A lot of people whining about Jakob being 19 in 2019, so was barega and he won a silver medal in the 5k. Anyone of the main contenders could win, so don't go handing gold medals around when the race hasn't been run yet. He got out kicked by jake wightman, so maybe lessen the expectations a lil bit
Here is an extract of comments against Jakob´s chances to win the 5000m:
SleaZy : Honestly cheptegei s kick is better than Jakob I don’t see Jakob winning in a slow race and it going to be 90+ degrees so it cant be too fast
Prorunner 123 : Jacob is not in a sub 13 shape, there is almost no chance of him winning + These people don't follow 5k races, they just vote Jacob cause he is famous now. Do they realize that Cheptegei is a modern day Bekele and is unbeatable if he gives it all in a race + This race will be 5k and he have Cheptegei in his natural habitat vs Jacob in his kinda natural habitat since he is famous for his high weekly mileage, but is it enough against a 5k and a 10k WR holder? I am pretty certain that it isn't but we shall see.
DC doctor : The heat will make it easier to break the race apart with 1600 to go and Chep will win again. Even if the race ends up an 800 sprint, I don’t think Jakob wins this. + if Jakob is leading with 400 to go, I say he loses, but I think Chep and Barega and hopefully Fisher will be there fighting for that spot. If Jakob had to go wide, no way he wins.
High hopes : Cheptegei may not have beaten Josh Thompson in the 1500, certainly wouldn't trouble the top 5. But he's still likely to win the 5000
Are you kidding?: I've never seen anyone as overhyped as Jakob on this forum. dude has never won a single medal in the 5000m, but you would think he was an all-time great in that discipline by the way this place talks about him. Guys are saying he's the favorite over Cheptegei???? The reigning gold medalist and record holder in the 5000m. pure delusion.
My two pennies :
Chep has many chances to get his double, including tomorrow. He has the world records, he’s proven he can kick with the best of them at any pace, standing clear of the field in that tactical 10k here as well as the fast 5k in Tokyo. This is his race to lose, no matter how angry Jakob gets.
Mbaihaulles :
An observation that I've also observed. He's overhyped for nothing. Let's see if this over hyping will translate to a podium finish in the 5000M Athletican :
1 This! End of discussion! And top 3 men’s 5k will be: 1. Cheptegei 2.Jakob 3. Fisher you
Blugh : You are underestimating Edris and Barega though I agree Chep is the favorite.
SDSU Aztec :
I don’t think either of those things. I’ll be very impressed if Jakob wins a Silver and I would expect him to pull off the double next time.
Jakob is going to put himself into position to get a medal or win in nearly every major race he enters. He's obviously driven as hell and ultra competitive. Of course he was going to have a chance in this 5000 lol. I feel like half the people on this message board dont even watch the races.
