"Yeah so lots of people were saying a student at BYU was screaming racist BS at a sporting event, but we actually investigated and our conclusion is: 'prove it'"

-BYU conservatives
WOW earthshattering
You’re wrong. One person heard it, the hoax was prearranged by her godmother. That’s according to Jason Whitlock.
I'm thinking the byu crowd was being loud and taunting the duke team (thats pretty normal in college sports). players were getting frustrated/rattled.
she felt threatened/out of her safe space and "heard" a racial word. from then on all taunting (go home! you suck!) etc was RACIST TAUNTING when is reality it was a super loud aggressive crowd that this duke team couldn't take.y
Go sit at a yankees game in the bleachers. same thing.
Or go to Cameron Indoor Stadium where Duke fans take particular delight in heckling players from opposing teams.
I just want to summarize the LRC investigation so far:
- We have assumed the duke player heard something that wasn't actually said (just our gut)
- Many sports fans heckle opponents without saying racist things
- Duke fans heckle opponents without saying racist things
That's not the topic of debate. You guys are just like "don't believe her, let's talk about why that is"

You missed the part where some LetsRunners believe the Duke player regardless of the lack of any corroborating evidence and also accuse BYU, the investigating police, the local press and pretty much the entire LDS church of being lying racists. I guess it's OK to smear a religion though, right? Oh, and you took my post out of context...not surprisingly.
Does anyone honestly believe that BYU students or Provo locals wouldn't use the n word to taunt someone? It is deeply ingrained.
I am not a Mormon, but I have been to a few byu basketball games. I could be wrong, wasn't there, but I would surprised if this happened. The average byu crowd is pretty tame. Now a basketball game in eastern Europe, completely different
Duke volleyball player Rachel Richardson told ESPN's Holly Rowe how a series of racial slurs during a match last week at BYU have changed her life and praised Cougars athletic director Tom Holmoe for his efforts.
Mods, can we please get a moratorium on any BYU thread that is not running related and some intense monitoring of any BYU-running thread? I have been visiting this site for just shy of 20 years and I have never seen a thread about BYU that was not full of bigotry against Mormons and their religion. There is even a poster here with the screenname "27 wives" - are you kidding me? And this guy is talking about racism/bigotry? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. The anti-Mormon bigotry has gotten completely out of control. There are posters on this site who are Mormon and I'm sure some of the BYU team reads this message board. Please have a little empathy and delete the bigoted posts.

Funny that this is your takeaway on a thread that is essentially calling the Duke volleyball player a liar.
Were there off duty, non-church sanctioned, public agency police and/or lawyers and/or citizens with/without legal immigration papers who were present and who witnessed firsthand and/or recorded the alleged activity? Links?
Sounds like maybe they got the wrong guy but there’s no sign this is a hoax.
Provo is a sh*thole

they went through hours of video and couldnt find a single istance where a racial slur was said. no fan is able to confirm it. only one duke player.
weird.
Maybe no Duke player heard it either? It seems like her own teammates would have raised hell on the spot if it was happening. People would stand up for her in that situation.
Any time there is a hearsay story it's going to have doubts but I believe Rachel.
Rachel, AND her teammates, heard the slurs, and BYU acknowledged they banned the person in question. It's convenient for "anonymous" people to come out and say it didn't happen after the fact. Just because the videos didn't pick up on it, doesn't mean it didn't happen. You have to actually yell REALLY LOUDLY for a video to pick up on anything. If video picked up on every horrible thing said by fans, Yankees games would have to be played on mute.
I want to talk about BYU for a second.
I love coach Taylor. The women and men there have built something special. The first out LGBT BYU athlete was an XC runner. That's a cool claim to have for our sport.
But BYU has policies (mainly in their honor code) that I believe violate constitutional rights of their students. I am surprised they haven't been slapped with a million lawsuits. I'm surprised the NCAA hasn't thrown the book at them, and frankly--kicked them out.
Now some schools have strict policies. Some of them have girls dorms and boys dorms and don't allow the opposite sex into the dorms. I say that's totally fine, their property their rules. I believe rules like these fall into the "you chose to go there, you adhere to the rules" finger wag.
BYU's honor code stretches far beyond that reach. It goes into private lives of students and follows them everywhere on campus. They control what students wear and how they behave at all times. No "profane and vulgar" language is actually a violation of first amendment rights. Maybe not in the classroom but always. If you cuss in your dorm room or cuss in your home while you have other students over, you could be turned into the honor code office. Don't get me started on LGBT issues at BYU. Don't get me started on how two people of the same sex holding hands can put you at risk for expulsion there.
Students who don't turn their classmates into the HCO when they see a violation are also at risk, so it just promotes a terrible tattle culture.
Finally, strange that the only University I am aware of that has a literal rule of "no profane and vulgar language" is the school that let someone scream racist slurs the entire game and no one did anything about it, and everyone believed that story. Says a lot about how the rules are going. Maybe it's better to have actual values than silly rules. Just a thought.
