I'll bite on rojo's troll but just in reference to one falsehood he likes to trumpet: "Offering male, female and non-binary as categories of competition conflates sex (immutable and consisting of two, male and female) with gender identity (fluid and difficult to define)." Concerns about whether women are really women are not new and included both the first and second place finisher in the women's 100m dash in the 1936 Olympics. My question for Rojo is: are you sure that even your hero Paula Radcliffe is a woman? How do you know? After all her 2003 marathon world record was well under the 10% slower scienceish standard that you cite. Because rojo won't consider that Radcliffe was doping, would he at least agree that she was a genetic freak with blood tests far beyond a typical woman.

Races are based on sex not gender. These “non binary” men and women and gender ideology activists need to grow up and accept the fact and reality. You’re a male or a female and we have categories for that. You’re not special for putting a label on yourself.

If people can't compete in a given activity, they should either accept the truth that they simply aren't as good (and not expect to be rewarded for it), and they should endeavor to do something they are good at. It's that simple. A person who argues otherwise but claims to be for equality is a rank hypocrite. And, dumb besides.

The headline says all that needs to be said. There is no reason to engage with the activists in their nonsense. Men should never be allowed to compete against women.

Surprised no one has mention intersex athletes competing in the non-binary category. Might be clueless but wouldn’t they technically be non-binary?

They would be the closest thing to non binary. But the majority of intersex individuals could still be labeled as either male or female, depending on the biological issue they have.

You did pretty much what you said towards me. Lashing out because you’re immature. Incase you didn’t know, sex is female and male. Gender was made around sex hence why the common gender terms are made towards female and male. You guys published an inflammatory opinion piece without bothering to get prospective from NYRR, any non-binary runners, or even corporations that are backing the movement (see, e.g., Michelob ULTRA, among others).

Reading is hard for some. Female and male are sex, not gender. Good try though.

This is about prize money, not about the category existing. The original story and many of the posters seem to be saying that non-binary is a bad category that shouldn't exist.

When a person signs up for a race, they can check the box for male or female. If a person doesn't want to be labeled into those categories, there should be a "no classification" or "non-binary" category. They have a right to exist, a right to run a race, and a right to not be labeled into a category. Those are basic human rights.

But do they have a right to prize money? When women point out they should get equal pay for sports, the main arguments are that they are 50 percent of the population, do the same work, and are a clearly defined category. As the story points out, non-binary is not clearly defined and is a small percent of the population. So what reason is there for prize money? I say none, other than the race organizers want to promote that category.

Race forms don't have religion categories, but they do have age categories. We don't give prize money to age categories, although there is nothing wrong with doing that if the race organizers choose to.

So this is really about who we choose to recognize and celebrate in a race event. Organizers could include an Asian category, LGBTQ category or Baptist category if they think there is a reason for it. It is a sign of the times that they are choosing non-binary to celebrate, mostly because it is a real category that has not been recognized in the past. So yes, there is wokeness and virtue-signalling involved, but at least they are siding with freedom of expression. Many of the posters here are procrustean, on the side of forcing people into categories.
