STOP BEING SO SOFT LETSRUN
I hear this, I really do. But then there's this thing we do where we trash American marathoners for not running fast when they usually just run Boston/NYC every year, which start later in the day/have some hills/can have bad weather. We're lining up all of our best marathoners on a flat course & someone will need to run 2:08 to unlock a 3rd spot for the men. It feels braindead for USATF to start this at 10am with a 60-70 degree spread instead of something like a 6:30am start where it would start in the 40s & not get above 55. It's not about being soft if you are going to recognize that Americans place well at American majors, and at the World Champs/Olympics. Just don't get how starting this at 10, & having the same people tune in who would watch earlier, is good for the athletes, who might be more attractive to sponsors with faster PBs. 60-70 & a low dew point will be fine. But they're going to run a little slower. The marathon isn't about being tougher when it gets over 60 -- it's about being smarter (i.e. being ok with running slower/dialing into something a little slower than what you prepared for).
