Sub 15 was plausible last year, and there were a of pros in the race attempting it and pacers. What other race over indoors should she do? BU Valentine? It's all the same set up. Cranny ran 14:31 in a similar set up at Valentine, lapping runners. The chase pack was doing like 15 flat and slower.
Also, no one really does a 'rust buster' 5k during indoors... They try to get a qualifier and PR, and then run it again at conference and / or nationals, and fill in with 3k, dmr, mile etc...
The entire reason this meet is so popular is because it is fast.
I can’t read the rest of your post without correcting the bolded stupidity. Go watch the race again! The pacers were way to slow for a sub-15 race. They would have been in the way for anyone that wanted to run sub-15!! It’s basic track, man.
It was supposed to be paced for 15 last year at Tuohy's request because she wanted to try for sub 15, (and probably some other pros too), but Jones fell off the pace. It did not matter in the end because Tuohy did not have it and could not keep up once Coburn fell off. Someone could definitely get 15 flat at the BU opener or faster with the right pacing. I am not sure what is hard to understand about that. The elite field has a say in the pacing, it is pretty basic. It is a similar set up to other top meets at BU throughout the indoor season (like the one where Valby ran 8:49 last year ... another paced BU race with pros)
As Gator said, most college kids will run hard at this meet and then take their post XC break after, since they are fit. It is a very popular strategy and most 3k/5k qualifiers come from this meet now.
Markezich ran a nifty 8:50 at this meet last year, and after becoming a 9:17 steepler and her showing at XC Nats I think she could steal the headline if the two golden children don’t show.
Markezich should go 8:40's. Pretty exciting. For all the Valby / Tuohy talk I am excited to see Lemnegole, Markezich, Maatoug and some others battle the 3k

I’m really excited for Sydney Thorvaldson. Markezich, Maatoug, Lemnegole already well known studs (I know Lemngole is new to the NCAA scene but pacing a DL and road 14:40 is insane), while Thorvaldson has been good but her recent 11th place finish at NCAA XC after 113th last year has me thinking she could make massive improvements.
The race will have two pacers. One for the pros and another for the collegians. The slower pace will be for 36 second laps. If they run, both Tuohy and Valby will break 15 by a second or two.

“with the right pacing”
^That is the problem. As stated earlier in the thread, for a sub-15 min race:
(1) they would need two pacers to start, the second one that remains would need to absolutely hit 3600m in 10:45, before they stepped off the track.
(2) it would need to be a small field, and/or the entry standard would need to be lowered, in order to eliminate runners getting lapped.
Both conditions are required to go sub-15, and I doubt either of them can or will be met.

If the pro pacers were trying to set up a sub-15 race last year, then they miserably failed. They weren’t even close.
I think it was said on the broadcast they were pacing for 15:00-15:10; so if it’s the case where pacers are going to go out there and half-ass it, then forget it, because a sub-15 ain’t happening.
Sorry to be so blunt, but the clock is unforgiving.

Last year the target at 3000 was 9:03 and they were 9:06. Still within reach of 15:00.
Last year the target at 3000 was 9:03 and they were 9:06.
A sub-15 was over, right there.
It got progressively worse when the second pacer went through 3600m at 10:56. There has to be room for them to string out, which is why the pacer needs to go through 3600m in 10:45 (instead of 10:48.)
Valby has the engine. Give them 2-3 months to prepare the kinetic chain. Then put her in the right race, and the old collegiate record will (Lord willing) be history.

Usually the pacers don't stick past 3k.
9:03 can get you to sub 15 if you have a strong close... 5k often has negative splits. Cranny and Debues-Stafford went through in 8:57 (14:55 pace) and ended up running 14:31.... Depends on your close.
Watch all races from the meet here: https://flosports.link/3rMvLAWBowerman Track Club's Gabriela Debues-Stafford ran 14:31.38 followed by Elise Cranny in 14:...

This “kinetic chain” talk of yours is meaningless babble.

Why the anger? If you don’t understand, just ask, and I’ll explain it to you.
Exactly, good luck on your last collegiate race, Tuohy. 👍
Well since she evidently won’t be running this race as a collegiate, maybe she can be hired to correctly pace-set the race to a sub-15 for the collegiates. 👍
It’s collegiates we are talking about, so a sub-15 would be on the razor’s edge PB for any of them; the fastest way to pace a race on the razor’s edge would be to try and even-split it.
Really have no idea. Tuohy was ill, and supposedly in the best shape ever otherwise.
They could both go sub 15. Or run 15:10.
Based on XC results only, Valby could run 14:55 and Tuohy run could 15:10.
None of this would be surprising.
For everyone who watched the previous days presser…
Did KT look, act or sound sick in any shape or form to be honestly sick ..?!
She obviously did not look terribly ill the day before, but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t proceeding into illness. I think one source stated it was Henes that said she woke up the day of the race with the illness.
