What happened to 4:02 marathon post? I think it was a hoax that was exposed from this thread. I think this thread may be a hoax as well but with nothing to do during the 89 hours of the freezing ice in D/FW it's been entertaining.
I see those A$$holes ever race standing in the A group behind the elites .Easy to spot the 4 hour plus people standing there with their cellphones in hand taking selfies and wearing hydration packs .
When someone says they finished A Marathon, I can usually look at them and have a General Idea of their time, But to be nice I say what was your time? If they say 6 Hours, I act like I am Impressed and say WOW, that is a Lot of hours to be Running, It is a Little phony on my part, but they are happy with my response and I did not create bad vibes with that person, If I had answered well The Men's World Record is 2:01.09 And The Women's Record is 2:14.08 To Me, I would be acting like a Jerk, and that Person will feel I put them down,, Sometimes it is better to be phony, so you do not make a person feel bad, I did not lie to them 6 Hours is a Long time to be running/working out etc

I was at my High School reunion one year. This girl I know who just got married was running around telling everyone that he is a marathon runner. I told her that him and I should get together now and then for a run. Now almost everyone in my High School class still remembers me. Well, HR finally allowed my coworker to return to work after being forced to work from home for the past couple of months. But unfortunately, I fear she has NOT learned her lesson.
Things had been going smoothly for the past couple weeks with her back in the office, but then this morning someone happened to bring up the Boston marathon and I chimed in that "you actually need to run a certain time to qualify for THAT race" and did this kind of running-in-place dance while I said it.
My coworker turned beet red, screamed something intelligible, and in a frenzy, she bent down to take off one of her high-heeled shoes (presumably to attack me with) but slipped and fell and pulled her left hammy. It was quite the scene, her rolling around on the floor, grabbing her hammy, and making all sorts of outrageous and depraved threats against my wellbeing.
Some people just need to learn how to interact with others. Oh well, it's HR's problem to deal with.

A co-worker says they ran a marathon, and are pretty excited about it. As a runner, you probably would have already known if this person was a serious runner. It seems pretty clear that OP knew she wasn't, which means that simply running and finishing the marathon was likely to be a big deal (aka, a win) for her. Shifting the conversation abruptly from finishing to "how fast" implicitly diminishes her accomplishment of finishing.
An alternative response could have conveyed interest and enthusiasm while still getting the information you wanted: "Congratulations, that's really cool! Was it your first? Did you like the course? How was the weather? What was your time?"
