BTW this is the course that runs very fast and one can see why as the centerline is probably in the equivilent of lane 3 or 4 on a track, and there are 6-7 big turns on the 5K course so if you run the tangents you can really cut the distance. And maybe 1 hill of any significance.
I was going to post "early on Doris seems to have gone to the UF school of tangent running!" but ads kept poppong up! 16:12 looked like she was just cruising along

Coetzee (Auburn) 2022 - 6th in 1642.8 2023 - 2nd in 16:43.7
Machan (Alabama) 2022 - 9th in 16:56.3 2023 - 15th in 17:12.5
Porterfield (Auburn) 2022 - 13th in 17:01.1 2023 - 10th in 16:58.9
Olemomoi (Alabama) 2022 - 2nd in 16:30.1
Lemngole (Alabama) 2023 - 1st in 16:12.1 (won by 31 seconds)
Just a brief look at a few Alabama and Auburn runners makes it look like the conditions were suited to similar times. Lemngole ran 18 seconds faster than Olemomoi did and she had nobody near her the second half of the race. Olemomoi was in a battle for 1st last year. Impressive performance, especially considering she seemed to have no idea where the course turned and was constantly far off the tangent line. At one point the announcer even stated something like, "I don't know if the three runners on the far left side of the course realize that they are about to make a right turn." Seeing her run for the first time today and how easy she made that race look tells me that Valby and Tuohy are going to have to run their absolute best in November if they want to stay within five seconds of Lemngole.
RunningLane will provide the live stream/commentary and will start around 7:15 AM Central on Friday, September 15th, 2023. This meet is hosted by JAX State U...
We will see. The college season can be interesting. The second and third place runners were well off the pace at the SEC and Regionals last year. If this is the Runninglane course, then a 16:12 is good but not great, but it depends on how the race was run. High school runners have broken 16 on this course. Did not watch either the 2022 race or this one, so cannot speak to tactics.

Valby cruised 19:17 on the 6K version of this course in Regional last year. And Hutchins did break 16 but ran tangents better.
Yikes. I thought Olemomoi might consider entering the portal since there will be nobody left to train with her after two high profile transfers and one graduation, but I guess I'm wrong.
She could be a serious threat for the NCAA XC individual title in the fall. Valby is going to need to bring her "A" game.
Just watched it. Like I said it is very early and Alabama's new freshman (lol, sorry) is a clear contender. But she was pushing it and the conditions were good. I would have expected a sub 16 or low 16s on that course. Cook ran 16:03 her senior year also. But again, very early in the season.
High school runners have broken 16 on this course.
And Hutchins did break 16 but ran tangents better.
ONE high school runner barely dipped under 16 on this course when running the fastest CC time ever for a high schooler.
And yes, Hutchins ran the tangents much better than Lemngole. Screenshots from the exact same point on the course. Hutchins on the line, Lemngole on the other side of the blue center line. She ran nearly the entire race away from the tangents.
Runninglane is not a very technical course and it was designed with gradual turns, so the tangents are not super important.
The blue line, which I assume is the measured lenghth has to be the equivilent of 3-4 lanes out from the tangents, and there are 6-7 turns on the 5K course. That could be 50-75 m, no? But maybe the blue line is not where they measured it?
Runninglane is one of the more discussed courses out there. There is not a sharp turn on the entire course and a lot of long straights. The architect of the course said it was designed to be fast. Maybe it would be interesting to compare it to Valby's 5K regionals split.
Nothing about this race really tells us too much, other than what we already know, which is that Lemingole will be a top contender. Last year's North Alabama winner on the same course would have been 12 seconds back, but that was a more sit and kick style race with a pack of five together at the 3.2K mark, and the Kentucky runner closed the final 1.8k faster. Then again, maybe this was a warm up run and she completely outclasses the field from here on in. Makes for drama.
