Sharing slippers is gross. The purpose of a floor is to get dirty. The thought that a floor needs to be kept clean at all costs seems weird to me. You sweep and vacuum when needed.

Im stunned by the upvotes and down votes. First post gets 19 ups, 0 downs. This one 10 ups and 40 down. Is this a self selecting thread where the people who approve of mandatnig you take your shoes off come to this thread or do most people really approve of it.
Wouldn't have someone walk around in your house in sweaty socks be even more hygenic if its the summer and super hot like it is now?
You are correct Rojo. It’s like a religion with these shoe stranglers. They’ll stop at nothing to get our shoes off so they feel in control. We’re in the camp with you. Keep your shoes on. Getting down to your socks is intimate and only for family/partners.
I haven't worn shoes in my house since I was a little kid. To me it is so normal. It also makes it easy as my Asian wife has never worn shoes in her house. Lived in Asia for many years. When we moved back to the US when my kids were in high school, they thought it was really weird that their friends didn't take off their shoes before going into their homes.

Do you mean wouldn't having someone walk around in your house in sweaty socks be even more unhygienic?
And if your feet get sweaty from wearing socks when it's hot maybe you shouldn't wear them.

Would you walk barefoot on human feces, roaches or vomit? If so, we can all agree you are a gross human and dismiss every argument from you henceforth.
If not, how do you not understand someone stepping in those things with their shoes outside then smearing it all over your floors when walking in?
I can only assume that you walk around your house with your shoes on. But someone that wants to walk around in their own house barefoot probably doesn't want their feet turning black because of others
So I should have taken my shoes off even when the people living in the house were wearing shoes?
Wearing shoes inside is just like wearing sunglasses inside, there is no purpose being served. But at least sunglasses don’t track grime around the premises or scuff up the floors. If I went inside a house and everyone else was wearing sunglasses, I would still refrain from doing so indoors. Same with shoes. Can you explain, is it a safety issue, more comfortable for you to have shoes on, or something else? I’m genuinely curious what would induce someone to wear shoes inside a house.
This topic really amazes me. Why do I wear shoes inside a house? It's what I've always done, what my parents and grandparents did, what everyone I've ever known does. It would never have occurred to me to not wear shoes in a house. Yes, it is more comfortable for me to wear shoes and I don't need to bother with taking them on and off if I leave the house. But honestly, and this why I keep looking at this thread, this is the first time I've ever heard of people who don't.
I don't want to have to ask you to remove your shoes. But I appreciate if a guest shows their host some common courtesy by asking me if I would like them to take their shoes off before just barging in.
It's so abnormal to take your shoes off in the world I've lived in that when I, and really everyone I know, go into someone's house it is never something I'd think of especially if the people who live in the house are wearing shoes, which has always been the case in my experience except in some very unusual circumstances. If you'd like me to take off my shoes but don't ask me to you've got only yourself to blame. I'm not a mind reader.
No one expects you to be a mind reader - that's why you ask. I would say about half of the people I know in CA where I live take their shoes off, especially those with young kids crawling around on the floor. Most kids are required to remove their shoes in the house. I grew up in a house in the middle of the country where no one thought to take their shoes off. When I got older I realized that wearing shoes in the house was gross and uncomfortable.
I lived in SE Asia for a number of years and no one wears shoes in the house and no one wears socks anywhere, unless they are working out or something. People sometimes have inside "sleepers" (which I call sandals or thongs) they wear only in the house, but barefoot is the common practice.
I guess if the thread has got this far, noone has explained to the science-hating indoor-shoe savages in the ins and outs of what's "gross." So here goes.
- your feet are one of your body's main radiators. Little fat, lots of distributed blood vessels. - feet sweat to enhance this ability, as do hands - sweat works by evaporating. The change of state from liquid to gas cools the surface the liquid touches. - sweat on feet with shoes on does not evaporate very fast, if at all. - sweat that doesn't evaporate is eventually eaten by microbes - the microbes that eat the sweat produce stinky chemicals - socks attempt to mitigate this by absorbing the sweat - socks without shoes don't have to absorb much as the sweat goes through them - bare feet don't retain sweat at all or get stinky - if your feet stink, you probably are used to it and don't know. But everyone else does.
Now for the big insult, Americans are afraid to go barefoot because they have subconscious fetishes. Watch them vo-test too much about it, but they know it's true.

change your socks every day and your shoes will still eventually stink! Wash and disinfect them. Don't bring them in someone's clean house you slob!

If wearing shoes is nore comfortable than not wearing them why don't you wear them to bed - or maybe you do? And then you don't have to take them on and off to sleep.
Isn't that the rationale you are using for wearing them in the house?

Really? I’m kind of shocked. I also grew up wearing shoes inside the house. Now as a middle-aged adult, I’ve had so many friends remove their shoes when entering homes (none of whom are Asian), that I eventually adopted it as well. It really does keep the place cleaner and nicer, much easier to clean. I feel as though it is the new standard here. Granted, I live in NYC so our city streets are filthier than a street in the suburbs.
I saw a mouse! (Where?) There on the stair! (Where on the stair?) Right there! A little mouse with clogs on Well I declare! Going clip-clippety-clop on the stair Oh yeah!
hats off to the 'murican who thinks he leads the pack by having been in 6 countries outside the us. mind you he probably counts canada, ,mexico, and hawaii.
the other three are likely the uk.
Actually turns out to be seven countries where I've been in homes and maybe fourteen more where I haven't. Mexico is not on the list. I have been in people's homes in Hawaii, but Hawaii as a country? How did you come up with that? And how does the UK count as "the other three?"
i find your ignorance and xenophobia alarming.
but other people have found the time to try to explain it to you.
i am impressed you have worked out that Hawaii is not an independent country, maybe i underestimated you.
are you sure you havent been to mexico? maybe you are a mexican living in california in denial?
I have a short leg, so I wear shoes all day, otherwise I'd be walking around like the leaning tower of Pisa.
Also, I go in and out of the house a lot. That would get really annoying taking them off and putting them on all the time. Does no one else leave their house?
Also, if you have PF you're supposed to never go barefoot. I don't know if that's for real, but that would be another reason to wear shoes inside.
Which leg is short? And is there a part of the leg that is shorter or the whole leg proportionally?
I come in and out of the house a lot. It takes me a few seconds to put them on. It's a habit. How old are you?

Not sure if it's so much about subconscious fetishes. Most Americans are raised to believe we are exceptional. Whenever we stumble upon something that exposes our ignorance, instead of doing a self assessment most of us will double down because freedumb. Self absorbed + ignorant.. you do the math.

Don't be a tit about it. He means that he needs a shoe to be able to walk level.
