Yep. They had a last minute injury. If Chapman ran it would have been much closer. Still, while an ACC DMR title would have been nice, that is realistically as far as NCst could go this season. Tuohy is not going to run the DMR at nationals. Bottom line is they qualified for nationals and if they are lucky maybe they can AA.
they would have won the dmr if chmiel ran the 1200m leg 💀💀 instead they let her run the 5k .. whom sydney seymour could have won for them too
It was not the 1200 that ruined the race, it was the 400, Chapman did not run so Lewis was a last minute replacement and was dead last and lost 8 seconds over the top teams. Had Chapman run, the race would have been closer.
im saying how they could have still won the dmr if henes asked chmiel to run 1200m knowing damn well they will take a bigger gap in the 400m without their usual 400m runner, chmiel can run faster 1200m leg than shaw, her kick improved, evident from her XC finish last year
Thanks for showing the race FastTuohy and semihaze!
NOTE: Did anyone else notice how impressive it was that Markezich getting passed by Tuohy did NOT give up and instead surged at the right point when she sensed Tuohy was gassed and passed her? I know Markezich’s time still wasn’t fantastic, but she DID show some tenacity and good closing speed. She could have easily have just shut down. I imagine that meant a lot to her to have “beaten” Tuohy.

If Katelyn had Markezich's teammates and Markezich had Katelyn's teammates then Katelyn would have lapped her. Not even kidding, Tuohy absolutely could.
Much easier to save something when you are the one inheriting the huge lead and had the luxury of running much slower. I guess I am not seeing the tactics or tenacity in simply not giving up a nearly 10 second lead in a 1600m race. But still, good job holding onto second place.
Tuohy is running more consistent than pros except Monson. 4.24 4.24 4.23 on any kind of track, banked or flat. Nothing affects her consistency, its crazy.
She knew she couldn't get 1st. She finished the highest possible. Appreciate that for what it is. Tuohy ran great but no surprise whatsoever. It wasn't even a pb and she had a running start.
Chmiel was already set for the 5000m. Would not have made sense to have her in the dmr.
It might have given Tuohy and team a fighting chance for the win. There might have been some uncertainty about Seymour pulling out the 5,000 and that is what Henes values the most, based on her past. In retrospect Chmiel could have likely done a 3:21 1200, giving a solid team around the iffy 400 sub. The DMR just wasn’t meant to be, yet we got to see a very heroic ‘Prefontaine-like’ gutsy performance from Tuohy.
I also believe that Tuohy is maybe 12 months away from pulling out a 4:20 and giving her a shot at a 3:59, putting her in the position of a top US 1500 performer internationally, though perhaps, still short of overtaking the Afrikans in that specialty. Her sweet spot may still be the 3K, where she has a way to go to get to a 8:20 world-class performance level. Meanwhile, she can still focus at going sub 15:00 for 5K this year. She may get to a Monson level only after turning pro, IMO.

I'm not sure how much faster than 3:24 Chmiel could do. Duke ran a huge faster time for them. With Chapmand Henes must have thought it was NC St and ND - and the 3 seconds on the 400 they lost would have beaten ND. But Duke ran really great. BTW ND DMR also has noone qualified for day 1 events so their DMR (like Duke) can be fresh for Nationals. WA has 2 on the DMR in top 16 of mile and 1 in top 16 of 800. neither of themilers are in top 29 of 3000. Gregory of AR is not qualified in 3000 but is in mile. Do they all sacrifice their event for the DMR?
Henes is going for team points and she did that well by having both Chmiel and Seymour in the 5k. Chmiel likely helped Seymour to finish as high as she did.
NC state would have gotten silver in the DMR and maybe even won it if Chapman had not gotten injured and ran the 400 instead.
All this talk that Chmiel should not have run the 5k doesn't make sense when looking at the points.
