He truth is those schools don’t have commitment to American athletes that much anymore. Fans want to see athletes rise up as Americans and later run for America.
Provincial and/or nationalistic American fans want to see that, sure.
No you didn't unless it was 40 years ago. I have been in the business for a long time and I can tell you that in today's world, a typical 2:18/5:00/11:00/19:00 girl gets no scholarship anywhere and is lucky if a Power 5 allows her to walk-on. There are some here who seem to think that worse programs give larger scholarships to slower runners. That isn't how it works. There are tens of thousands of high school runners looking for scholarships and roster spots but there are only thousands of those. Supply and demand has a way of leveling things out.
Didn't see anyone mention 2:18/5:00/11:00.. (no one cares about XC times when recruiting).
The coach in question said sub 5... no offers... had to walk on...
Sorry, I'm with 'It is time" on this one. I could name 5 schools in my area alone who would give a sub 5 athlete some money... a sub 5 athlete, assuming it wasn't done as a freshman and is now running 5:15... can get some scholarship help and doesn't have to walk on at 'big name' university.
I’m with them… a sub 5 girl can get a scholarship from lots of schools… there are 360+ d1 schools I coach at an ok mid major (top 3rd of d1 xc teams) and I offer sub 5 women lots of money and that is true with most schools in my conference and every school would respond to them and love to have them on the team (like was mentioned earlier if she is not a 5 min freshman/5.15 senior). Also almost any d2 school would offer them tons of money.
One thing that college coaches don’t like is high schools that run tons of miles with super type A coaches… there are some instances where I would actually offer a 5.10 girl from a nowhere school where her soccer coach also coaches track much more money than a 4.55 girl on some every year nxn team.
What are the top programs that buy foreign athletes to have success or get podium spots in cross country:
A few that come to mind are:
New Mexico
Alabama ( University of Florida is the new Alabama)
In Alabama’s defense (at least on the women’s side), the foreign recruiting started when Tribble was still coach. But back then the team was running pretty uncompetitive times. When the Palmers took over, foreign recruiting was definitely still a thing though the US based runners started knocking out some competitive paces again. It will be interesting to see how the team reacts to new coaching.
If I remember correctly, Tribble is now the head coach at CBU. Almost the entire women’s team is made of foreign recruits, but they are producing solid results. Take that as you will.
Nothing against it, but in recent years, Campbell University in NC had an entire Kenyan lineup. They were always one guy away from making a splash on the National stage.
Just so that you are aware Campbell had foreigners in 1986 with Canadian Ken Frenette so some things never change. University of Richmond had Paul Ereng, George Mason had Abdi Bile....having foreign runners isn't new.
This topic has come up many times over the past 2-3 years. Many parents and coaches have listed multiple conferences and teams where their athletes attempted contact Nad did not receive a response or was offered no scholarship. Then we get a handful of fake coaches saying they would give them a scholarship. Funny that the coaches never provide the name of the school. If true that they give scholarships to 5 minute girls and they provide the name of the school, they would immediately have a bunch of faster girls contact them. Imagine if a bunch of posters state they buy a particular shoe for $150 and they list all of the retailers. Another poster claims to run a website where he sells the shoes for $125 but when asked for the site, he won't provide it. Sure thing sparky.

Nope. We don't give you our information because you people who lie about your kids are major red flags.
Stop making up stories about all of your "fast kids" who get zero response. It's just flat out not true. You have multiple coaches saying they would have responded to the kid so either you're lying or you failed to guide your kid correctly. Just stop it.

I wouldn't dare say which school I coach at because you're so full of it but here's this years recruiting class for us and their scholarships. I'm at a D1 school which is easily in the top 25% of the NCAA (we had a good amount of scholarship come back from graduation this year and all of these girls have significant academic aid to help the costs)
2:16/5:01/10:55/18:28 (45%)
2:19/5:02/10:49/18:18 (50%)
58/2:18/5:11/19:18 (10%)
2:12/4:54/11:11/17:54 (65%)
2:14/4:56/10:57/17:46 (75%)
This will undoubtedly open me up to criticism by somebody so I'll say this: No, we're pretty good. This is how we always spend. I'm good at developing athletes and spending this much money this year isn't going to hurt our long term success because this is what I've always done when the right kids come along. I'm sure Letsrun will pretend to pick it apart without knowing any more information lol.
Huh? You don't give out your school name? Is it in the former soviet union? No coach has posted the name of any school that will give a scholarship to a 5 minute runner. There are hundreds of girls at that level who would bombard any coach who woukd provide a scholarship. Yet no name is provided. None exist.
Actually most good coaches also develop partial scholarship and non scholarship athletes. We can’t say that for Mr Palmer at Florida. He’s been Breaking NCAA rules with old Kenyas. That is nothing to be proud of.
Very curious why this is allowed to be posted about Palmer, I’ve never heard anything about this in coaching circles (source: I’m a D1 distance coach with athletes at the national level). However, when I’ve seen posts about the very well-known NCAA investigation into NCAA Brosnan’s illegal recruiting at UCLA involving messaging athletes not on the transfer portal to get them to run for him, those get deleted within the hour. Let’s see how long this one stays up…
How long does an investigation usually take? Been hearing about this for quite a while.

I'm only listing the recruits near a 5 flat mile. That's all the information you need for this argument about a fake 5 minute miler with no opportunities.
Coach Now - you seem to be suggesting that these coaches should be giving their money to your girls... because you think they should? A quick TFRRS search shows that 48 women in D3 ran sub-5 in indoor this year. Perhaps your athletes aren't entitled to as much attention and money as you think they are.
Screw it. Ok. But only because I'm not sure if you're genuinely interested in learning or if you're mounting a counter-argument for something.
I'm going to fudge the tenths/hundredth a bit because it might be too easy to look them up. For the sprints and jumps it's a different situation. We have some really great upper classmen and didn't need to "reload" quite as aggressively as we did on the distance side. These kids are also on a bit of academic aid so take these numbers with a grain of salt. Everyone is on varying levels of need-based aid and other scholarships. A couple were given a little more than I would have liked because they had other offers and I really liked them. No throwers this year. We have a larger group of throwers and didn't want to add until 2024.
12.06/25.1 (35%)
14.6h/5'9/46.9h (60%)
14.34h/12.11/5.69m (25%) - Her plan is multis/hurdles

Something to think about also: a 5 flat mile is worth a lot more depending on the state they come from. I could see a 5:00 miler in California being a dime a dozen, but they'd still have the opportunity to get scholarship if they chose to. According to coach now there are literally 100s of kids with no scholarships waiting to beat down the door of any school who offers a dime lol
