It’s a little weird and funny that SB always finds a way to get the light to shine on him whenever he can. Like, what is he even doing by being there? Sure, nice to cheer on your former athletes, but there’s multiple photos of him at this point (one on nocontextxctf Instagram too) trying to talk to his former athletes while they are in competition mode. Like, dude, you’re not their coach, be supportive and all but be conscientious that they aren’t there for you.
i thought he had big things coming. Feels more like he wants to relive the glory days
Colin ran 3:53.17 after 4:03, six seconds behind Nico's 3:57 at 7000 ft. How can you possibly believe that Nico Young is not at least a 3:50 miler himself (like Rupp, 3:50/12:58). I would not be at all surprised by 3:48 after that workout and altitude mile, and this validates that.
Okay I normally don’t object to posts with a like/dislike ratio like this, but it just feels so weird people believe so strongly that Nico must be able to break 3:50
first of all, no one is a 3:50 miler until they actually run 3:50. Period.
that said, although he’s in wicked shape, I’m not apt to just assume he could run 3:50 or under right now at BU. I do tend to believe Nico is well adjusted to altitude and that his 3:57 alt mile, while a great performance, is not perfectly equal to its conversion. People will argue Col. Sahl. just ran faster than his time at altitude one week ago, but clearly Colin just had a much better race. Perhaps he does not do as well at altitude. See how subjective these arguments can be?
all that to say, it’s highly subjective and maybe a little naive to just assume Nico is a 3:49 guy right now. Not saying he absolutely can’t, but I’ll believe it when I see it.
Props to Nico for his run today

Third NCAA 5000m record set on the newly refurbished BU track in a matter of weeks.
This. People can argue about shoes etc until the cows come home - but there’s isn’t enough recognition that indoor times (especially from BU) have no bearing on reality outdoors.
How many American 5k athletes - men and women - have PBs from BU that the never come close to outdoors?
Remember it was less than 10 years ago that Galen Rupp, with a silver medal in the 10k, ran 13:0x for the American record on this same track. Now collegians are running just as fast and faster. Only things that have really changed since then? The footwear. Its not just the spikes in races, it's the shoes they train in as well.
Impressive run for the kid nonetheless. That being said, at 0.75 sec./400 m. advantage I mentally add 9 seconds to a modern 5 km time for comparison with older times.

Definitely a better post than yours! Pointing out reasons for uncertainty in either direction is reasonable. Nico has not run it yet, and we are all speculating until he does, eventhough he just beat a 3:53 miler by 6 seconds. You, on the otherhand, have said Nico can't run it, as in you are 100% certain he can't and will never do it, yet you refuse to answer what is the best time he can run, when you have been asked repeatedly. So again, what is the best time you think he is capable or running, given his PB of 3:56.00 last year while in worse shape than now?

I didn’t know I had been asked kid. Well Nico has a lifetime ceiling of roughly 3:52.14 for the mile or of course the 1500m “equivalent.” So take notes and your education has begun. Now this is outdoors. As far as indoors with the crazy fast tracks, maybe the ceiling gets raised to roughly 3:51.88, but usually ceilings are not reached. So don’t expect either one.

BU has always been fast and the new surface had produced exactly 0 facility records. Tracks themselves don’t explain the step change in times. Was UW resurfaced? Arkansas? All seeing rapidly improved times, particularly in the mile and 3k. Shoes are the only variable that withstand any serious degree of scrutiny.
What is it that runners are doing to run so fast these days? I grew up at the end of the EL G era, I’m the same age as Rupp and braking 13min was a huuuuuge deal. Now it’s the expected time to be considered really legit. Are shoes really making that much difference? Is it double threshold? Or is it something more nefarious, some well known secret drug. Seriously what the heck is going on?
I think these times are a ballpark of what I'd expect Nico at different races
(with proper training and practice at off distances ofc): 400 0:51.70 800 1:49.03 1000 2:18.58 1500 3:34.15 1-mile 3:50.88 3000 7:30.0 2-mile 8:05.08 5000 12:57.0 10000 27:08.19 HM 60:06.18
Nico can definitely run a sub 50 400 lmao and he can hit 1:48 for an 8
idk maybe the altitude conversion makes sense, but I just think he is more gifted at the longer stuff still. Who gets 4th at XC as a true freshman? The 3:30 1500m guy or the 27:08 guy

Brosnan is obviously close with the the Young family. He’s also apparently close with MIke Smith. I was at the meet tonight and Mike was talking with Brosnan very often. This was Mike approaching Brosnan. I know because I was standing next to Brosnan for a portion of the night. He was also talking with a very well known agent during the meet. It’s not a crime to talk to athletes, coaches and agents during a track meet. It’s actually very common and very normal.
I’ve also heard about Brosnan starting a pro group or being involved with a group. This is something I heard from people in the running world. If this is true and a group is happening this fall, expect to see Brosnan talking with more people at big meets this year. The brojo’s said we was in DC last week at some ex runners birthday bash. They also said on their podcast the party was who’s who in running. Maybe Brosnan is the Kevin Bacon of running. Regardless he’s allowed to be at track meets and talk to people.
He will break 3:50 just as Craig Mottram and Dave Moorcroft did before him. Neither of them had extraordinary speed. Look them up. Nico is only 21. When it's all said-and-done, he will run sub-12:45, sub-26:30 and sub-3:50 by the end of his career - and probably sooner than anyone expects.
Do you think Adriaan Wildshutt can break 3:50? Could Ritz have at the time he ran 12:56?
No I don’t … neither can nor did.
After seeing Nico’s workout on YouTube, I knew right away he was in sub-13 shape. And I was not at all surprised by last night’s performance; however, I wouldn’t have thought this before his 2K workout. I will say this again, it doesn’t matter that Nico lacks a pure miler’s kick. Even Steve Scott lacked a true kick if you compare him to a Seb Coe or others from that era. Remember, he’s still just 21 years old. He is doing things now that are making most of re-evaluate the kind of runner he really is … stay tuned. :)
