This is partly false. The category itself doesn't affect him but the prize money paid to nonbinary runners could be added to the amount paid to top runners in male and female categories or it could be paid to top runners over 40 YOA or clydesdale/athena type categories.
Totally. Add prize money on top of the existing prize money. But I'm not just gonna sit here & think that adding prize money for non-binary runners has to affect open prize money. Did this race cut open prize money to put up the non-binary prize money? If they did, I would not be quick to accept that as the reasoning. A lot of races can do a lot more for sub elite runners. There's no reason to get angry at the trans community when wanting to see more races invest in the runners up front. So many big races are cutting prize purses. That has nothing to do with the trans community, is way more common, yet we don't get thread after thread calling that out.
I am the third place runner who was cheated out of third place, $1000 USD in prize money, and a 2:18 result (5 min pb). I was misdirected by race staff with less than 30 seconds of running left and it cost me 17 mins in my official result. So far, I have been in correspondence with race organizers to reach some sort of resolution.
I am a top local runner in NYC and it’s beyond frustrating that biological men much slower than me have made 10’s of the thousands this past year despite running times that are nowhere near as competitive as the men’s. Something needs to be done about this because I personally already know of people abusing the system and claiming to be non-binary when they really aren’t for a quick paycheck.
I value my manhood and integrity over money but many others don’t. These “woke” race organizers need to wake up and realize how ridiculous this is.
I've had conversations about concerns with this in a liberal city, and almost everyone hand waves it away as very unlikely to happen. I believe personally most that identify their gender as non-binary are being honest, that said, there is no way to verify this information, and I am not sure what would be ethically sound to verify.
Maybe you can list yourself as non-binary for results purposes, but for rewards and podium, you must declare a biological gender. Technically there is intersex too, I am not sure how we should account for that either.

Yes to this but incentives will flip people. So will the current NYC rent market lol
How many people made fake bibs just to get into the Boston Marathon and then stole a medal at the end? If people are going to be dishonest just to get a simple finisher medal that they can show off at the office, I think they will certainly lie to make a $5,000 paycheck. I'm 50 years old and could easily have taken the ly lie to make a $5,000 paycheck. I'm 50 years old and could have cruised a 3:25 without much effort and taken home $2,500 for second overall and $500 for first Master. I would rather take home $3,000 than another Boston finisher medal.
Is there anything wrong with identifying as non-binary just for a few days?
I mean, I currently identify as male, and have for 20+ years, but if I’m just feeling kind of adventurous around the time of the next NYRR event who knows…

This is a valid approach that some races have actually taken, and seems to be a fair middle ground most people can agree on. You can register as whatever gender category you want, but must also enter a sex to be used for award purposes. There can be some reasonable limitations on this e.g. transgender women entering the female category must have undergone hormone therapy for some amount of time and transgender men entering the female category must not be on testosterone treatment.
In retrospect, ever listing results as "men" and "women" was a mistake. The entire reason for creating a protected category was because of physical differences of the different sexes, so they always should have been called "male" and "female". If we could retrofit that phrasing now, I think it would help the conversation.
The intersex situation remains difficult, and I won't pretend to have the answer there, but might require something like testosterone level limits.
I agree with mocazilla above, 100%. One of the biggest sticking points in this whole sports/gender controversy is the fact that there is (unnecessary) men's category. Why not just an open female (sex, not gender) categories? That's it. All 58 genders are welcome in either category, but if you are biological female, you go in female category.

So a guy who ran 2:24 wins $250 and a guy who runs 2:29 gets $5,000 as he calls himself nonbinary. And another guy wins $2,500? And $1,750 for a 1:40 plus half? What a joke
