It doesn't make sense for schools to teach things that are true?
I learned about the African slave trade, indentured servitude, history of slavery, the types of work slaves did while in school. I graduated high school almost a decade ago. Can you explain to me how I was harmed by this racist education?
Because it's true, it must be included? We don't teach every extraneous and self-evident fact in every subject (do I really need to sat that?). It isn't relevant, it was added at the state's insistence.
You didn't take an AP African American studies class in high school, so what you learned in history class doesn't really have bearing on why a governor affirmatively decided to intervene on the granular aspects of a specific high school class.
Fact that slaves were able to use skills learned during slavery after abolition is pretty relevant because it paints a coherent picture of what happened to slaves post-abolition. You don't think it's "relevant" because you erroneously believe that people are using that fact to somehow invalidate moral claims against slavery. You're projecting YOUR desire to revise history to meet political ends.
Also, it's the Florida Board of Education who oversees the DOE to make these decisions, not Desantis.

I live in Florida. DeSantis wields total control over the executive branch, of which the DOE is a part.
It’s not relevant because it doesn’t need to be said. Just as it doesn’t need to be said that spaces were housed or fed. The world has co structure knowledge of that fact. Combine the fact that it’s self evident with the fact that DeSantis mandated a change to existing curriculum and then put it in the coo on text of DeSantis’s anti-woke platform. Look at all of that with an open mind. Then tell me that you think this was simply an effort to make the curriculum more comprehensive. Or maybe just continue to pick only parts of the conversation to mischaracterize and then attempt to answer with the kind of misdirection that everyone here recognizes for what it is.

I am looking at it all with an open mind. I'm not the one who is losing their mind over a singe line in a 216 page document. Let's take a look at how
I fail to see how a curriculum which includes how African Americans contributed to the revolutionary war effort,
SS.68.AA.1.6 Examine the service and sacrifice of African patriots during the Revolutionary Era (e.g., Crispus Attucks, Peter Salem, James Armistead Lafayette, 1st Rhode Island Regiment).
contributed to the civil war effort
SS.68.AA.2.7 Examine how the status of slaves, those who had escaped slavery and free blacks affected their contributions to the Civil War effort.
made notable inventions
SS.K.AA.1.1 Recognize African American inventors and explorers (i.e., Lonnie Johnson [inventor], Mae C. Jemison, George Washington Carver).
recognizes African American artists
SS.1.AA.1.1 Identify African American artists (i.e., Aretha Franklin, Charles White [Abraham Lincoln portrait], James Earl Jones, Maya Angelou).
as well as famous AA politician
SS.2.AA.1.1 Identify African Americans who demonstrated civic service (i.e., Secretary of State Colin Powell, Civil Air Patrol [CAP] Lt. Willa Beatrice Brown, Carter G. Woodson, Senator Hiram Revels).
and teaches about AA folk lore
SS.2.AA.1.2 Identify oral traditions and folktales of African Americans (e.g., Anansi the Spider, Tale of the Midnight Goat Thief).
among many other teachings about AA history, are all the workings of a racist tyrant whose goal is to brainwash students into believing slavery wasn't that bad.
"Benchmark Clarifications: Clarification 1: Instruction includes how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit." This helps paint a cohesive picture of how freed slaves adapted post-abolition. Nothing more, nothing less.
Anyone know if there are chapters describing how black Africans raided villages, kidnapped the occupants (men, women, and children), put them in chains and transported them to the coast where they were sold at a profit to white slave traders?
Anyone? Anyone at all?
Look at the downvotes!
Seems like there are posters that would like to erase history! Do they only want certain things to be taught and erase the rest? You know, like they say Florida is doing.
Also, will the African countries that enslaved their brothers be contributing to the repartation movement? If not, then why?

LOL
They only want to teach the parts that make white people look bad. In reality, history is a little more complicated than "white people bad, everybody else good."
The new standards require instruction for middle school students to include “how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit”. I would say this is unbelievable but it’s not. DeSantis is an unapologetic stone cold racist…makes no attempt to hide. Seems he sits up late at night thinking of new ways to piss off Black people.
This is similar to saying although starving Jews in Aushwitz was bad….in some instances, it helped with obesity.
Ridiculous
I remember the good ole days when we were taught AMERICAN history. Not white history. Not black history. Not hispanic history. But AMERICAN history.

Western Hemisphere schools have only included elements of western hemisphere slavery for hundreds of years which allow for the comfort of majority populations in Western Hemisphere countries.
You are very concerned about, as you seem to imply, teaching the good parts of western hemisphere slavery.
Please list African American history and/or African American literature college courses you have successfully completed.

When you talk about racism, you get to set a benchmark. If African Americans are suppressed in a systematic way, what about free Africans living in their own nations? Do they live better lives? Why and why not?

Start your own thread. Type about three well developed paragraphs and I may read what you have to say. You are changing the subject.
He's not wrong. They probably learned more working those fields than they did running around Africa with spears.
The real winners are the descendants of the slaves. They like to complain about their ancestors but the reality is they're enslavement made a much better life for the current generation. Would you rather be an Africa fighting another civil war or here in America We could be anything you want to be even president?

That's totally insulting -- you know it -- you're just trolling fool, you lil keyboard warrior
46% of people of color voted for DeSantis including 19% of black men.
Many African Americans voted for L.B.J., 1964 election. L. B.J. was a criminal and a racist. An African American vote for a racist doesn't alter a candidate's status as a racist.
It's interesting that there is social media and articles on the internet that proclaim that LBJ was a hero to Black people and you say he was a criminal and a racist. I am white and I think that many politicians would say things that they know are wrong just to gain some votes. Even Abraham Lincoln has been accused of that.
Was LBJ a racist? I think he thought like a lot of other people thought in those days, including some black people. All of those people would be thought as racist or wrong now.

Exactly. When one is wallowing in a false victimhood narrative and are able to blame it for all short-comings and failures in life, being told the truth isn’t a comfortable thing to hear at all. It means it’s maybe ‘them’ and not some dastardly system out to get them.
By the way, all schools should be teaching about how White Europeans by their millions were kidnapped and enslaved by North Africans from all along the coast of Europe - and it wasn’t so long ago either. You can still see to this day some collection boxes in churches in England, put there to try to ransom back the villagers from the evil African slavers. The cruelty was beyond belief too. It was only stopped by the *American* navy sometime in the mid 1700s. It was called the ‘Barbary slave trade’. Go look it up people..
The truth is we’re all descendants of victims and abusers. No one has any special claim on slavery/related victimhood based on melanin, unless they directly suffered slavery themselves. And there are more people today living in slavery than ever were when it was abolished in the West. It just happens to be a very uncomfortable truth that slavery still exists in massive numbers in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. And it is black enslaving black etc. TODAY. Not hundreds of years ago. But not in white dominated countries.
Whilst you’re at it, go look up the origins of the the word ‘slave’. It comes from ‘Slav’ (as in ‘Slavic’ - and very white people of Eastern Europe).

Not really unbelievable. Pretty standard modern right wing stuff: If it owns the libs, it's good!
Libs (in the leftist sense and not referring to classical values) are self-owning and step in their own poop repeatedly. They have supported race- and sex-based so-called "Affirmative Action" pitting races against each other and the two sexes against each other. They are the ones supporting the gender insanity that puts males in what should be female-only locker rooms, bathrooms, sports competitions and prisons and that put unreality into reality. They are the ones that abandoned their traditional support of the weakest and least defended in supporting direct abortion (unlike indirect abortion which results in the unintended death of the unborn human being after treatment, say, e.g., ectopic pregnancy or uterine cancer), insisting that it is "safe" though its raison d'etre is to deliberately kill an innocent human being, and that surgical direct abortion weakens the woman's cervix and leads to premature birth in subsequent pregnancies.
I don't have to rationalize anything. Slavery can be bad, but slaves could have been able to use the skills learned working on plantations for employment in post-abolition. These two things can be true at once.
If you have any black friends, which I somehow doubt, why don’t you discuss your beliefs and feelings about this and see how they feel. If you don’t have any black friends and are in a waiting room waiting for a car repair, in a doctor’s office, or whatever, strike up a conversation with a black personality and casually work your views into your discussion.
I dare you.
Ok, ever try to start a conversation with a black guy in a waiting room for car repair.
yo, wasup bro, them some nice Jordans, did you get them for yo Birfday?
He/it is one of the most racist people on this forum, a total loser dbag. You can't be serious.
Not racist, I just don't think it's a good idea to start revising history and science to conform to our political beliefs.
Would you be ok with an intervention that said molested kids gained early sexual experience during the molestation period, which they could later benefit from?

Nice conversations.
ok, i'm banned
The reason you have no black friends is because you actually think this is how all black conversations go.
Are you the person who stated "You believe you a proving why you do not need African American Studies courses. Of course you are demonstrating why White & Asian people would benefit the most from African American Studies courses."?
