I wish this would happen! Mine has been stuck at 59 +/- 1 for over a year. Good times, bad times, weeks off from injury, no change. Most race estimators put me more in the 52-54 range.
For 17 5k and slower, 30 miles a week is enough. You need to become more efficient and mileage will increase on its own as you get faster (assuming you are running for time and not some arbitrary amount of mileage). Hobbyjoggers get addicted to mileage and long runs.
30 miles is enough for what? For a 17 minute 5k runner, that is probably not even 4 hours per week.
Lets not start confusing 17 minute runners with 22-24 minute runners.
lol. I run a 17 5K and usually run 3 hours 50 to 4 hours 10 each week.
I could do 22 minutes on about 7 miles or an hour each week.
My race and workouts total about 50 minutes. Everything else is jogging.
Just don't be surprised when Garmin predicts an unrealistic race time, tells you that your heat acclimation is moving backward after you spend 70 minutes running in 95-degree heat (this happened to me yesterday), or lowers your VO2 max estimate the day after you destroy a 10-mile tempo run and receive a "Nice job!" workout summary from your watch.
Completely fair, with both Garmin and Strava you have to get a feel for which numbers to trust and what you can scrap. I trust Garmin's pace and heart rate data fully, their sleep / HRV / body battery data somewhat, and their predicted race time / VO2max numbers not one bit.
