so the fact that Congress generally has the power of the purse isn’t the ultimate answer to the question. What the Supreme Court said last year is that Biden couldn’t order student loan forgiveness under a particular law passed by Congress (the HEROES Act). But that doesn’t mean Biden couldn’t do it under some OTHER act of Congress that gave him the power. His approach here is based on his (alleged) authority to order relief under the Higher Education Act. Whether Biden is right will be question for the courts to answer. But just saying “Congress has the power of the purse” doesn’t rule out Biden having the power to order debt relief.
