EVERYONE is affected by this: the transgender movement is an attack on reality.
If we must accept someone's self-identification regarding sex, must we also accept someone's self-identification regarding criminal guilt, qualifications for employment, quality of schoolwork, performance at work, satisfaction of a contract, etc.?
nobody told you that. you're just making things up.
No I have read it on this very board. For months leftists kept yelling at all of us that this wasn’t a problem, that we are making too big deal out of it. now, of course, the problem is beginning to metastasize, and it will become more difficult, if not impossible to solve.
But that is what leftists do. Create problems that are intractable, in which the only solutions are extremely painful or expensive. Then they can blame the handful of responsible, sane people left who have to clean up their messes.
And in a few decades many of these same leftists will be calling for reparations of those harmed by transitioning.
The Ts may be voted off the LGBT island: Martina Navratilova, one of the most conspicuous lesbian athletes, opposes males competing against females, though certainly Megan Rapinoe votes to keep them. And certainly the Ts have aroused the opposition of feminists (who are perhaps on another island) such as J. K Rowling.
Labels, like “leftist,” are the weapon of the witless.
Well, "progressive" would be misleading as many so-called "progressive" stances strike me and many others as regressive or harmful, and you've proffered no alternative, smartypants. And there you go, equating speech with violence. Typical leftist.
“Woke” means nothing, or it means whatever the Humpty Dumpty presumptuous political hack wishes it to mean. It’s another one size fits all guttural utterance that witless politicos use as a limp cudgel to pummel those whom they disagree with.
You're wrong. People recognize "woke" because it violates the fundamental assumptions of liberal political philosophy--that we don't give people special rights and privilages due to immutable characteristics.
In a technical sense, "woke" is a combination of the critical theories of The Frankfurt School and postmodern theory. Both groups of theorists were disenchanted with the fact that Marxist revolutions hadn't yet occurred in the places Marx predicted they would. The Frankfurt School started taking aim at culture on the grounds that it duped people into accepting the status quo and prevented them from developing the class consciousness Marx thought that they would. The postmodernists rejected grand narratives such as religion, capitalism, and even communism and argued against objectivivity and value-free truth claims. When Critical Race Theory was developed, it's founders said, explicitly, that they were drawing on critical theory to anchor postmodern thought and make it politically actionable. Critical Race Theory is at the forefront of the culture wars for this very reason. It is a woke belief butting up against political liberalism.
There is clearly a link between the suddenly-popular "woke" belief that the distinction between males and females is meaningless, that those who believe in the existence of the sex binary are hateful, privileged bigots, and quotes such as the following from queer theorist, Judith Butler:
If the immutable character of sex is contested, perhaps this construct called 'sex' is as culturally constructed as gender; indeed, perhaps it was always already gender, with the consequence that the distinction between sex and gender turns out to be no distinction at all."
Scientists didn't come up with this stuff. We didn't suddenly discover new things about human existence. Instead, critical and postmodern theories have been sweeping through academia (the training ground for nearly all knowledge-makers) and popular culture, convincing people that Enlightenment principles are oppressive.
People don't have to be able to idenitfy these principles in obscure literature to understand that they're confronting a specific ideology that is in conflict with their most cherished principles.
Other names for woke include: illiberal leftism, The Successor Ideology (Wesley Yang), and Critical Social Justice (Pluckrose & Lindsay). When applied to gender, we might call it Meat Lego Gnosticism (Mary Harrington).
I don’t understand. Liberals told me this rarely happens, that it’s a non-issue, and that people only bring it up because they are bigots. They told me this isn’t a real problem and I should stop complaining.
“Liberals told me…”? I see this kind of attribution fairly frequently, and I wonder how it originates. It seems sort of evasive, if not passive aggressive to me, and I’m probably not a liberal. What’s wrong with just saying your piece and leaving it out there without some sideways bit of labelling? I never had Conservatives or Liberals “tell me” anything. Thankfully.
I have no idea about the philosophies of some but there was/is a common response of "this is rare so don't concern yourself about it". School shootings are pretty rare too. Should we not concern ourselves with them? Plane crashes are really, really rare too.
Don't forget this is a minor we are talking about here, so better watch what you're saying.
You've come to the wrong site. This is LetsRun, where the owners are "proud to host public court records/police information and make no apologies for it as all minors names are redacted (even though everyone knows the names)"
If they are public records, then they are fair game. Every newspaper will run things like that. For all the complaints about this site, that is one that to me is defensible.
I can't believe that no one has gone to the Maine Principal's Association on this. The athletic director of the Maine Coast Waldorf school is clearly comfortable with facilitating this cheating BS. I blame the administration, not the kid. Time to get the MPA involved and end this nonsense before this kid wins states.
First place by over two minutes, racing a few of the most prestigious/wealthy schools in Maine, all full of families that can certainly afford the legal battle if they felt like stepping up for their girls.
If the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association bans transgender athletes, the one currently running can obtain a court injunction. Rich parents, or not, I don’t think a judge will support a transgender ban.
That is a matter of debate. This is not settled law by any stretch. A few cases that have gone to court have largely been dismissed as the kids left HS. A lot would depend on the judge.
Yes, but true. 10 years back people would say “it happens so rarely that we’ll just let it slide”. Well, flash forward to now and every single NCAA sport has had at least one transgender all-american.
The inflows are huge and increasing with the growing LGBTQ population. The problem will continue if not addressed.
The worst part is, is that this idiotic issue creates a rift around transgenderism that doesn’t need to be there at all. I support transgenders in literally every facet of life except in XX sport, and I don’t give a sh*t about bathrooms either or teens going back and forth on their identity. But putting your head in the sand to the unfair advantages in sport it stupid, unless you want to see two all-male podiums.
Name the transgender All American in football, baseball, basketball, hockey, track, field hockey, lacrosse, etc.
This is a topic a lot of people are afraid to speak up on. Look at the abuse heaped on famous people like Martina Navratilova for speaking out or JK Rowling. Part of the issue is the silencing of critics. Creating an environment where dissent is not responded to with discourse but threats is chilling.

Nancy Hogshead is a leading voice in this area as well and she has been a prominent Title IX advocate since, well since forever!
There is clearly a link between the suddenly-popular "woke" belief that the distinction between males and females is meaningless, that those who believe in the existence of the sex binary are hateful, privileged bigots,
They might be “hateful, privileged bigots” or not, but they sure are deficited in analytical reasoning ability, which in your case, is probably because you have been insufficiently trained in math and science, as is clear from the insufferable social sciencey crock you post.
So here, have at it: as one of the more ardent insisters of the non-strictly-binary nature of sex around here, let me grant momentarily that sex is binary and is determined by whether your body is designed to produce eggs or sperm (and let ovotesticular DSDs go to hell for now). Nothing at all changes about the rest of my views on trans or intersex in sport or bathrooms or in society.

Everything in society is based on assessing the risk of something and the cost of reducing that risk further. Until school shooting started happening with an alarming frequency since the late nineties, we didn’t concern ourselves with it.
As for this kid, it’s high school and as far as we know, everyone operated by the existing rules (that might well need revisiting). The context I recall the “so rare” comment in is something like the possibility of a Kiptum suddenly declaring himself female and shattering women’s road records left and right. That simply can not happen in elite running because the current rules make it impossible for transwomen to be competitive in elite sport.

Martina ignorantly predicted a wave of guys that would fake being female for a for a few years, win a pile of money and return to being a male. JK focused on transgenderism and not sports. No one asked for her opinion and if she couldn’t stand the heat, she should have stayed out of the kitchen.

This Martina Navratilova? The one who said, in 2019:
“I think we need to include as many transgender athletes as possible within elite sports. Look, society has changed so much. Things evolve, things change and maybe I need to evolve, I need to change.
