Courtney’s time today was 9.44% from Jim’s record. I haven’t a clue on the other courses, but it seems like the level of the females in the trail running world are finally up to par with the men (when compared to other the gaps in the other events like you said)
Courtney is an outlier so you can't really say the gap is coming down
Genuinely curious: How fast do you think Courtney could run a 5k on a track all out right now (ok...not right this second, but like at this point in her career)...
Love it when the road runners say rhis performance isn't impressive since you know, she was "only" doing 9 minutes miles on trails.
Of course they conveniently leave out the fact that there is more elevation gain in the first 4.5 miles of Western States than in every World Marathon Major combined.
That's right, you could take all the elevation of the 6 "Biggest" marathons and still not have the over 2,500 feet of up that Western has in the first 4.5 miles.

15:29:35 FTW at Western States 100. 6th overall. Destroyed the course record by 1 hour 18 minutes. Great weather conditions enabled this, but it’s nonetheless stunning.
When I was a good runner I would not run the marathon. Heck, I avoided the 10K. How is this an event that helps distance running?
Well in sports, the sexes are 9-10% different a...
Some people would rather ruin women's sports than admit there is a 9-10% difference in physical ability (when scaled up to the size of the whole population).
I told you up thread you did your math wrong, it's more like 11+% average or 9% to 15% difference across common events - which strengthens your point. I keep a spreadsheet that I update whenever there's a new WR. Here you go:
100 9.5% math is ((10.49/9.58)-1)*100=
200 11.2%
400 10.6%
800 12.2%
1500 11.2%
mile 13.1%
3000st 10.7%
3000 10.3%
5000 11.9%
10000 10.8%
5K 14.7%
10K 12.6%
half marathon 9.3%
marathon 10.7%
The difference is even greater in jumping and throwing events...up to 30% or so.
A way to convey the10% figure: the average differential of groups of top men v. top women is 2.6 miles over a marathon.

100%. the sport is SO lucky to have a representative like her. Very rarely is the top athlete also the best personality in the sport. Obviously different in mountain ability than Kilian, but both are revered in a similar way in the trail world. Really nice to see how Courtney is loved in Europe
It's incredible how narrow the gap is between the best men and women in the ultras. You don't exactly see this in the sprints.
I would love to know exactly why. Of course there are several theories about this.
Congratulations to Courtney.
I'm sure you have several credible theories ..
Courtney's time is utterly sensational but it's still just under 10% off Walmsley's CR so probably this is her getting that women's record closer to that level and that the old record wasn't as stout as the mens.
Just watched the Irunfar post-race interview with her. She is a fantastic interview. Very few American marathoners (men or women) are this engaging and have the personality she does and shows.

I believe she was a skier in college, so there’s no record to draw from. However, Camille Herron ran a 240 marathon at age 29.
I would put the over/under for Courtney at 17 min.
Whoever said Gidey can't win this race is delusional. Are you serious? She is also capable of eating a sandwich while jogging 9 minute pace. Don't kid yourselves.
What we're watching now is mostly white people with the means to pay for their own crew and travel to these events. If there was enough prize money on the line, things would get much more interesting. If African athletes were able to justify coming out to these races for free and had the leisure time during the day to train, they would CRUSH all of these fools. How many Ethiopians have run a marathon in all 7 continents? I'm guessing none, because that's a rich person thing.
These are just a bunch of instagram influencers/private coaches who love the attention. That's why they hire a crew whose job is to literally follow them around in an RV and answer their every call.
I believe it was confirmed Walmsley received a 200k bonus from Hoka for his CR at WSER. You guys are hung up on 'no prize money' meanwhile these sponsorships are paying quite well as trail running is becoming hugely popular and you guys are living under a rock.

According to her wiki page she was a 4-time state nordic skiing champion in HS and went to U of Denver (top-3 program) on a XC skiing scholarship. So she already had a deep endurance base when she started running ultras. But that doesn't necessarily translate into speed on the track.
Gwen Jorgensen ran 15:08 in her mid-30s after switching over over from tri, but that was after a few years of specific training as an elite runner. My guess for Courtney would be around 16:30 for a 5K.

Good to know but most very good trail runners don't earn much and one injury will stop even that. I always lough when somebody says this is a trail running professional. They just get a pair of shoes and a bunch of trucker hats for the most part.
