?????? You realize the Sahlmans were PRing well into the postseason, right? Colin from 3:58i to 3:56 in trash conditions, and 1:50i to 1:48.07. Aaron did even better from a 4:03 1600 to a 4:01 mile, and going from 1:53i to 1:48. Lex improved too, from 4:08.9 to 4:01, and ran 13:43 in May. Leo ran 4:00 at the end of may then shut it down due to sickness.
Maybe you were referring to when they did poorly at Arcadia because they ran 8:34/8:35/8:48/8:52/9:02, and neglected to look at any races after that, because I have no clue how you would think they fizzled after Febuary.
I think he's referring to the rest of the team that struggled after. As everyone points out, the Youngs and Sahlmans are outliers.
Appleford ran his 3200m PB (8:52) at Arcadia. He finished his season at end of Anya with a 2nd at State
Doshi ran his 3200m PB (9:02) at Arcadia
Blunt ran his mile Pb (4:19) at Arcadia
Windham ran his 1600m PB (4:26) in his last race of his HS career on May 7
Porter ran his 1600m Pb (4:26) in his last race of the year on Apr 28..,
…so no the other guys were doing fine to the end of the season.
- Keys are - I’m meticulous in tapering, keep the process going and believe, they will do whatever I say, do what they are told. - How to keep things going forward, I change things a lot and my talks are motivating - They do in practice whatever I ask them to do - Trust the peaking and they do - I’m fortunate that my background is pro running and have big time coaches as friends - Told them to trust me
Not a single mention of anyone being talented. How do you listen to that interview and not think this guy is a narcissist? Every single question was brought back to himself.
Bro the question was literally "What's it gonna take to keep things going for the next 2 weeks (until NXN)". How does saying "my kids are talented" answer that question at all?? Not to mention, this was in 2019 after winning division champs, so it's not like he had the greatest team of all time at this point.
He said "They're already believers, I couldn't ask for anything more. If I tell them to stand on their head, they'd stand on their head... they do what they're told from a coaching standpoint and it's pretty amazing". I feel like saying "they do in practice whatever I ask them to do" is literally the worst possible interpretation you could make from that statement. It sounds to me like he's grateful for them, not that he's making it about himself.
I'm gonna be honest, I don't know if there are any interviews out there where he doesn't talk about his coaching. I don't think it's because Brosnan is full of himself, I think it's because every interviewer asks Sean what he does/what his role is in making such a good team
Plus, I notice you weren't able to link an interview where Brosnan sounds like he's saying NP's success is about him instead of the brothers, as opposed to him and the brothers. I'm pretty sure that's because you can't actually back up your opinion, but don't worry, because I can back up mine:
After being asked about his reaction to Colin breaking 4, he said he thought Colin could do it, then said "He played it out like a pro. He waited, was patient, and I knew he could close in a 56 if he had to, it was awesome". Then, unprompted, mentions how well Lex and Aaron did in the 3k, and says "I'm proud of these guys, they sacrifice a lot, they listen to me and my crazy antics, but I'm so proud of them it's awesome." Maybe you see it differently, but in my mind, I see him praising Colin, then making sure the other 2 incredible performances by his athletes don't go unnoticed, praising them, and then making a little self deprecating joke. Maybe you could try to spin that as him always bringing it back to his coaching, but I think that completely misses the point/context of everything he was saying.
A minute later, after being asked about their potential, he says "You have to believe, you obviously have to have the right talent, the right coach, and I think you can do great things. Nico Young set the precedent for these guys and it's been awesome these last few years". Right there, he's acknowledging that he got good talent, and that he's the right coach for the job, before praising what Nico did a few years ago. Again, if saying "with the right talent and coaching, you can do great things" is enough to make you think he's always trying to make everything about him, I think you are trying way too hard to hate him.
In both of those interviews, you are interpreting his words instead of listening to the ACTUAL words. Especially in the first interview, it is crystal clear he is giving them credit for listening to him.
Even in the second interview, he gives them credit for sacrificing a lot and listening to him.
I think you are trying to hard to cover up his arrogance. It’s not hard at all to dislike someone as full of himself as this guy. Any time someone says they don’t like him, people like you deflect and say it’s jealousy. People don’t like arrogant wind bags and he is an arrogant wind bag.
How many Newbury Park runners have? Nico came within half a minute. All this talk about breaking records, and it's not just Brosnan's social media. Wejo or somebody wrote:
"...his runners rewrote the high school record books" right on the front page.
Yet, none of them seem to have a high school record. Nico got one, but nobody there now, graduated this year, or that participated in the unbelievable 'record breaking' year ('21-'22 school year) got one. Hardly 'rewriting' anything.
These guys get credit for doing a lot that they haven't done....just like Rupp, who could easily break the half and full ARs anytime he decides to. One of these days, he won't wear a watch, realize how close he is, and decide to slow down just to avoid breaking records. These guys have run 13:20 about as much as Rupp has run 2:05.

The coach defined 4:20 as "not fast," so these three are disappointments, maybe seeing it on a tshirt would've helped them, but tis too late for them now.

Not too late for Porter. He’s only gonna be a junior so he has 2 more years to get way under 4:20.
He’s also new to Newbury Park. He went to Westlake CA freshman year and his 1600 PR was 4:44 while there.
I also couldn’t find anything on him from before freshman year so he might be one of those kids who hasn’t started running until freshman year.

There is something you are not understanding here. Removing limits. That’s what Sean Brosnan does. He is a great motivator. When a respected coach tells his athlete he can run X time the athlete believes it’s possible. Shoot for the stars…
That “limits” stuff is nonsense. If the brothers ran somewhere else, their coach would tell them they could only run 4:05 and even though that would feel relatively easy, they wouldn’t dare run a second faster? I’m pretty sure my limits in HS distance running were not set by my coach.
Daniel Appleford is a great runner but at 1:57/4:11 he doesn’t match up to the brothers. Why didn’t Brosnan adjust his limits to 1:50/4:00?
You are not getting my point or can’t relate. ie. I had a Coach in high school that I had so much respect for and wanted to not let him down ever. He would set goals for me like good coaches do and it is so helpful when the coach believes in you. Much like what Brosnan was to the Newbury Park runners
All ran significantly faster early in the season than they finished.
As a whole, the team definitely struggled at the end relative to the early season.
The guys peaked at Arcadia or after.
Appleford, Doshi and Blunt peaked at Arcadia
Cantù’s SB was on Apr28
Olsen plays soccer
Brotherly love....It is not at all uncommon for some athletes to run their fastest or near it at Arcadia. If you've ever been to it you would understand why. About 55-60 degress, no wind, and an atmosphere to run fast. Hell you go there to run fast and it's set up to do so by Rich Gonzalez. Not many other states have invites like this one. Ever been to the CIF Southern Section circuit? Or the state meet? Not quite the same thing. I simply do not understand why this even keeps coming up, especially with the CA sunlight. If you do not get it...go to Arcadia and watch. Watching it on a LIVE STREAM is good, but it's not the same thing.
So in the last 3 years, even subtracting out Youngs/Sahlmans, their next fastest 4 guys have 3200 times that would be all time records for 80%+ of the High Schools in America
If Lex is in significantly better shape than he was when he ran 13:43, maybe he is close to 13:20s shape. Nico was in 13:20s shape his freshman year, and he stays in contact with Brosnan and his brothers, maybe they’re basing it off of what Nico was doing in that shape.
also, in the article linked earlier, it said NP was considering skipping Woodbridge and they were gearing for NXN. I thought they had committed to running lane, did the article just get it wrong? I hope they go to Woodbridge bc they could set a record that probably isn’t getting broken.
He wanted them to skip Woodbridge due to a course change. Its no longer at Silverlakes, so its gonna be a lot slower this year. Plus Newbury already has thr 5 fastest HS 3-miles anyway lmao
I dont think the plan was ever to do Runninglane, they just want the most competetive national meet. Plus NXN covers flight costs, etc.
Without Runninglane or Woodbridge and this being the Sahlman/Young's last year at NP I doubt those 3mile or 5k records are ever gonna go down, or at least by someone from NP.
I know he's probably still going to be in close contact with them anyway through his wife, text, meetings, etc but I do wonder how Sean's absence from the head coaching position will affect this year in regards to peaking/record chasing. I respect him for taking the job when the opportunity presented itself to him though. Very few coaches would have the balls to walk away from the senior years of possibly the greatest XC, 800, 3200, and 5k runners in US history to pursue the next step in his career.
He has been begging for a college job for years. This isn't courage. Courage would have been sticking it out one more year to help the kids break every national record and having the confidence that you will find a college job next year.

The fact that Brosnan is now gone may be a blessing in disguise for the Youngs.
Nico graduated during COVID so he could not chase records his senior year. It may have helped him to ease into College.
With Brosnan, maybe the Youngs would have gone on a HS record hunt this year. Now, there may be less pressure to do that. Who really cares about HS records? Of course, they are nice, but don’t really matter when you get to College (or after).
