This thread was started before the race and was entitled, "We may be calling Grant Fisher a World Record Holder by this time next weekend." The race is over. He just missed the AR by running 12:51.84 (AR is 12:51.64) but what made it super impressive is he basically solo'd the whole race as he only had a rabbit for 2k.
He's now the 5th fastest man in history. Here is the top 4
1 12:49.60 Kenenisa Bekele ETH 13.06.82 1 Birmingham 20.02.2004
2 12:50.38 Haile Gebrselassie ETH 18.04.73 1 Birmingham 14.02.1999
3 12:51.48 Daniel Komen KEN 17.05.76 1 Stockholm 19.02.1998
4 12:51.61 William Kincaid USA 21.09.92 1r1 Boston 27.01.2023
What I don't get is teams are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars if not millions on these guys.
Would LRC be willing to do deeper dives into the details of the sport’s economics? What are the athletes getting paid? What type of contracts are out there? Etc. Etc.
Respect for the detail and enthusiasm, like to see positive fans being positive. great post.
but you are going to be so far from correct next weekend, it’s not even funny. He’s leaving it really late and under more difficult circumstances to setup a standard-box-ticking exercise before shutting it down for a few months. but also, doesn’t he have the standard already, or am I out to lunch here.
count this in the realm of all the disappointing not even close WR rumor efforts in the last two years.

The whole standard chasing is wild to me. I guess youd probably need 5k minimum to get a rabbit for the standard and then 10k for a WR rabbit?
Ernst had been rabbiting pretty well but a little too slow today. Either way just get wavelight, I don’t get how that’s not just standard at BU for these standard or record attempts.

I like Grant, but don't the brojos like to shame people who don't participate in USAs/Worlds while being clearly fit? Seems like they always give certain athletes a "pass" on this.

Gault asked him about it pointedly. He said the travel from NYC, and fact that he wouldn’t be doing World Indoors made the decision. Of course that all goes back to the timing of The Ten and such.
Nice PR for Hicks but this pretty much destroys his hopes of competing in the 5k in Paris. 4 Brits with the 5k standard now and he's miles behind them all unfortunately.
The camera work for this race on FloTrack was comically bad. I get that Grant is the main focus but they didn't even bother to show the rest of the field whatsoever, even after Grant had finished they kept the camera on him instead of showing the rest of the field trying to get under the standard.
No. JG is there. I watched about one lap around 2500 and then I guess weldon logged in to flotrack so I got kicked out. I was stunned that a) he was all alone with no rabbit and b) he was so far ahead of everyone else.

Sounds like a guy that has never front ran a 5k. Even indoors the mental aspect is worth a few seconds. And when he ran his PB outdoors he basically sat on Krop the whole way. Likewise Kincaid had Klecker to sit on the whole way too when he ran the AR last year
Cheptegei only had a rabbit for 2400m in his WORLD RECORD 5k. And that was outside with wind as a factor.
Cheptegei only had a rabbit for 5200m in his WORLD RECORD 10k. Also outside with wind as a factor. He ran 4800m solo.

Can’t imagine soloing from 3k out how hard physically and mentally that effort had to be.
Its not like we are talking 14 min and doing that - the guy just soloed 12:51.
Think if he had people with him or pacers going a little further. AR for sure and possibly WR
Has the definition of “soloed” changed? I really cannot keep up with all the changes. I have soloed races before. I led every step. Now if you don’t follow the entire way it is a solo effort? What next?

Irrelevant.
Stated last year his focus is the 10k.
Charlie's 13:09.+ is roughly a 27:20 10k; his pr is 27:40.
Hicks is currently ranked 36th in WA Road to Paris rankings. Andy Butchart (27:36 pr) is ranked 30th. Zakariya Mahamed (27:56 pr) is ranked 37th. Those are the top 3 Brits at this point. Top 27 go to Paris.
So, The TEN, a WA Silver label meet, will pretty much determine if Charlie goes to Paris. Even if he doesn't get under 27, a fast time like 27:20, along with a high placing, could score him enough points to jump into the top-27.
