Maybe 4:20 isn't fast after all. You have to give Sean Brosnan credit for upping the bar in HS distance.

Looking back to XC Davis put their #1 right ahead of NPHS' #5. NPHS' 5, 6 & 7 were ahead of Davis' #2. NPHS' 8 and 9 (Cantu and Blunt) likely would have been competitive with Davis' 2.

If you want to be "fair", since we are removing Newbury's 1-4 because they are too talented, let's remove Ayers from Davis since he's quite talented as well. In this scenario NPHS scores as low as 15 head to head (realistically slightly higher, but not competitive), without 1-4.

No knock on Davis, they have an exceptional program and great runners.

As for NPHS' school size, it's in the 2000s which is fairly average for a California public high school.

I've been critical of Shawn because I think that he's self centered. The vast majority of high school coaches do so in the interest of the kids, and only the kids. I think Shawn cares about the kids, but also very much displays self interest. It doesn't have to be one or the other. Both can be true.

He's very much upped the game in high school running. I think Newbury Park has shown what high schoolers are capable of. These kids are insane. Their 4th best runner ran 1:48.9 and got 7th at pseudo nationals? I mean damn, they're rewriting the history books.

What I would love to see from Shawn, tho, is commitment. He's either going to go pro soon, or stay high school forever. Shawn, please listen. You've done enough. You've proven yourself. You've proven your point. I just hope that you stick by the kids. You'll do much more for them than you'll ever do for yourself, if that makes sense.

There's a famous coach who conquered D3 (sort of equiv to HS eh?). He destroyed the competition year after year, and even in down years there was promise. This coach received many offers to coach D1. Many, many offers, or so I've heard. But he stuck with D3. If you get the chance to ask him about it, I would.

I've been a running fan since about 2010 (I was 15). This is unreal to me. Chris Derrick ran 13:55 as a senior. Galen ran 13:37 at 18 and two months. Lex was 17 and three months. I know Nike has some pretty smart engineers but spikes can't account for all of this.
