Sha’Carri Richardson is a BETTER Sprinter than Katelyn Tuohy is a Distance Runner

unfortunately there is almost nothing to say about Mu because she never races, and doesn't really give any updates via any form of media

Now watching Tuohy about 3-4 months now. As much as I want to get excited about Mu, her career is not as exciting to follow compared to Tuohy's.

Has Sha'Carrie, stupid mid name punctuation and all, won anything of substance? The first time I even heard of her was the Olympic trials and that was stripped.

To compare the two is ridiculous. Based on personality we know the answer but to say a sprinter is a better athlete than a distance runner is absurd. Full stop!

This isn’t a crazy take, one can win the trials in the 100m, an event most people try in their youth so more talent goes through it. Katelyn is still a young elite Distance runner who’s been breaking records for years. Maybe in a few years it’ll be different. Doesn’t mean you have to like Richardson more cuz she’d have a higher world ranking.

I loved it after that race when ScR was being interviewed and talking crap and SAFP & Sherika walked into the view of the camera with SAFP photobombing the interview.

Tuohy will never beat Mu in the 800 but her range, nonetheless, is 800-10K. We don’t have a recent 800 time but she should be able to do a 2:02 or 2:03, optimistically. We also don’t have a 10K race result, but we have everything in between, from 1500 to 5000. She’s not only competitive within the NCAA within those distances, but she can demolish her competition. Only at the pro level can she not be certain of a victory, though we have recent evidence of her competitiveness at this elite level. There’s no way of knowing, since distance runners peak in their mid-20’s but there’s no reason to believe that she’s peaked at this point at age 20. Therefore, there’s no way to be sure that she can continue to Olympic medal levels, yet there’s a fair chance, with the right coaching and the right program. We also know that she cross-trains quite a bit so becoming a competitive triathlete is a good possibility. In my book, and this might be only my opinion, competitive triathletes, like pentathlon athletes are superior athletes to pure sprinters. As if the comparison makes any sense…

^ I’ve read through this thread. It’s totally ridiculous that some clowns here believe she has no future as a pro when she is already ahead of where some pros were when they were her age. That’s just hate talking.

To the point of being a triathlete, that isn’t a given. Many successful distance runners do not make good cyclists. Cycling is a whole different ball of wax that requires a much higher wattage output than distance running does to compete at the highest levels. I’m not implying that it’s easier to make it to the highest levels in cycling. It’s just different. Most top cyclists could never make it to the top level of running.

Tuohy, however, has very strong quads and hamstrings. Top cyclists need that. I would bet that she would be very good on the bike. Swimming is probably the wild card. I’m a decent runner, a much much better cyclist, and a lousy swimmer. I’m a strong swimmer in that I can swim long distances but I just can’t do it very fast. Not many can do all 3 disciplines well.

Good post! I do all three (bike, swim, run) but not competitively. I believe that I read that Tuohy cross-trains in the pool and cycles regularly. I’ve also noticed her well developed quads and hamstrings so I can see that route developing, if she chooses. I agree that at her stage of development we don’t know if she can reach top elite levels although she has the discipline and requisite desire. She has the humility required to know how much work is still ahead so I’m cautiously optimistic. The talent is evident every time she gets on the track. Her biomechanics are without peer. I was trained in a similar style by Olympic medal winners, so I’ve noticed her gait. It’s exciting to track her progress.

Unlikely but if Sha’Carri retired today she will have had a better athletics career than Tuohy can likely hope for. This is the part that rankles the Tuohy worshippers.

I believe Sha’Carri is the 7th fastest ever woman at 100m. For Tuohy to be the 7th fastest ever at 5000m she would have to run like 14:15. Tuohy will never run that fast. Tuohy has never broken 15. She is almost 21 and been training a long time. Can Tuohy break 15? She probably could do it now in the right race but not by much. She will never get to Sha’Carri’s level. This is OK. She seems like a great person and competitor.

Odis, you really seem to be bothered by the whole situation and comparing these two. You’ve spent the better part of the last few days focused on all of this. I hope that it is bringing joy to your life.

Depending on what metric you’re using, Tuohy has already surpassed ScR. And while it may be true that her 100 time places her in the top 10 all-time, what has she done lately? It all sort of reminds me of Glory Days by Bruce Springsteen. In 10 years will you be on here again comparing ScR to whomever is the best collegiate runner at that time?

Also, you’re comparing apples and oranges. Differences in time, and what might place someone in the top 10 or 20 on an all-time list, is measured in seconds for one discipline and hundredths of seconds for another.

Lastly, do you honestly think that Tuohy even cares about any of this? You obviously do and if it brings you pleasure, have at it.

It brings me little pleasure to have to educate folks like you about this. Your litany of excuses brings me a little pleasure as I wonder why you care so much about trying to deny the obvious. Sha’Carri is superior and it is not even debatable.

This is a ridiculous post and there is no merit in how you’re measuring athletic accomplishments. I suspect you know this and you’re just looking to get in a p** contest that is a lose-lose for all arguments. KT ranks top five in several distances. 5K will be determined this spring, but I suspect also show similar. She’s currently still in college and she ranks #1 in the NCAA in 1500, mile, 3K and 5K. Till she turns pro there’s no point in ranking her agains the Kenyans/Ethiopians or Ugandans.
