I think that this puts a different spin on some of what we were talking about in the "All Oly champions race the 1500: who wins?" thread.
Jakob, as fast as he is, doesn't have sub-1:43 800m speed, and his acceleration is less instantaneous than El G or Coe, he has ot wind the speed up from further out to get to top end speed, and he's vulnerable. Wightman and Kerr both kicked past him. I think taht, in the imaginary 1500 race, that Coe and El G would and could do the same thing to him.
Interesting that Wightman thinks that Jakob doesn't really respect his competitors. I can understand that, to be an elite athlete you have to have a sense of confidence bordering on arrogance sometimes to succeed, but I think that it shows the current Diamond League set up with all pacemakers, all the time, take away the racing aspect. And we've talked about this before, many, many times on this site, that today's runners seem to be time trial specialists who can run very, very fast, but often misjudge not-rabbited championship races leading to the favorites failing to bring home the expected gold. Jakob doesn't like being in races where he can't dictate (via pacemakers) the set-up, and it shows in todays slightly odd racing from the front tactics.
Still a great race, great win by Kerr.
