If so I do remember you being quite vocal about *not* wanting PED testing for top ranked runners in a certain email thread. Now why would that be?

meat, ketones and zero drop shoes. I can't remember which makes Jeff run faster in his mid forties after being a mid packer in his 30's. Still seems to be running very well in his 50's with more muscle and less body fat. plus, his income relies on coaching, sponsorship and social media. can't imagine why he'd be against testing.
He wasn’t a mid packer in his entire 30s. By mid 30s he was already placing well at events but his prime started in 40s. Sure there are other examples of runners running really well in 40s but still suspicious. Ludovic and Javier still run well so it’s possible but certain things about Bronco make me suspicious.
No one cares about PED use, Sage. Absolutely zero. There is no significant prize money and no data to support any PED use would help in the mountains. It’s you vs the terrain. I never cared about a soul at Chamonix. Just me.

Trail running is more and more going the direction of triathlon, where the largest share of the competitors are middle-aged with a large amount of disposable income to spend on races/equipment/travel. This is the ideal demographic for advertisers and I suspect that there is good sponsorship money to be made if you are a top competitor.
who the f--- cares. ultra running is in the same column as womens basketball, womens soccer and the paralympics. We'll watch it when there is absolutely nothing else on.

If UTMB wants elites, I'm sure they can pay a few appearance fees to get top runners other than Zach and Kilian and everything will be fine.
They actually made it harder for elites to race UTMB, by removing their old method of allowing the top 50 (I think that's the number) ITRA point runners to bypass the lottery, making them have to get UTMB/IM stones, as well as having to enter the lottery (unless they were top 3 in a "by UTMB" race). That change was one of the negative comments that Corrine made about the new org.
All the UTMB changes were made to force runners to have to run "buy UTMB" races before getting into UTMB, it has nothing to do with the actual quality of the competition. The more money you spend at their races, the better your chances of getting into UTMB.
What I'm wondering is, when will they split the UTMB, and have the women run in France and the men run in Hawaii?
An email from well-known ultra athlete Kilian Jornet, which is co-signed by ultra athlete Zach Miller, to over one hundred of the worlds' top mountain runners has been leaked on Instagram by British coach Martin Cox (@VO2maxCoaching). The letter is asking athletes to boycott UTMB and attend a 'different race'. No context is given for the planned boycott but they are clearly unhappy with UTMB for some reason.
The context is that the UTMB organization recently torpedoed a Gary Robbins race in Canada in a not very nice manner (in his view; UTMB, of course, professes to have done nothing wrong). Quite a few folks took offense to that, including Corrine Malcolm, who has been fairly outspoken about problems she sees in the sport. In response, UTMB promptly removed her as a host of their live coverage, which was a completely dunderheaded move because she's great at what she does. It's kind of steamrolled from there.
She wasn't an employee,she had a verbal contract to commentate on a few races a year,that's all.
If they employed her all year round it's different.Listen to her when she commentates,no bad words at all.
When she isn't employed she is entitled to an opinion.
Yeah, no one has ever had their career penalized because of off-the-job behavior. Like, never has anyone lost a job for a personal tweet or anything.

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that the ski area torpedoed that race? You can fault the ski area's choice, that they choose a big money organization—much like themselves, over a smaller one. I agree it's a bad trend and it's a result of something that UTMB has created, but it's indirect. UTMB is just making itself more attractive to the corporates that run ski areas and other race organizations that want in on the UTMB carnival.

s a runner it is so easy to find nice mom and pop ultra trail races in the US. There are so many of them and they cost a lot less too.
until, UTMB and Ironman take them over and shut them down..
but as you note this is much harder to do than with triathlon, at least in the US West where there are still public lands. So the Ironman business model, creating a monopoly then gouging the athletes, is not likely to work here. Luckily.
