I think it's important for everyone that I chime in here. I have no idea why the man was fired. I don't watch hardly any football and even when I used to, I had a very limited understanding of the Xs and Os (particularly at the NFL level). I especially have no insider knowledge of the behind the scenes goings on of the 49ers organization.
Relative to the population doesn’t mean shyt. Are they over represented relative to the racial makeup of the players in the NFL? That answer is no
I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the lack of white cornerbacks in the NFL. Is there a reason other than racism that they are underrepresented? Even when compared to the general makeup of the league itself?
Not sure why you are taking an adversarial tone when we probably agree. There absolutely are terrible coaches, both white and minorities, that get fired too soon and that get to stay too long (particularly at their alma mater).
We have no idea if the coach in question in this thread was fired for racist reasons or not.
My comment was regarding the data for larger trends, which have nothing to do with this coach or that.
I'm not digging to the peer-reviewed papers. You can do that yourself. But here is a sampling of articles that cover it pretty well.
Did you watch SF play this year? They had a defense littered with superstars that vastly underperformed the talent it had. The GB game was an unmitigated disaster defensively and SF barely escaped that game. The Detroit game was not much better. They had a total of 2 sacks in those 2 games. Chase Young was basically invisible.
How about you just deal with a black person who stinks who then gets fired? It also should be noted that his predecessor (who left for Houston in the off season) also was black (it's hard to claim a team is "racist" when they routinely hire minorities) did a marvelous job turning around Houston this year. Too bad SF didn't have him this past year.
Just curious. When in the history of the NFL has a defensive coordinator fired after going to the Superbowl or NFL Championship game, their first year?
Stop for a moment. Does anyone really think that the owners are saying to themselves “definitely fire the black guy. He’s black after all.” I mean, come on. Rich white people are desperate to prove themselves non-racist. I mean the fear of being labeled racist is all consuming. Whatever reason, they fired him, I think it’s very unlikely that race was a factor.

If Coach Steve Wilks takes this to arbitration then federal court, he is not going to argue percentage of people of color, coaches and/or cornerbacks.
What is S Wilks argument?
* 3rd ranked defense in NFL, points allowed.
* S Wilks had a plan to win game in 4th quarter with zero blitz. Legacy Coach Boy Wonder cancelled zero blitz in 4th quarter.
* Through 4 quarters, S Wilks' defense limited Kansas City offensive to 19 points even though a couple of San Francisco fumbles.

Respectfully, I'm not interested in S Wilks, the 49ers, or the NFL. I'm just curious why nobody is crying over the lack of white cornerbacks, NBA players, or famous rappers.
It stands to reason that if the world is suffering because there aren't enough black coaches or golfers, that the opposite should also be problematic. I'm just curious if it is.
Anyway, I was responding to an offshoot of the main thread.
Yes a black man was fired after San Fran didnt win the super bowl. So what? In two of the three years before this - the black defensive coordinators of San Fran were hired as head coaches. In the implication somehow that Shanahan who has hired black men for his last 3 defensive coordinators is racist? Please.
I listen to the 3 and out podcast the host is a big San Fran fan. He thought the defensive was not doing well all year and said today that he'd be fired even if they won the Super Bowl. The reality is Wilks had key players not even playing hard in the Championship Game.
Also the defensive game plan on the last drive of regulation was terrible. He just let Mahomes march down the field. Instead of thinking, If we prevent them from having a fg, we win the game. He thought to himself, "Just don't give up a TD so I don't look bad."
In overtime, he was basically playing the same "prevent" defense. It was so bad the head coach called a timeout to get organized. How often do you see a head coach call a time out to tell the DC to do something else? At that point, Wilks has to be fired for the next year.
If Wilks was some genius or beloved by his star players, he'd never be fired. Clearly he's no D. Ryan.

I love how you abbreviated DeMeco’s first name because you knew you would butcher it, and then you still found a way to get his last name wrong.

Agreed Rojo, which is why I rarely post here anymore. EVERYTHING is labeled racism. 45877 needs the boot, but....you're not going to do that.
That's not how evidence or argument works. You made the accusation; you said "racism is the reason this thing happened." It's on you to show your claim is true, not on everyone else to prove it's false.
Don't have a view on the case, but you are wrong...it is EXACTLY how scientific evidence works. This is not a court of law. He made an hypothesis, so just show him why he is wrong. Simple, find a transgression made, lack of performance etc etc, to show the alternative, otherwise his assumption is very plausible
There are tons of research that show, despite laws against, sub concious bias leads to lower interview rates, lower hire rates and higher dismissal rates of certain races

What kind of anti-black racist hires black men to begin with?
My god people are so stupid. The 49'ers lost, the staff felt that their defensive coordinator was to blame, so the guy got canned. Womp freaking womp.
Quite right, and automatically jumping to "racism" as the explanation any time something happens is a toxic and unhealthy way to look at the world. "Black man fired from elite job most people could never hope to obtain" is not evidence of racism, evidence that the firing was racially motivated is evidence of racism. So OP, bring some evidence or move on.
Give me another possible explanation.
Andy Reid charted the same exact play in last year's SB against the Eagles. How that play was missed by the 49ers DC during the two week film study/game prep was inexcusable.

Your post seems emotion. You do know it is possible to argue wrongful termination without implying or stating racism as motive.
Please name the defense coordinator alive who could have held Andy Reid/Patrick Mahomes to less than 20 points this past Sunday.
I was thinking of Buddy Ryan but he is no longer with us and you pointed out the style of play. On a 3rd down in 4th quarter, S Wilks called zero blitz. Boy Wonder cancelled zero blitz, obviously choosing prevent defense (which you didn't like) over an all out blitz. K Boy Wonder Shanahan would not have allowed Buddy Ryan type blitzing. His son Rex doesn't have his defense blitz as much but Rex would demand as much power as Steve Spagnuolo. K Boy Wonder Shanahan would not be willing to turn over that much control to Rex Ryan. That was it. It is over for K Shanahan. None of his players will believe again that he has a clue. I can see ownership/top management saying to K Shanahan: One of you have to go.
Shanahan didn’t even know the OT rules. But sure, blame to DC.
That was inexcusable not to know the rules. Mahomes and Kelce were laughing at his decision to take the ball 1st in the OT. That effectively gives KC an extra down.
Shanahan was getting lots of criticism for his play calling on offense where he can never hold a lead in the Super Bowl - he is a three-time loser. Passing when SF has the best running back in the league, constantly going 3 and out and keeping SF defense on the field most of the 2nd half and wearing them out. Terrible game and clock management.
As an Atlanta Falcons fan, I’ve seen this all before and I’ll never forget Super Bowl 51. Shanahan did this same exact thing as Atlanta’s OC. Not to mention losing his playbook at a press conference the week before the game. Then he gets rewarded with the HC position at SF.
He was upset about the criticism from this year’s Super Bowl and his well deserved reputation as a choker in the big games and needed a scapegoat. This isn’t about racism at all but rather self-preservation on Shanahan’s part. So he threw Wilks under the bus to take the spotlight off his own failures.
