Kargil and Mcleodganj are two places with enough foreigners that the locals have stopped doing double takes when they see one. Also, accessible trails too.
Lots of pollution (air and trash) and pushy vendors and be aware of scams. It also smells in many places. Beautiful nature if you can get out of cities. There will also be lots of friendly people too. Delicious food but worth it to be careful with what you're consuming. Delhi belly can ruin a week of your trip. I hear there are wonderful places in India but depends on where you go. Massive country. It's polluted everywhere except deep nature which I personally find very sad.

Most comments are depressing here. Obviously most have not been to India. This is one of the most fascinating countries on the planet to visit. Don't let any of these dumb comments discourage anybody to go there.
The scenery in India isn’t anything special. Spend a bit more and go somewhere more civilized.
Not many go for Indian's "scenery". Everybody comes for the thousands of years of culture. Not that I expect you to know what that might be.
Well several people here mentioned scenery so perhaps you should catch up before posting. And even the culture leaves a lot to be desired unless you enjoy witnessing the still very much alive caste system they cultivated over thousands of years. Or maybe you are talking about the culture of public corruption that is a joy to view.
maybe you should actually go to India before posting about it. If you want actual culture go to Europe or Latin America.
Those here defending India clearly have not been there. They just can’t stand the idea that people would speak critically on another country. It’s considered a 3rd world country for a reason. If you can’t point out the flaws in a country then you are the problem.
OP, I will say again you should strongly consider going somewhere else. For the times I have gone to India I have never seen a white woman jogging in running clothes on the streets. There is a reason for this.
As always, lets run does not disappoint in being the worst place on the internet.
This thread is much more of a human cesspool than India is.
My sister lived in India for 5 years, i have spend multiple months there, it's by far my favorite place I have ever traveled, it's fascinating. Enjoy !
Yeah imagine a place where two women could be dragged through the street and gang raped. Am I talking about Europe in 1865? USA in 1920? Oh no, it's India 2023. Let's run is the cesspit? OP please go for a running holiday in Spain or something instead
I enjoyed a couple weeks in India in the course of a trip through Asia thirty years ago. I stayed a few days in New Delhi. There were elephants in the streets, which was cool. I saw my first fast food restaurants in 2+ years, Wimpy's--Chicken burgers, not hamburgers. The food was good. I followed advice not to accept offers of tea from people or businesses because you might wake up with a headache and your possessions stolen. I travelled by 3rd or 4th class train--no worries--to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. I walked to and from the train station to it. The Taj is fantastic early as the sun is rising and late as the sun is setting. The only drawback was that I had annoying rikshaw drivers going alongside me the whole time trying to get me to pay for a ride. I flew to Ladakh in the Jammu-Kashmir province in the mountains. There was a curfew at night. The city of Leh-Ladakh is an old Tibetan city with flat stone roofs and a great temple. I started on a solo trek through the mountains but eventually the trail vanished into a dry creekbed as I got up near the top of the first mountain so I walked back in the dark to the road and caught a bus back to Ladakh. There was a major earthquake in the country while I was there. The flight back was overfull and so I had to wait a second day and go through a crush to try to get a seat on the next flight. I didn't see a lot of drawbacks and now the country is far wealthier and has much better infrastructure. You may doubt that but the country's economy has been growing 5-10% per year since the early 1990s. Per capita income has risen to at least $2k per annum. They built a whole new metro system in New Delhi.
India's crime rate is far lower than the U.S. That includes murder (just over half the U.S. per capita rate) and rape. Now, rape may be higher than reported but it is a fraction of the reported U.S. total.
If you're in a developing country, you have to understand that people will want to get your money in various ways, so be prepared to say no, to bargain seriously, and to walk away, to keep an eye on your stuff, and to pay attention to where you are. Don't bring valuable things. That being said, this comes with the territory of exploring new cultures. The prize is that it is really cool to see these things and meet people from different places, as opposed to, say, sitting on your tail in your air-conditioned house in your gated community and SUV looking down at other cultures. Going to Asia was one of the coolest things I have done in my entire life.
