UCLA XC new documentary - “The Rise”

I ran distance for UCLA and used to live in LA. It ABSOLUTELY is a great place for distance runners. Every kid in the state of California has them in their top 4 schools. What you're saying is just plain false.

It’s funny that when someone is disliked by a large group of people, instead of thinking maybe the feelings are justified and he’s easy to dislike, it’s the large group that somehow has the problem.

I can’t see how anyone would dare pushback on today’s internet tribal mob culture where whole groups hate on a person without knowing them at all, the context of their situation, or virtually anything at all except the mob determination. Social media has been great in this regard.

To be fair, he was apparently making cold brew coffee, which I didn't realize until he made the comment about letting it sit for 24 hours. It sounds like he took someone's advice to not over grind the coffee, and if they were taking into account his blade grinder I bet they'd have told him there would be some whole beans left.

Still a strange thing to include, and the fact that it is cold brew makes it strange that he was starting it early in the morning. One of the big perks of cold brew is that you don't have to worry about making it early in the morning!!

I bet Brosnan is reading this thread, and whatever else he takes from it, I'm sure he will go out and buy a better coffee grinder.

I agree with you that outside of running UCLA is highly sought after. I think a lot of top runners expect a scholarship like most other schools offer them. For some reason UCLA has a reputation of offering “books only” that’s nothing compared to tuition and housing offered at almost all other schools-again, talking about women who are top tier recruits.

UCLA should be very easy to recruit. It's the most applied to school in the country, has resources that cannot be beat, good training weather, and a great sporting history. They were very good in cross country when Bob Larsen was cross coach, and when Coach Larsen became head coach they had one of the greatest ever all around track teams. UCLA's cultural sports history may be the best in the NCAA- and I generally dislike anything to do with the west coast.

The height of hubris. He'll grow up quickly, he just needs to eat some humble pie. Coaching reality is about to smack this joker straight between the eyes.

UCLA is exceptionally attractive to high schoolers for whatever reason. My daughter has it first on her list without even knowing much about it. It wasn't nearly that popular a few decades back. It has a great tradition in the sprints and field events. Basketball made it famous. There are great trails not far from there. They would not be the only great distance program where they have to drive to do most of their runs. At UNM, they drive down to the Bosque or up to the Sandia Mtns for most of their runs, for instance. The reason the distance program has been moribund is that they don't put the scholarships into the program and you're not going to get the top recruits unless you first recruit your administrators to give you carte blanche to get anyone you want, in scholarships and admissions, as well as NIL now. So, if Brosnan wants to set any higher or more specific goals than a podium some time, he'll have to get the power and the freedom to get the athletes he wants. Right now, he is starting to get the female recruits he needs and he has shown he can take a 4+ college miler down to 3:55 in a year. It's a start. He has a long way to go. I don't doubt that he can recruit if given the resources. He has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he can build a great program. The hs results say a lot about the college potential. His hs results were better than many D1 program results, and with 15-18 year olds from the area, except for Seymour.

This guy's life is incredible.

He lives on the beach making a good salary and only has to watch over a couple of hours of practice a day. It's not like he's a football coach in meetings four hours or watching reel after reel of film.

He's obviously a good coach, but lucked out with two great runner families at NP and parlayed that into a high profile coaching gig on the coast. Bravo

Literally no CA HS distance runner with two legs a brain and the internet would ever list Cal as a top choice. You're input is disqualified from being taken seriously for the duration of the thread after this post.
