foam rolling, stretching, strengthening making me MORE injured?

also i want to switch up my shoes. i went to the running store and i didn’t really like the saucony rides. i like brooks hyperion tempo and saucony endorphin for faster stuff. i need to find an easy run shoe, would hoka clifton, rincons, or machs be good? or something else?

i’ve been running in the hyperion tempo the past few days and my shin has actually been feeling so much better. it’s way lighter, has an 8mm drop (compared to 12 of my ghosts) and i don’t sound like an elephant running. i’ve found that i can run how i want to and it just feels so much more natural and smooth. the thing is though they’re kind of narrow and are crushing my toes, and i want to get more pairs in my rotation.

i don’t know how much you guys care but i figured i’d do an update, and thanks again for all your responses!

1. i already said this but the brooks hyperion tempos magically made my bad shin pain disappear. i feel much better and smoother with natural form running in them. however, they are too narrow (or small?) and i came home today after the third day running in them with my right foot’s toes in pain and bleeding (weirdly only my right foot though).

2. so do you guys think would sizing up in the hyperion tempos be better? or are they just naturally narrow in the toe box?

3. i need an easy day shoe, something really light and with a drop less than 8mm. someone said saucony rides, which i went to go try on, but they just werent for me (felt kind of heavy and weirdly overly stable). thank you anyway for the suggestion! so are new balances rebel v3s good? i’ve seen people use those! or saucony kinvaras, but someone said those might not be cushioned enough for easy days?

I run in the Rincons for easy runs and med-long runs. Really like them. They are very cushy, and have a low heel drop. Great for recovery and easy mileage. They are pretty much the opposite of what you have been running in so start slow in them if you get Hokas.

Those shoes sound way too small, there's no way they should be causing your foot to bleed! I'm glad the shin pain has gone though - that's a good sign. 12mm drop is way too much IMO. I wouldn't drop directly to 0mm whatever you did. You mentioned Hokas etc which are good shoes but you've been running in shoes with a massive heel drop and if you suddenly switch to 0mm you may run into problems.

i know, i wouldn’t switch that fast. the 8mm hyperion tempos feel good except for the size, and 12 to 8 isn’t a significant drop so it shouldn’t cause problems, correct? i might trying sizing up and seeing if it’s better.

has anyone tried the saucony freedom 5s? i’ve heard some people say they’re not good, but it’s what my running store in town has (obviously i could order some other type but i like to try on in store more). they have a 4mm drop which is a big difference, so i wouldn’t start in them right away, but are they good for easy runs/in general?

update: i have a sacral stress fracture now…can’t deal with this anymore

If it is a stress fracture then honestly take 6 weeks off from running and do swimming. It will let your muscles reset as well.

It sounds like you need strength exercises and possibly form correction.
