It’s clearly evident that Cheatpinski was a drug cheat. How can it be possible that he is allowed to keep your Gold Medal? Why is he not being stripped of the Gold Medal- which clearly belongs to you! Who’s protecting that drug cheat?
And yet Cierpinski was the only distance runner from the DDR to do anything in '76. Where were the East Germans in the 5 and 10 thousand? There is much more to Cierpinski's success than doping.
It was odd that the GDR did not have any entries in the 5000m or 10000m. This would have been Manfred Kuschmann as a likely entry and finalist. It was before Kunze and Schildauer. Maybe Kuschmann was injured in '76. He was world ranked in the surrounding years.
Yes. I am early in the interview though and I know it is difficult to be interviewed and Frank is not young anymore but when he is discussing Dave Wottle’s splits he says 25.9, 25.9, 25.9 and 25.9 and I am thinking that would be about 1:43.6 and Dave ran 1:45.86. OK no big deal and then immediately Frank says that people usually run negative splits in the 800m and I see Jonathan gets a certain look on his face because he knows Frank must mean positive splits but he doesn’t want to say anything to embarrass Frank. Anyway I am picking nits but the nits are there.
My take on the Shorter interview--YAWN . Mr. Shorter should stop taking himself so seriously. When asked hypotheticals about how Pre would have done in 76 or how he would have done in today's environment of fast courses, carbon shoes, and pacers he took a pass.
It has more and more of that SoCal "what have you done for me lately?" I wonder if more than a handful can recognize Benji Durden out on his midday runs anymore. If not for the Bosleys and a handful of other survivors, Shorter would be more or less forgotten in the public eye. No one could blame him if he simply tired of it all and wanted to trade it in for something more form-fitting and homey, where his accomplishment and status would be shown broad appreciation.
That would suck if he moved because he felt like people weren’t kissing his ring enough during his wonderland lake shuffles. I mean I love seeing him at bolder Boulder personally, but no one is owed fame. I doubt that’d be a dealbreaker for the guy anyway, or at least I hope
You snipped out and overlooked the main point: the nature of his neighbors has shifted over the years. His demographic has (wisely) been cashing-out equity from Boulder neighborhoods to be replaced by Mountain View transplant types. Being forgotten is part and parcel of that. There's far less aging-in-place relative to Falmouth.
From that article it looks like he moved to Falmouth because his wife wanted to. Don't know if the other stuff factored in or not. Plenty of his demographic are staying but who knows.

Typical shorter---calculating and guarded.
All of what you say may be true but people don’t typically change much as they get older. Their character and personalities are what they are. I still enjoyed the interview because no matter what you think of Frank Shorter, on that day 50 years ago the dude was a boss, he was an American boss, and hearing him bloviate as a senior citizen is a treasure for some of us because he ain’t going to be around for ever and even if he is his bloviating will become more annoying so it was a good time to hear him.

Never appeared to be a warm person. Great runner, for what it is worth.
Boulder started not being Boulder in the early-80s, and when The Blue Note closed it was all over. Boulder, and much of the Front Range have been California Lite going on 35 years now.

I remember people talking about that even when I was there in the 70s. I have a friend who lived there for a long time who told me it was all over when the Bustop closed.

Which was just four years ago. Soon after Shorter married his current wife. Coincidence?

You'd have raced against him, right, the 72 Trials at least? Did you ever talk with him?

1972 and 1976 Trials. I was in the same race. Pre would always talk to people. Shorter was more business like. Look thru you. My impression, that is all. To be that good you probably need that single purpose. I have never had that level of commitment to anything other than other family.
