That Hiltz associates with Quigley reflects very poorly on them. Quigley is old enough to know better, she is years removed from giggling in the back of chem lab about the TA accent. But these middling runners/content creators/influencers are so thirsty and catty that they little should be surprising. Why would she insinuate unfoundedly about a 18-19 year old? Pathetic. I laughed listening to any previews believing Quigley was going to show up to the starting line.
For everyone who thinks that we should go soft on someone who is probably cheating
You’re assuming she’s cheating, which I don’t. Her association with the Johnsons is effectively the happenstance result of her being born in Huntington and being a talented runner—it’s not like she sought out their coaching for pharmaceutical assistance. Is it too great a coincidence that she’s as good as she is to be believable without drugs? Maybe, but I’m not going to condemn her based on anything we know. I have no problem with someone being skeptical or personally convinced she’s doping or has doped, but given everything involved in her situation since she was 16 I don’t think it’s right to tear her to shreds on the internet.
To the “omertà is for famiglia” guy—the fact that she refused to cooperate in the sexual abusecase isn’t sound indication that she’s protecting herself or her own doping ring, as you seem to suggest. If you read the police report on the sexual abuse case you would understand how she might not want to put Nick Johnson in prison, because she had been groomed, she was in fact very close with the Johnsons, and even if she disapproved of Nick’s manipulation she still wouldn’t have wanted to put Lauren’s husband away. As a 16/17 year old, I’m sure she also felt like she was wholly responsible for her part in the matter as far as conspiring to take a secret trip to Oregon, etc. Again, this was relating to the sexual abuse charges, and had nothing to do with doping allegations.
Hypothetically, if she was given PEDs at age 16-17 but is not taking them now (let’s say since high school graduation) and has no intention of taking them again, I would give her a pass because of her age and the complexity of her situation. Of course, a lifetime ban from SafeSport for Nick and Lauren would be in order.

If you dope and you get caught you should serve a ban regardless of age.
She's not going to jail, it is not a criminal offense. Cheating is unfair to competitiors and so if she does get caught she should serve a ban from competitive running.
I doubt too many bright eyed and bushy tailed runners go into pro running thinking they'll dope. But its the coaches who convince them it's the right path to take. I think it is very plausible that the coaches Addy was close to, who have a record of using EPO and testosterone, may have coaxed her to try the same.

I never suggested she would go to jail or that it was a criminal offense.
If she gets caught doping I 100% agree she should be banned. But if it surfaced that Nick Johnson was massaging her with testosterone cream 2-3 years ago I don’t know how that would be handled or if it would be punishable; and in my opinion we, the court of public opinion, should cut her some slack if that’s the case since she was a 16 year old being sexually manipulated.
If she’s found to be doping now then throw the book at her for all I care. I’m just not gonna assume she’s guilty and trash her name based on anything we know.
I like reading his stuff when he isn't being a condescending preacher. But I can't see how he could get results, he seems to soft to be a successful coach.
I know Jackie Areson was good for a 2 year period, no good before or after 🤔
Steve Magness conference XC finishes while head distance coach at Houston:
2014: Men - 3rd; Women - 6th
2015: Men - 3rd; Women - 9th
2016: Men - 8th; Women - 9th
2017: Men - 6th; Women - 10th
2018: Men - 9th; Women - 7th
2019: Men - 11th; Women - 8th
Those aren't great finishes, but they aren't horrible either. A lot is relative to the strength of the conference and how difficult it is to get top tier athletes into a school. Cal Berkley is never going to get the same athletes as Oregon for example and finishing top 8 in the Big 12 would be top-3 in some other conferences.
It sucks that the #1 most successful distance teen in the U.S is also a product of the #1 most blatantly shady and cheating coach in the U.S. It is also unfortunate how that athlete dipped out on a full-ride to the prestigious CU XCTF team to stay being coached by the #1 most suspicious coach in a league that doesn’t drug test.
Who is Quigley to accuse somebody else of cheating? She cheated her way into a contract with LuluLemon without disclosing her severe, career debilitating injuries that have prevented her from racing, pretty much for the past 4 years. She likes to present herself as some social Justice warrior but she’s a self serving narcissist
Sexual relationship with coach while still a minor (documented in sexual abuse police report); clandestine "recruiting" trip to Oregon with the coach while still a minor (same police report), admittedly lying to police when questioned about it (same police report) ... BUT she draws the line at stuff the coach is allegedly injecting into his "elite" runners that will make her run faster? Hmmm. Not sure about that.

Who is this minor? Do you have any proof of who it is? I have read the entire police report and there are no names given. Pretty serious allegations about a minor that are impossible to prove.

From accounts I've read from caught dopers in cycling, XC skiing, and so on, almost all the athletes said this. They all intended to compete clean but came to think they could only compete, or remain in the sport long-term, if they doped. Whether one takes the idea of "dope or find another career" as a dark pessimistic truth about these sports, or that it is not true and just something athletes tell themselves, I can't answer, but every account I've read seems to suggest exactly what you've written.

Hmmm I wonder what highschooler in Huntington at that time had…
1. Direct connection to the Johnsons and Curtis Hines
2. Was the best runner on the track team (and one of the top athletes in the country)
3. Has a family situation that just so happens to align with someone we know
4. Attends the same church as the Johnsons
5. is good enough to justify “collegiate visits” to prestigious D1 universities
Yup you’re right. These are all just crazy coincidences. The person could be anyone!
What's the point of this. We could start insinuating that quigs dropped out to avoid suspicion from competing and with her old teams history and it wouldn't be completely baseless. If Wiley fails a test cool otherwise she needs to shut up and run some track races. It also seems like every pro is linked to someone in the doping arena too so it's not that hard of a stretch to start letting the weak accusations fly
Name which distance athletes at USAs worked with coaches *confirmed* in either court docs/police records to have been in possession of EPO and testosterone? It's not as long a list as you'd like to make out.
It's amazing watching people try shrug off serious and valid questions as "pft who hasn't been coached by someone whose wife admitted they have a stash of banned PEDs?"
It's interesting that 90% of the comments here are either ad hominem against Quigley/Magness or are what aboutism. I don't like Magness and Quigley either, but I don't need to like them or be a Saint, it just matters that they are right that it's a very suspicious situation.
"whataboutism" is often not a logical fallacy, but rather a terrific way to interrogate a belief system. For a concrete example, if a claim is "X implies Y", then testing specific cases of x \in X ("what about x?") to see if Y follows might be a great approach-- after all, if we can find a case where Y doesn't follow, then the original claim must be off. In a way, "whataboutism", as many people incorrectly use it, is the anti-fallacy because it demands logical consistency.

Next time she’s interviewed, which journalist will have the cajones to ask the hard question?
Quigley also criticized CU Alumni that spoke out in support of the CU program, for not retracting their statements of support. Where was Quigley's retraction of support when Shelby's ban was upheld? Why weren't Bowerman athletes criticized?
Writing this NOT for the message board trolls, but for the decent people who are curious enough to be reading these threads and might not know otherwise...
Steve Magness is an AUTHOR. He is far from a "grifty influencer" or whatever else you want to call him. He realized he was more interested (and more talented) at researching coaching and performance than actually coaching or competing himself. Steve has said talked about his role at NOP happening because Salazar was looking for someone young and naive to manipulate into playing along with his dirty games. If anything, Magness deserves a massive kudos for overcoming the abuse tactics of Salazar (the threats, the withheld pay checks, the inconsistent praise and rewards) and deciding to step away from what should've been his dream job. Remember that he was only 24 when he took that position.
As for his current gig, most of you writing on this message board could hold a candle to what he has to offer as far as research insights into coaching and high performance. He routinely tweets and posts things that come from his research and book writing as any author with half a brain would do to advertise their work. Grifty influencers use half baked pseudoscience to claim their steroid-filled bodies are the result of "avoiding seed oils and taking cold plunges".
Just pick up his book on Amazon for like 15$ and do some of your own work to learning more about his story before just bashing on someone shamelessly. I also HIGHLY recommend listening to this interview. Everyone is free to believe what they may about his side of the NOP story, but still he gives a very compelling narrative for his experience and I'd bet solid money none of these message board trolls would have the moral fiber to respond better than Magness did.
Rich Roll talks with writer & coach Steve Magness about unlocking true mental toughness, leading others to optimal performance, & working with Alberto Salaza...
Then since he is an author or whatever....I mean if Jill can be called a doctor and Hunter an artist I suppose we can call Steve an author.....
It shouldn't impact him at all to take his safesport ban for his drug use and never be able to coach again, right? Or would his lifetime ban come from his multiple inappropriate coach/athelte relationships?
