You would think that the sub has some kind of pinging device, like airplanes have on their black boxes so that the black boxes can be found even on the bottom of the ocean.
I think that finding the sub isn't the biggest problem. It's rescuing the people inside. Does anyone know if they usually bring a second deep sea sub on the ship as a backup?

Pretty scary thought to be trapped at the bottom of the ocean with dwindling oxygen, assuming that's what happened to them. I would never want to get in this thing in the first place.

We are told it is more dangerous driving to airport than danger of flight. Commercial airline passengers deserve navies attempting to rescue when a commercial airline goes missing over water. Many on Titanic were poor people wanting to move to NYC seeking employment. By 1912, watercraft had crossed Atlantic Ocean for hundreds of years. Titanic passengers were not reckless.

Absolutely. I don't think I'm particularly subject to claustrophobia and I wouldn't have a problem getting into that submersible if it were only in a few feet of water like in the submarine ride at Disneyland (does that still exist?). But two miles deep in the ocean--NFW.

Some of the people posting on this thread are the equivalent of the Point/Counterpoint guy who says, 'They bought their tickets...they knew what they were getting into - I say - LET 'EM CRASH!'. The people on this sub were engaging in high-risk, reckless behavior, but for God's sake, these are human beings with families who even now, aren't sure if their loved ones are dead or alive with dwindling oxygen. Maybe - just maybe - the time to make jokes about their impending and tragic demise should follow the adage that comedy = tragedy + time. I've got a dark sense of humor, too, but man, there's a time and place for it.

Agree with TMOX above. These are human souls and they are loved. This is tragic. Also, remember that when a runner dies of a heart attack in a marathon, there are always people who make comments about how unhealthy it is to run 26.2 miles. God be with these people and their families.

I just saw a CBS clip that was done with the owner of this makeshift submarine. Yowsa.
It was operated with a video game joystick. The video equipment was stuff bought at Best Buy. It's bathroom was a hospital pee bottle.
So sad that people put their lives in jeopardy for no reason. Seriously.
Yeah, I saw that, it was bare bones in that compartment. They apparent had spare joysticks, but if something else failed, didn't look like they could go into a control room to try to fix things. If something electrical went out (or that monitor failed), they might have been left with no control at all, including maybe oxygen delivery/regulation, and might have just been sitting in the dark.
